The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees called for a Tax Ratification Election (TRE) at their board meeting last Thursday. The August 30 election will ask voters to approve keeping the district's total tax rate the same while allowing the district to access more than $5.5 million in state and local funds by shifting two cents of the tax rate from debt service to maintenance and operations. Lala Chavez is the newest member of the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees after being sworn in by the Honorable Jorge Hernandez at last week's board meeting. Chavez replaces former trustee Mario Ybarra after winning the July 7 special election. |
New principals named at three LISD campuses

The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees approved new principals at three LISD campuses last week. Philip Riewe heads to Irons Middle School after a long tenure at Coronado High School. Damon McCall will lead O.L. Slaton Middle School and is coming from Roosevelt ISD. Christy Gillespie moves up to principal at Wolffarth Elementary School after serving as an assistant principal since 2012.

Summer meal program runs until August 4
The Lubbock ISD Summer Feeding Program is open to anyone 18 years of age and younger. There are 26 campuses participating in the program, some with varied times and dates. The full schedule can be viewed here.

It's not too late to register for pre-k!
Registration is open throughout the summer for Lubbock ISD's 2016-2017 prekindergarten program at 31 elementary school campuses. Lubbock ISD provides prekindergarten for eligible children who are four years old on or before September 1 of the current school year. A discount is available for full-time LISD employees.
The application process can be completed at any elementary school campus. For more information, visit the Lubbock ISD website.

Students learn about electricity at STEAM Camp

Students at Mackenzie Middle School spent last week learning about electricity at the second annual STEAM Camp. Art teachers Loren Wilferth and Tabitha Hernandez led the students through activities covering science, technology, engineering, art and math, culminating the experience with an Electric Art Show last Thursday night. |
O.L. Slaton team wins Texas Tech/LISD Middle School STEM Challenge

Students representing each Lubbock ISD middle school campus competed in the third annual Texas Tech Univeristy/LISD Middle School STEM Challenge. This year, the students competed in hovercraft construction. The winning team from O.L. Slaton Middle School claimed the Dwyer Cup for the 2016-2017 academic year. The cup is named for former TTU STEM Center for Outreach, Research and Education Director and Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Jerry Dwyer, in recognition of his efforts and dedication in improving STEM education for Lubbock students.

AMBUCS of Lubbock presented an Amtryke to Bobby Monk, teacher at Alderson Elementary School, during their monthly luncheon last week. AMBUCS provides the hand-powered bicycles as part of their mission to create mobility and independence for people with disabilities. |
