Lt. Walters inducted in to Texas Police Hall of Fame
Lubbock ISD Police Lieutenant Darren Walters will be inducted into the Texas Police Athletic Association's Hall of Fame next month at the Texas Police Games in Houston. Walters was notified of his induction last Friday, May 1st. He was nominated for the honor by retired Lubbock Police Department Sergeant Ronnie Sowell for his continued success at the Texas Police Games in the open Karate competition over the last 18 years. Walters has won the open Karate heavy-weight division 17 times. Because the competition is based on an Olympic, point-style format, Walters describes it as, "so much fun...it's like a game of chess."
Lt. Walters who serves as the LISD Police Department's firearms and defensive tactics instructor has studied martial arts since 1973. He enjoyed a professional career as a martial arts fighter from 1985 until 2009 and holds four world titles in open Karate. He has been in law enforcement since 1991 and with Lubbock ISD since 1996.
LISD Chief of Police Jody Scifres said, "It is a great honor to have Darren inducted into the Texas Police Olympics Hall of Fame. I am very proud of Darren and his accomplishments in Karate. He represents the district very well. "

That's three more students than appeared on last year's All-State Academic list. Co-Director of Aquatics and Head Diving Coach Penny Dipomazio said, "The athletes and coaches in our program emphasize excellence in the classroom as well as in the pool. The number of athletes selected this year goes to show their dedication." Class of 2014 demographics herald changes
When the Class of 2014 graduates in late May and early June, it will mark the end of an era for public education in Texas. The Class of 2014 is projected to be the last class in which Hispanic students will not comprise the majority of the graduates, statewide.
This year's graduating class will also be the last in which a majority of the students do not come from economically disadvantaged family backgrounds.
Hispanics students became the majority of total public school enrollment in Texas for the first time in the 2010-11 school year.
As the Texas Education Agency recently reported, enrollment in Texas public schools has now surpassed five million students. Since the 2010-2011 school year, Hispanic enrollment has comprised the majority of Texas students. To read more, click here.

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month
Speech, language, and hearing disorders are among the most common disabilities in the United States. However, unlike many other disabilities, these disorders often are reversible and even preventable with early intervention. In young children, early treatment can help prevent them from falling behind academically, socially, and in other key areas at a critical time in their development.
Lubbock ISD is grateful to the 30 speech language pathologists in our district who provide support to students, teachers and parents to improve communication skills. Employees are encouraged to express appreciation to their campus speech language pathologist for the services they provide to students.

Advisory board members help repair CNC gear
Pictured above (L to R) are J&B Industrial Services Project Manager Craig Boling, Maintenance Supervisor Cody Boling and Manufacturing Supervisor Shawn Shepherd. The Bolings and Shepherd are trouble shooting maintenance issues with the computer numerical control (CNC) machine in the manufacturing/welding lab inside the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC). They are also members of the ATC's Manufacturing Advisory Committee.
Lubbock ISD's CTE program is fortunate to have more than 200 community representatives volunteer their time on one or more of twelve advisory committees. These individuals review the current curriculum offered to students and help keep CTE programs on track with industry standards.
Three members of the Manufacturing Advisory Committee recently volunteered to spend time in the welding/manufacturing lab at the ATC to trouble shoot maintenance issues with the CNC lathe. CNC machines are used to manufacture metal parts, from auto parts to construction parts. A CNC machine is a powered mechanical device typically used to fabricate metal components in greater numbers, with greater speed and precision that the components could be created individually by hand. This free service from the advisory committee members would have cost thousands of dollars had the maintenance been contracted. |
