Seeking student volunteers to help with book sale
Campuses across the district are collecting books for the 26th Annual Council PTA Used Book Sale, but there are other ways to help besides donating items.  If students need volunteer hours for National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society or any other student organization, please contact Julie Coffern, to set up a time. Volunteers are needed not only during the book sale but the week prior to prepare the space.

Proceeds from the book sale will benefit the LISD Council PTA scholarship fund.  The public is encouraged to drop off any book donations in barrels located in the new Market Street location on 19th and Quaker Avenue, Market Street on 50th and Indiana. Book donations can also be made at any LISD campus during the week of February 18 -22 or at the book fair location in South Plains Mall, on the southwest side between Beal's and Sears.

Elliot named Region 17 Assistant Principal of the YearBarbara Elliot
The Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors
Association (TEPSA) recently named Barbara Elliot of
Hardwick and Rush Elementary Schools in Lubbock ISD, District 17 Assistant Principal of the Year.  She was nominated for the award by Rush Principal Mary McGann.  The Assistant Principal Award recognizes outstanding school administrators for their educational leadership and dedication to children. Honorees will be recognized at the TEPSA Awards Banquet in June.

Elliot's career in education spans 39 years with Lubbock ISD. She has received numerous accolades including being named the Elementary Administrator of the Year by the Lubbock Classroom Teachers Association in 2012.  She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Tech University.

TEPSA represents more than 5,300 elementary and middle school leaders, including principals, assistant principals, central office administrators and supervisors of reading, mathematics, science, special education and other disciplines. Rare Korean Tea Ceremony can be seen next Saturday
A Korean Tea Ceremony, typically only preformed for diplomats and the highest echelons of Korean society, will be made available to the Lubbock community and some Lubbock ISD students. The public event will be on Saturday, February 23, in the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium and Sculpture Court at the Museum of Texas Tech, 3301 4th Street, and begins at 1 p.m. with a welcome and introduction, followed by three lectures. The Korean Tea Ceremony begins at 4:15 and is followed by an intermission and hors d'oeuvres. Two Korean Tea Masters are flying in for the event and will bring special Korean teas used for the ceremony. More than a hundred Lubbock ISD high school students will participate in a special Korean Tea Ceremony being conducted especially for them on Thursday.

At 7 p.m. on February 23, a geomungo concert will be performed by Dr. Jaehwa Lee. It is the first concert of its kind in the United States. The cultural exchange event is being sponsored by the Sowoon Arts and Heritage. More information is available at http://www.sowoonartsandheritage.org.
District to enhance energy conservation efforts
LISD has entered into an agreement with Cenergistic to foster a system of energy conservation measures.  Because energy consumption is the second largest expense for the district, the decision to maximize energy resources makes sound financial sense.  The partnership between LISD and Cenergistic is expected to result in savings in excess of $14 million over the next ten years.  While there are numerous cost-saving strategies that can implemented, none are intended to reduce comfort for students or staff.

The decision to work with Cenergistic is a reflection of the district's continuing commitment to examine and pursue opportunities to enhance opportunities and reduce budget pressures in an atmosphere of diminishing financial resources.

An information session will be take place on Wednesday, February 27, at 4:30 p.m. in the Jay Gordon Room of Central Office to provide insight on conservation measures, as well as job information and the hiring process for the three newly created Energy Specialist positions.  Although funding will be provided for these positions by Cenergistic, they will be LISD employees and eligible for all corresponding benefits.
Peter Buffet visits Talkington
Peter Buffet
Peter Buffett, Emmy Award-winning composer, songwriter, producer and philanthropist, visited Talkington on Friday, February 8.  Buffett stressed his message that success not be spelled with a pair of figurative dollar signs at the end. Buffett and his family, including his father Warren Buffett, are strong advocates and supporters of education.

Pictured above with Peter Buffett are Talkington students Cera Jones, Sirena Coronado, and Berta Ferguson, Talkington principal.

Families flock to ATC Parent Day
Welding Family
Kyle Dunn, left, CHS junior, demonstrated his welding skills for his dad, Dan Dunn (middle) and his granddad, Charley Dunn (right) during Parent Day at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) on Tuesday.  Kyle also takes the Precision Metal Manufacturing class at the ATC.  Both classes are double blocked meaning that Kyle chooses to spend four out of his eight class periods per day at the ATC.  February is CTE month and the ATC's Parent Day/Open House was well attended.  There are more than 100 Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes in Lubbock ISD high schools.  Thirty-five of those classes are held at the ATC.  The new theme for CTE this year is, "Discover Your Future In Career and Technical Education...the secret to getting ahead is getting started NOW in Lubbock ISD!"
FFE grant opportunities still available
The Lubbock ISD's Foundation for Excellence (FFE) has only four opportunities remaining to submit grants for the 2012-2013 school year. Both students and teachers are eligible to receive funding from FFE. Funding is available for summer camps at Texas Tech, technology in classrooms, and state and national competitions.
Student and teacher grant forms can be found on the Lubbock ISD website, or call the Communications and Community Relations office at 766-1066. Don't miss a great opportunity for extra financial support!
