Monterey women's basketball coach wins national honor
Jill Rankin Schneider was recently notified by the USA Basketball Board of Directors that she has been named co-recipient of the 2012 USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year Award. This is the second consecutive year that Schneider has been honored as the USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year. She shares the award this year, as she did last year, with her counterpart, USA men's coach Don Showalter. Schneider was selected for the honor because of her leadership and success with the USA women's team that achieved an 8-0 record and won the gold medal at the International Basketball Federation's (FIBA) U17 (under seventeen years of age) Championship in August. The USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year Award was established in 1996 to recognize a USA Basketball Coach who, during the year of the award, made a significant impact on the success of individual athletes and team performance. |

Commissioner suspends 15% rule once again
In an unexpected move Friday, November 30, Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams suspended the state rule that requires the new high school end-of-course tests to count as 15 percent of the grade in each subject tested for a second year. Williams made the announcement to more than 2,000 school administrators attending the Annual Texas Assessment Conference in Austin.
Commissioner Williams said, "Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system. This deferral also allows the Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system." |

ATC students make pens for troops overseas
Shown above (L to R) are Lubbock High student Jessica Guevara and retired industrial arts teacher Jim Bob Burgoon. Guevara is holding one of the beautiful pens the students are creating.
Students in Dewayne Wallace's Construction Technology class at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) are participating in the Freedom Pens Project with the South Plains Woodturners Association (SPWA) by making writing pens for American servicemen and women overseas.
The Freedom Pens Project provides custom hand-crafted pens to military personnel stationed in foreign countries. The SPWA will purchase the pen kits and seventy Lubbock ISD students will be crafting the pens for delivery to the troops.
Students use a lathe, a machine tool which rotates the piece of work on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting and sanding, to shape the pen from a block of wood.
Since 2004 the Freedom Pens Project has sent 144,679 pens to the Middle East for American servicemen and women.
According to Jim Bob Burgoon, retired LISD industrial arts teacher at Evans and Atkins Middle Schools and member of SPWA, "Every Freedom Pen will serve as a constant reminder to our troops that they are not alone and they have our continued support." Burgoon spent time in three Construction Technology classes at the ATC demonstrating how to make the pens.
