Chaparral band to play for Plainsmen Playoff
The Lubbock Christian University (LCU) Chaparral Band will accompany the Monterey High School (MHS) football team to their regional playoff game against Birdville High School on Saturday, December 1.   The Monterey band is unable to attend the playoff game because, like other area bands, MHS students will be participating in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) auditions also on December 1.  The TMEA region auditions seat students in the Region 16 Honor Band and serves as the qualifying event for TMEA All-State band auditions.
Lubbock ISD Fine Arts Director Will Burks said, "We're so grateful to Andrew Babcock and the Lubbock Christian University Band for stepping up to play at the Monterey playoff game so that our talented MHS band students can be involved in auditions leading to the All-State process."
LCU Director of Bands Andrew Babcock commented, "Ultimately, the decision to do this was the kids, not mine.  It was something they wanted to do and I am pleased and humbled by their willingness to help out during such a busy time in their semester.  We just want to be there to support Monterey High School and help them in any way we can--that will be our mission on Saturday."
Irons Coach named Coach of the Year
Cory Axton Cory Axton, tennis coach and math teacher at Irons Middle School, was recently named Middle School Coach of the Year by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA).  He will receive this honor at the Wilson/TTCA Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet held in New Braunfels on Friday, December 7. Candidates for Coach of the Year must be nominated by their TTCA peers and cannot be nominated by parents, players or administrators.
Irons Middle School Principal Kenneth Casarez said, "Cory's just a very positive influence on kids at our school.  He teaches tennis in a way that makes it fun for our students.  He also reaches out to the younger kids at our feeder schools and makes them feel welcome.  I'm extremely proud of Coach Axton and Irons Middle School is lucky to have him."
Tom Braxton tickets are still available
LISD alumni Tom Braxton's "Comfort and Joy" Christmas tour will be coming through Lubbock on December 7.  Tickets are $30 and available through Select-A-Seat.  The concert will be at the Legacy Event Center, 1500 14th Street.  For additional information call 787-3791.

2012 holiday card winners announcedHoliday Card Stack
The winning student artwork for the district's 2012 holiday cards has been selected.  This year, the judges were so impressed with the quality of the work submitted that two winners per category (elementary, middle school, high school) were chosen rather than one, resulting in a total of six different designs. The cards will be available for purchase in sets of 12, with two of each design per package.  The 12 cards and envelopes are bundled with a decorative holiday bow and cost only $10 per set.

The holiday card artwork was selected by a panel of judges from a group of 30 finalists.  The winning entries in the elementary category were created by Murfee Elementary fourth grader Ella Beard and Rush Elementary third grader Braden Caldwell. The two winning middle school entries were created by Hutchinson eighth grader Helen Jennings and Irons eighth grader Jaden Baldwin-Carr. The two high school winners were created by Talkington tenth grader Pauline Lota and Lubbock High tenth grader Ted Tan.

A limited number of card sets will be available for purchase with all proceeds benefiting the Foundation for Excellence. There are a few sets left over from last year and they too will be available for purchase. For more information on purchasing greeting cards, please call the Communications and Community Relations Office at 766-1062.

Special thanks to the LISD Fine Arts staff for their dedication to this project.  Thanks also to all of the art teachers and students who participated in the contest.  Thanks to Smylie Wilson Middle School art teacher John Gray and Monterey High School art teacher Mark Graham for doing such a great job of organizing the judging panels and keeping track of all the entries.

District exceeds United Way goal--we did it!
UW Thermometer PopsCongratulations! Lubbock ISD staff and students raised more than $205,000 for the Lubbock Area United Way, which is 105% of the $195,000 goal. Thousands of families, adults and children's lives will be made better because of the generosity of Lubbock ISD. The first-ever LISD cookbook was a huge success selling more than 600 copies for a total of $10,387!
A huge
thank you goes out to the campus coordinators.  Without the coordinators dedication to the campaign, we would not be successful.
Thank you, LISD, for your extreme generosity!

Only two weeks remain for open enrollment in new medical plan
All employees who are eligible for health benefits must take action to enroll or decline coverage through the Teams Employee Service Center during the 2013 Health Insurance open enrollment. This means even those who choose to decline coverage must indicate their choice in the Teams Employee Service Center.  The open enrollment period began on November 12 and ends on December 14, 2012.

Click here for the Medical Open Enrollment Instructions.  It is important to follow each step of the instructions.  It seems to be helpful to use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Individuals with current Medical Reimbursement Flex Spending Accounts through First Financial who wish to make changes or need to cancel because they've signed up for the Bronze Plan which provides the Health Savings Account, will have several opportunities over the next two weeks.  First Financial representatives will be at Central Office East Building in room 214 on December 6 and 7.  They will also be in the Risk Management Office December 10-12, room 233, also in the east building.
The Risk Management staff is available if you have any questions.  They may be reached by calling 766-1109.

Time again for U Can Share
For more than 25 years, Lubbock ISD has been in partnership with the South Plains Food Bank in the annual U Can Share Food Drive, which helps feed many hungry families in the Lubbock community and surrounding areas.  Many LISD schools will be featured on KCBD News Channel 11 during the 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts.  Click here to see the schedule of featured campuses.

Schools across the district are working to meet a 25 percent increase in people needing assistance in the Lubbock area, and LISD campuses play a vital role in meeting this ever-growing need.  Lubbock ISD collected more than 85,000 pounds of food and cash contributions exceeding $4,600 last year.

The extremely generous staff and students of Lubbock ISD support the Lubbock Community in many ways, including the U Can Share Food Drive. Thanks LISD!
Miracles Parade benefits Toys for Tots

Coronado students give the gift of life
CHS Blood Drive
Shown above (near to far) are student blood donors Max Randolph, Nicholas Campos and Braden Hensley.

This year, the Coronado High School (CHS) blood drive on November 19-20 helped replenish the local United Blood Services supply which was nearly depleted following the Midland train wreck.  The CHS National Honor Society (NHS) sponsors the drive each year and NHS sponsor Pam Ryan asks the officers to take leadership roles.  "In two days we collected 146 units of blood products-the most we've ever collected at CHS!" Ryan said.

The NHS vice president in charge of the blood drive was Max Randolph (shown above).  He helped sign-up donors, sent text messages to students to remind them of their schedules and provided general assistance on the days of the drive.  Another student who was very helpful was Jared O'Neal.  Sponsors that also played a pivotal role were Colby Malouf, Maribel Castro and Brent Chamberlain.

"We are amazed at the students, teachers, principals and counselors who stepped up to give.  It's a wonderful unifier for our campus." Ryan concluded.
