Give someone you work with a SHOUT OUT
A SHOUT OUT is an easy, online form which will generate 25 words of text onto a megaphone-shaped document recognizing the work of an LISD employee.  A SHOUT OUT can also be submitted for an employee of our partners at ARAMARK, Durham and Sodexo.
This is a great opportunity to express gratitude to those people who make a difference in the lives of our students. Just click on the megaphone to get started.

Hutchinson BEST robotics team qualifies for state
Hutch Robotics 2012 Shown above are the coaches and students of the Hutchinson robotics team.  Pictured (L to R) in the back row are: assistant coach Tim Pritchett, coach Shane Burk and technical adviser Michael Burk; standing are: students McKinley Scheppler, "MJ" Nguyen, Daniel Martinez, Ashton Alexander, Nick Saldana, Dillon Samples, Cheyenne Hamilton, Caleb Gonzales and Michael Esparza; kneeling are: students Sebastian Shaffer, Miguel Isidro, James Berry, Zack Harbour, Johnathan Pesqueda and John Fredenberg.

Hutchinson Middle School recently won second place out of 30 teams participating in the West Texas B.E.S.T. (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) Robotics Regional Competition at Estacado High School. This is the third consecutive year for a Hutchinson team to qualify for the state tournament. In addition to second-place honors in the robot competition portion, the Hutchinson team also received the "Most Robust Award" for having built the robot requiring the least amount of maintenance or repairs during the competition. A robotics team from O.L. Slaton Middle School placed fourth in the robotics portion of the competition.

The local competition is hosted by Texas Tech University's College of Electrical Engineering. Teams receive the same materials and electronic components on the same day and then have six weeks to design, problem-solve, build, trouble-shoot, program and document a working robot that solves the challenge.

Other LISD teams that participated this year were: Lubbock HS, Monterey HS, Coronado HS, Estacado HS and the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center. The tournament includes teams from across the region and includes high schools, middle schools, private and charter schools and home schools.
Open enrollment for new health plan coming soon
Open Enrollment for Health Insurance begins November 12 and continues through December 14. Several opportunities remain for employees to attend information sessions about the changes to the LISD Health Plan. Both sessions are on Thursday, November 15 in the Jay Gordon Room of Central Office. The first is at 3:30 p.m. and the second is at 5:00 p.m. Another great resource is the video of the information session which is available online  here. Additional information about LISD health benefits is available here.

All employees and any family members over age 26 who are on the LISD insurance will need to complete the following activities to be eligible for the $75/month ($900 annually) insurance credit which begins January 2013:
Campus Wellness Blood Draw Screenings: This is FREE for all adults on the LISD insurance. All employees and anyone over the age of 26 carried on the LISD insurance must participate to be eligible for the $75/month credit. Employees and family members may participate at ANY wellness screening location before December 10. The schedule is linked here.  Appointments must be scheduled through the campus nurse. Employees not on the insurance plan may also participate and payroll deduct the $196 cost of the Wellness Blood Draw Screenings. The test results are exclusively for the personal use of employees to identify potential health issues.
Health Calls: Complete two Wellness Health Calls to get an explanation of test results, one before Dec. 28th and one before April 30th. This will provide the opportunity to confidentially review blood work, including the new VAP tests, and set goals for improving/maintaining values
Spring / Know Your Numbers: Participate in a campus or Central Office event for blood pressure checks, weight, height and other updates in the spring.
Project V.O.T.E. results mirror electoral college
Once all of the ballots had been tallied, LISD students participating in Project V.O.T.E. cast a total of 19,354 votes. The cumulative, district-wide result closely mirrored that of the United States Electoral College. On Election Day, President Barak Obama garnered 332 electoral votes to Governor Mitt Romney's 206, or 62% to 38% of the 538 electoral votes. The resulting percentages for the LISD Project V.O.T.E were remarkably similar. Of the 19,354 votes cast, 12,237 students chose President Obama while 7,117 selected Mitt Romney, or 63 percent to 37 percent.

Thanks to Misty Rieber and her social studies teachers for doing a great job helping LISD students learn about a critically important and patriotic process.
United Way, LISD and you
UW Therm at 88
With only one week remaining in the 2012 Lubbock ISD United Way campaign it is important that all campuses make an effort to finish strong and meet their campus goals. The district has currently raised $172,352.25, 88% of the $195,000 target. Throughout the semester, all 23 United Way partner agencies have been profiled in hopes of providing an explanation of where contributions are invested; however, no one can convey an agency's mission quite like an employee.
