A Newsletter from Baby's Space   May, 2013 Volume 4, Issue 5

Baby's Space is a holistic, research-based approach to infant through 3rd grade education and parent support for children and families residing in poverty and violence.

Dear friends,

TerrieRoseandDebbieLund
Debbie Lund and Terrie Rose work as partners everyday to improve Baby's Space.

The strength of an organization often lies in the partnerships it develops and that's true here at Baby's Space. Our partnerships provide us the power to do more for our children and families.

Deb and I partner everyday to improve Baby's Space. We partner with our teachers, parents and the neighborhood we serve. We also take advantage of powering up with great Twin Cities' organizations.

  • Breck School, Minnehaha Academy, Valley View Middle School, South View Middle School, The Blake School and Temple Israel - students visit regularly for literacy tutoring, family nights and holiday events.
  • Children's Theatre Company - the organization brought the theatre to classrooms and teachers gained knowledge to continue the experience.
  • Minneapolis Public Schools - the Childhood Special Education department collaborates with us to provide onsite screening.
  • Native American Clinic and Dental Clinic - a partnership ensures immunizations and physicals are up-to-date.
  • Omniciye Hennepin County - we collaborate to coordinate county assistance for our families.
  • Mother's Day Powwow - once again, we'll participate in this incredible event in the Little Earth neighborhood to show appreciation for our long-term partnership.

Lastly, we partner with you. Whether you donate, drop off diapers (check out our supply needs below) or read this newsletter, your support strengthens our chain of partners. Thank you!

HEROES:Ethel Hill
Ethel Hill
Ethel Hill
Retirement for Ethel Hill meant leaving a full-time career as a manger and pursuing a new career with AmeriCorps as a member of the reading corps. She spends forty hours a week at Baby's Space working with four- and five-year-olds on literacy tutoring to prepare them for kindergarten.

"I love working with kids," says Ethel who has twin granddaughters enrolled in the Ojibwe immersion program that's housed in the same building as Baby's Space. "I truly enjoy being with them and watching them grow and learn. One thing I see with all the children is the absolute delight in learning to write their names. Seeing the pride each student shows as they learn to write their first names and then their last makes my day."

Ethel's is also a master cake decorator and expert at sewing, so she often pitches in and fixes blankets and stuffed animals at Baby's Space. Thank you Ethel for being a reading hero to our children at Baby's Space!

Weekly Parent Groups
Brenda Evans Gekonge
Brenda Evans-Gekonge
We know parenting is hard work - particularly when there's a toddler involved. In response, we've created parent support opportunities for families with toddlers. Brenda Evans-Gekonge, family educator, hosts weekly gatherings for parents with toddlers. These gatherings, which include a parent only session and a parent-child activity, focus on:
  • Building positive, consistent connections between toddlers and parents.
  • Promoting learning and language development through play.
  • Discovering effective and consistent ways to manage toddler behaviors.

The gatherings help parents understand the frequent chorus of "me do it" and "read again!" Using our red cup-blue cup approach, parent and toddler find success negotiating the challenge of thinking big but being little. All parents at the center can take part in individual parent-child play sessions, monthly themed parenting education sessions and our ever-popular family nights.
