Baby's Space is a holistic, research-based approach to infant through 3rd grade education, adolescent mental health services and support for children and families residing in poverty and violence.

Oh Baby! 2013 Invite  I hope you'll be our guest at a special evening celebrating Baby's Space on Friday, February 22 at the Walker Art Center.

1999 seems like yesterday when 40 people gathered in Mary and Jeff Werbalowsky's home to raise money for a new program to serve 21 infants, toddlers and their families in the Phillips neighborhood of south Minneapolis.

Today, 14 years later, Baby's Space has expanded to a preschool, pre-kindergarten and full-year elementary school, Tatanka Academy. Serving nearly 125 children and their families with research driven practices, we have done what few organizations have: Combined federal and local childcare and K-12 funds to create a seamless educational and social support program. However, gaps in funding remains. While the legislators debate the merits of all-day kindergarten, we provide it. When a pregnant mother loses childcare support for her toddler because she is placed on bed rest, we provide a scholarship for the child to continue at Baby's Space. These consistent and high-quality opportunities are made possible by you and your generous donations.

I will forever be grateful for that evening 14 years ago and to those friends who generously listened to an idea and provided the seed money that launched Baby's Space. These friends remain loyal supporters and cheerleaders.

Please join us on Friday, February 22, 6-8 pm at the Walker Art Center for Oh Baby! our premier fundraising event. Chaired by Andrea Mueller, the evening includes great conversation, complimentary martinis and a magnificent art auction that features Minnesota's leading artists. I look forwardDonate  to seeing you at the Walker. Thanks for cheering and supporting.

Heroes Breck School Students
Once a month, a group of 24 seventh and eighth graders from Breck School bound into Baby's Space with energy, joy and enthusiasm to play with and read to their 'buddies' in toddler and pre-kindergarten classrooms.

The consistent visits are a highlight for both parties, as relationshipAngel Trees have developed between the schools. Says Emily, an eighth grade student at Breck, "We get to play with wonderful children that make us laugh, smile and chase us around the room!"

The Breck students also sponsor the Angel Tree program for Baby's Space families who need help providing holiday presents for their families. Ornaments are hung on the Angel Tree representing family wish lists. Breck students and their families choose an ornament and shop for a person. The students shop, wrap and return the gifts to the Angel Tree. The gifts are organized by family and delivered to Baby's Space each December during the holiday Family Night event.

Our thanks to the heroes Breck School - a group of very important angels to Baby's Space!

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE JOINS BABY'S SPACE
Laura Hauer
Laura Hauer

Thanks to a Minnesota Department of Health grant, Baby's Space welcomes Laura Hauer as a public health nurse focusing on women's health.

"My goal at Baby's Space is to help improve the health of our families with special focus on the mothers," said Laura. "Moms can be busy juggling many things like caring for their children so they may not take the time to care for their own health."

Laura will help families access preventative health care and make healthy lifestyle changes. She has a strong interest in family and community health and has been working in the Phillips neighborhood for 12 years.

A SNOWY DAY ENTERTAINS FAMILY NIGHT GUESTS
Mr J Snowy Day
Mr. J from Tatanka Academy reads "The Snowy Day."

Cold weather and wind didn't dampen the warmth of our family night in January. Instead, we celebrated the season with a fun night built around "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats. Students and their families from Baby's Space and Tatanka Academy joined teachers, staff and volunteers for a hot meal and fun activities celebrating winter.
