Dear Friars and Friends,

In mid-October, the ESC held the third Hispanic Ministry gathering. Attending were Andres, Jorge, Abel, Efren, and Lalo from OLG; Rene, Sebastian, Tommy, Victor, and I from SB. With the growing population of Hispanic Catholics in the U.S., especially in the west, it was exciting to be with friars serious about improving our involvement.

California Indians Meet the Pope

On September 23, 2015, Native American representatives comprised of descendants from each of the nine original missions founded by St. Jun�pero Serra, met with Pope Francis in Washington, D.C. Taking place after the canonization Mass honoring Serra, the meeting was organized to help promote continued healing and reconciliation with the Native American communities.

National Geographic photographer Marcus Bleasdale finds beauty in trauma. His work in the Congo is featured in a recent issue of the magazine. "The Price of Precious" documents child labor in camps that extract tin, tungsten and tantalum-minerals used in cell phones.

Iran Nuclear Agreement

Sunday, October 18th, was the actual adoption of the Iran Nuclear Agreement, when processes were set in motion. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi hosted a reception in the Capitol to thank all who had worked to promote the Agreement. In addition to Administration, members of Congress, and other notables, organizations who helped to promote the Agreement were invited, including Franciscan Action Network (FAN) who was represented by Sr. Marie Lucey. Other Catholic groups attending were the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR),  Pax Christi International, and Maryknoll.
