Dear Friars and Friends,

The JPIC Animators from South, Central, and North America met September 20--27 in Bogota, Colombia. Raul Diaz (SB) and Gerry Steinmetz (OLG)  accompanied me to this meeting.

You can read a short summary of our work at the conference in the box below marked JPIC CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAS HIGHLIGHTS.

We didn't go "viral," yet the second video that we made has had 214 views on YouTube. If you haven't seen it yet, it's at:

Ferguson

Clergy and leaders -- including Jim Wallis and Cornel West -- were arrested in Ferguson during "an array of scheduled protests in Ferguson and St. Louis called 'Ferguson October,' which drew hundreds of activists from St. Louis and around the country." More details: click here.

Sanctuary

Sanctuary Movement 2014: The National Sanctuary Movement has a Sanctuary Declaration Sign-On for those willing to at least be supporters of Sanctuary. This has been effective in getting stays of deportation and mobilizing religious communities to personalize the situation as well as disrupt the unjust system.

Money In Politics

Franciscan Action Network's money in politics workshop last week was featured in America magazine.

JPIC Conference of the Americas   HIGHLIGHTS
Bogota, Colombia     September 2014

Proposals for the Order based on the Lineamenta for the General Chapter:
  • Promote greater insertion in all provinces, especially in places of social fracture.
  • Promote a change in article 3 of the GGCC (from a clerical to a mixed institute).

JPIC proposal for the General Chapter:

  • In initial and ongoing formation, promote the three central themes of the Jakarta International Council: lifestyle; environmental justice (mining); eradication of hunger.

Proposals to be pursued by JPIC in the Americas at the continental level:

  • Communication: create a team with a representative from each Conference that will meet annually.
  • Collaboration: promote common work throughout the five conferences of the continent in regard to mining and immigration. One specific activity  will be joint activities between the English-Speaking Conference and the Guadalupe Conference (Mexico/Central America).
  • Preferential Option for the Poor: To insist on and animate in eachConference and entity the necessity (as proposed by Pope Francis) of insertion among the poor, in both initial and ongoing formation (understood as starting point for conversion in the life and mission of our entities, and not as something incidental).

Immigration Reform

OBAMA MAY CUT DEPORTATIONS

Excerpt from The Wall Street Journal  Oct. 29, 2014

'The White House is considering two central requirements in deciding which of the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants would gain protections through an expected executive action: a minimum length of time in the U.S., and a person's family ties to others in the country...

'White House officials also are considering allowing more young people into the 2012 "Dreamer'' program that grants temporary legal status and work permits to those who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, according to two people familiar with discussions. Some 580,000 people were enrolled in the program as of June...

'One of the most politically sensitive questions is whether to include parents of young people in the Dreamer program, known formally as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. These people are among the most politically active in the immigration debate and are demanding that their parents not be left out...

'The White House also is expected to change criteria used in deciding who is a priority for deportation.'

Unaccompanied Minors at the Border

The media has silenced (or been silenced) keeping us informed about the refugee children coming across the desert at our border. It hasn't gone away.

Our friar brothers from Mexico report that many of the trains carrying these kids are stopped within Mexico, by human traffickers, and the children are kidnapped.

Friars from Central America share these figures.

The numbers of children who have

migrated to the US in past years

from El Salvador, Guatemala and

Honduras:

2009  3,304 total
2010  4,444 total
2011  3,933 total
2012 10,146 total
2013 20,005 total
2014 52,205 total
