Dear Friars and Friends,

Here is a photo of the construction of the new

St. Anthony's Foundation building-- the new Dining Room and kitchen (St. Anthony's serves 2,400 meals a day), clothing distribution center, and other services. The top seven floors will provide affordable housing for seniors managed by Mercy Housing....

To the right is St. Boniface Friary.

Many friars from the SB Province minister at St. Anthony's. Pictured below is "D.T."       [Dick Tandy OFM] at the welcome desk of   the Dining Room.

Pictured at the right is Scott Slattum OFM visiting with a woman from the neighborhood.

The Postulants from OLG Province, Vy and Steven, spent a month working at St. Anthony's. I joined with them. It was an immersion experience for them. We enjoyed the hospitality of the friars at St. Boniface.

I am off to the the Novitiate in Wisconsin (leaving Sacramento's 90˚ weather) to join the other U.S. JPIC Animators for classes with the novices. We add on our semi-annual ESC JPIC meeting to the end of the week there.

Please check out the noteworthy issues presented in the boxes below.

..........peace..........Mark

New Website: Franciscans for Ecology

The website, Franciscans for Ecology, was created by Romans VI, a group of JPIC  directors for the Franciscan family: Capuchins, Conventuals, Third Order Regulars, Secular Franciscans, IFC-TOR, and members of the Order of Friars Minor. It was designed by Jim McIntosh OFM of St. Anthony Shrine, Boston. The date for the commemoration of Francis as patron of ecology is Nov. 29.

"The launch date reminds us that our commitment to work for the Integrity of Creation must be concrete and practical," according to an email distributed last month by Joseph Rozansky OFM and Fabio L'Amour OFM of the Order's Office for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation.

Campaign for Nonviolence

Join Franciscan Action Network, Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, Catholic Coalition on Climate Change, etc., in participating in the Campaign for Nonviolence! The campaign is a new, long-term movement to mainstream active nonviolence -- making nonviolence an obvious and natural way of living and of fostering a world that works for all.

Stand up for Food that is Responsibly Grown

The Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) is a new project that brings together workers, growers and retailers in the effort to produce better fruits and vegetables. As produce farms comply with the EFI Standard-for improved working conditions, pesticide management, and food safety-the entire food system sees benefits, all the way from farm workers to consumers.
