Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,
HE'E Legislative News
HE'E Coalition Voting Members reached over a 75% consensus on a position to support Governor Ige's nominees for the Board of Education (BOE), Hubert Minn (Oahu Member), Lance Mizumoto (At-Large Member) and Maggie Cox (Kauai Member); all three were approved by the Senate Education Committee on Friday, April 17, 2015. Congratulations to the newly appointed members who will be starting in June 2015. We will be missing the members who will be leaving the BOE in June 2015, Cheryl Lupenui (Oahu Member), Keith Amemiya (At-Large Member) and Nancy Budd (Kauai Member), who have given extraordinary service to the BOE. The Governor's Messages are posted below in our follow list.
HE'E News
HE'E sends a big Mahalo to David Moyer, Acting Director of the Data Governance and Analysis Branch of the Hawaii Department of Education, who introduced HIDOE's strivehischools.org, which is the Department's interactive data website. Thank you to all HE'E members and participants who came and interacted with the website! We encourage members to go to the site and learn about the interactive functions. Not only is there rich information about specific schools, but there are great visuals to aid understanding and also a function to compare schools around multiple indicators.
Department of Education Seeks Input Regarding School Calendar Models
The Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking public feedback on school calendar models through an online survey. Data from the short, three-part survey will be used to help guide calendar development for the 2016-17 school year and beyond. Public input will help ensure the calendar maximizes learning opportunities for students while meeting the needs of educators and families. The survey is available at http://bit.ly/1CIq6ac through April 22, 2015 Until now, the DOE has developed the school calendar based on prior models, with input from educators. The 2015-16 school calendar was approved by the BOE in December 2014. A DOE School Calendar Workgroup of complex area and school staff met in school year 2014-15 to discuss challenges and opportunities with the school calendar. The workgroup identified clear tenets for calendar development such as completing first semester by winter break and - to the extent possible - having the same number of days in each quarter. We encourage HE'E members to take this opportunity to give input on the 2016-2017 school calendar. Survey results will be reviewed by the DOE's Office of Strategy, Innovation, and Performance to inform development of the 2016-17 school calendar.
