Governor Ige announced the following nominations for the Board of Education:

GM782 (Oahu Member): Hubert Minn has a rich history of service with the City and County of Honolulu and the state's education system. Most recently, he was the deputy director at the city's department of enterprise services where he was responsible for administering and providing overall direction, coordination, management and control of the functions and operations of the department. He was also the deputy director of the department of customer service. Within the department of education, he was a teacher, mentor and senior advisor. Elected to the Hawai'i State Board of Education from 1974-1978 and 1978-1980, he served as the chairperson and held many other positions on the board.

GM783 (At Large Member): Lance A. Mizumoto has 25 years of experience with financial institutions in Hawai'i. Currently he is the President and Chief Banking Officer of Central Pacific Bank where he oversees the organization-wide strategic direction and management of all lines of business, including commercial banking, commercial real estate, retail banking, residential mortgage, and wealth management. Prior to this he has served in various capacities of increasing responsibility at Central Pacific Bank, First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii and International Savings and Loan. He serves on the Chamber of Commerce Board and is a member of the Board of Regents, Chaminade University.

GM784 (Kauai Member): Maggie Cox is a retired teacher and principal with the Hawaii Department of Education and was elected to the state Board of Education for two terms. She was a high school science teacher, and following her days in the classroom, she was a vice principal and principal. She was first elected to the Board of Education in 2004 and served on various committees. She was also the Board member on the management negotiations team dealing with the Hawaii State Teachers Association and Hawaii Government Employees Association. She earned a B.A. from North Texas State University.

HE'E has historically supported the nominations to the Board of Education. The confirmation hearing is set for Friday, April 17, 2015 at 1:15 pm in Conference Room 229. Senate and House Informational Briefing, Friday April 10, 2015, 2:00pm, Conference Room 309

The purpose of this briefing is to review and discuss the findings and recommendations of the December 27, 2012 WestEd Report regarding the transformation and redesign of special education services, so that students with disabilities have improved outcomes.  An implementation update by the Department of Education will be provided.

Second Lateral (4/20/15): all resolutions must be referred to their final committee

 

Second Crossover (4/24/15): all resolutions must be passed through all committees and will return back to their originating chamber

2015 Hawaii Afterschool Alliance Summit: Celebrating Out-of-School and Summer Learning Programs
Hawaii Convention Center, HonoluluMonday, May 18, 2015 ~ 9 am- 3:30 pm

The Hawaii Afterschool Alliance is focused on the core components of afterschool and summer learning opportunities- engaged learning, school-community partnerships, and family involvement. 

Be part of the second annual HAA Summit. It will be a full day of exciting keynote speakers, networking events, and innovative, engaging workshops on out-of-school learning. This year's summit, Celebrating Out-of-School and Summer Learning Programs, brings together stakeholders from across the state to share ideas and best practices, explore new topics, and continue to build a network for high quality out-of-school time learning opportunities for youth.

HE'E Meetings

HE'E Planning Meeting, Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 9:00-11:00am, The Learning Coalition, 841 Bishop Street (Validated Parking at Ali'i Place at 1099 Alakea Street). HE'E is pleased to welcome back David Moyer, Acting Director of the Data Governance and Analysis Branch of the Hawaii Department of Education, who will introduce HIDOE's strivehischools.org which is the Department's interactive data website. Last year, David met with HE'E members to receive input on items that parents and community members would be interested in seeing. Please join us to learn about the new interactive site. After David's presentation, we will also update members on the legislative session, in particular, status on the 2015 legislative budget. 


 
HE'E Planning Meeting, Wednesday, May 13, 2015 4:00-6:00pm, The Learning Coalition, 841 Bishop Street (Validated Parking at Ali'i Place at 1099 Alakea Street). HE'E welcomes presentations by two teacher groups, Learning First, a teacher advocacy group who seeks to put teachers at the center of education policy making, and Hope Street Group, leading the Hawaii State Teacher Fellowship Program. Learning First will introduce their policy paper entitled "A Teacher Perspective on Attendance Policy," and give an update on their Professional Development Policy Fellowship. Hope Street Group Teacher Fellows will introduce their work which centers on gathering teacher voice to influence state policy, and generate solutions to the challenges associated with the implementation of education reform. Please join us for this unique opportunity to hear from our teachers!
