Aloha HE'E Member and Participants,
HE'E News
At the Tuesday, March 17, 2015 BOE Finance and Infrastructure Committee (FIC) Meeting, BOE members discussed proposed policy 304.2 on Family and Community Engagement. The committee decided to consider the testimony that was submitted by HE'E and other family-school partnership stakeholders. If there are any other groups that would like to submit testimony/comment on this policy, please send to the BOE at boe_hawaii@notes.k12.hi.us as soon as possible. The BOE will consider comments and make revisions to the current proposal, which will be presented at the next FIC meeting in April.
HE'E Legislative News
HE'E is considering supporting resolution HCR173/HR109, requesting the BOE and DOE to develop a strategic plan to address chronic student absenteeism. The resolution was drafted by HE'E member Learning First, a teacher advocacy group. We have requested voting members to vote on HE'E's position. The rationale for supporting this resolution include the following:
- HE'E historically has taken an interest in chronic absenteeism; Coalition understand that consistent attendance is positively correlated with student achievement
- Families want to be alerted as soon as possible if children are absent
- Accurate data collecting of chronic absenteeism is critical especially if it is an indicator for school performance
The HCR173 passed out of the House Education Committee and will be referred to the House Finance Committee. We have added the measure to our watch list.
HE'E is also supporting resolution HCR117/ HR70 requesting the BOE to review whether the student representative to the Board should be giving voting rights. HCR117 passed out of the House Education Committee and will progress to the House Judiciary Committee. Please see HE'E testimony here. This measure is also added to our watch list.
