Informational Meeting, Monday, March 9, 2015, 3:00pm, State Capitol Conference Room 309

Education Commission of the States (ECS) was created by states, for states, in 1965. ECS tracks state policy trends, translates academic research, provides unbiased advice and creates opportunities for state leaders to learn from one another.  A quick peek at their website will show the incredible wealth of information that is generated by ECS: http://www.ecs.org/html/aboutECS/home_aboutECS.htm We are fortunate to have Jeremy Anderson, ECS President, visiting Hawaii on Monday, March 9 to share insights on educational trends across the country. Specifically, he will be speaking on the status of Common Core and how various states are implementing teacher evaluation systems.

HE'E Member News

Learning First Hawai'i, a new teacher advocacy group, has created a unique opportunity for teachers who have a passion for improving teacher professional development. Teachers admitted to the Professional Development Policy Fellowship (PDPF) will meet with experts and officials working in areas around PD implementation, conduct readings on PD best practices from around the country, collect feedback from colleagues, and share ideas on how to improve teacher PD. At the end of the research and data collection phase, fellows will be guided through the process of collating their recommendations and will collaboratively write an advisory white paper on the topic of teacher professional development. This paper will be presented to various education stakeholder groups including parent, community, advocacy, policy, and early childhood education groups as well as the Hawaii State Teachers Association and the Department of Education.

This is a paid opportunity for teachers. Upon completion of the program requirements, fellows will be given a $600 stipend.

Click HERE  to access our webpage detailing the fellowship and the application process.

Applications are due by March 10th. Please email Mike Wooten and Meg McCormick at learningfirst.hi.ed@gmail.com for more information.

HE'E News

The Hawai'i Community Foundation is excited to share with you a new grant program through our Pillars of Peace Hawai'i (PoPH) program. As you may know, PoPH began with visits of global peace leaders to Hawai'i, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi. While the global peace leader visits will continue to be a part of PoPH, the primary goal of the program is to have a more direct and sustainable impact on our youth, to encourage compassionate behavior and acts of aloha, and to grow ethical leaders for Hawai'i's future. PoPH strives to reach student audiences with messages that reinforce positive behaviors and encourage healthy futures. This RFP, "Building Peace and Compassion Through Social and Emotional Learning Programs in Classrooms and Communities" seeks to involve teachers, parents, administrators and the collective community in programs that increase social emotional learning and compassionate and mindful behavior in Hawai'i's youth.

Eligible applicants include:

· A private or public school (including public charter school) in the State of Hawai'i.

· A non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with a primary or secondary school partner.

Preference will be given to

· Those serving students in grades 8 or younger.

· Applicants who have participated in the "Ceeds of Peace" or similar workshops to learn about Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs; identify specific needs of their community group, school and/or classroom; and/or develop a clear action plan designed to address these unique characteristics.

The RFP and an addendum with some background information are attached for your information. They are also available on the HCF website under our Nonprofits Grant Opportunities page at http://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/nonprofits/grant-opportunities.
