Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,
Congratulations to the State for winning a $14.8 million multi-year federal grant to launch public preschool programs at charter schools statewide! The Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission applied for the funding to establish 18 new preschool classrooms over four years, starting with the 2015-2016 year.
Mahalo to all those who attended the TLC/HE'E Coalition Holiday Party and to special guests Superintendent Kathy Matayoshi and Board of Education Member Cheryl Lupenui for their support! Happy Holidays to everyone!
Mahalo to Board of Education Member Patricia Halagao and Institute for Teacher Education, College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa researcher Eva Ponte for an informative
presentation on Multi-lingual and English Language Learning (ELL) Education at the December 9 HE'E Planning Meeting. At the Planning Meeting, Coalition Members also touched upon the proposed revised BOE Policies (see link to policies here) and legislative priorities. However, because members wanted a more in depth discussion on both issues, HE'E staff will be hosting special meetings on these specific topics going forward.
HE'E Special Meeting, Thursday, December 18, 2014 8:00-9:30am at The Learning Coalition, 841 Bishop Street, Suite 301 (Validated Parking at Ali'i Place, 1099 Alakea Street)
As a follow up to the December 9 Planning Meeting, HE'E will host a special meeting to focus on legislative priorities. Senator Michelle Kidani who attended the December 9 meeting stressed the importance of bringing ideas for bills to legislators as soon as possible, which is the impetus for having this special meeting. Two main issues will be in focus, Early Education and Instructional Hours. Please contact cheri@heecoalition.org if you will attend.
HE'E Planning Meeting, Wednesday, January 14, 2014, 4:00-6:00pm at a Location To Be Announced
HE'E is pleased to have Department of Education Assistant Superintendent & Chief Financial Officer, Office of Fiscal Services Amy Kunz and Director of Policy, Innovation, Planning, and Evaluation Stephanie Shipton present to the Coalition. Amy will give a presentation about the Department of Education's 2015-2017 Budget. Stephanie will speak about the Access Learning Pilot Project which strives to harness the power of technology to support innovations in teaching and learning. Both speakers' presentations are timely for understanding how the Coalition might support items in the DOE budget during the 2015 Legislative Session. Please SAVE THE DATE for this discussion!

New Federal Program to Address Issues of Educaiton and Employment for Disconnected Youth
Five federal agencies have come together to offer a new opportunity to help communities overcome the obstacles they face in achieving better outcomes for disconnected youth. For the next 100 days, State, tribes, and municipalities can apply to become a Performance Partnership Pilot (P3) and test innovative, outcome-focused strategies to achieve significant improvements for disconnected youth in educational, employment, and other key outcomes.
The P3 initiative enables up to 10 pilots to blend funds that they already receive from different discretionary programs administered by the Departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services and the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Institute for Museum and Library Services. P3 allows new flexibility under Federal statutes, regulations, and other requirements to overcome barriers and align program and reporting requirements, enabling applicants to propose the most effective ways to use these dollars. In addition, pilots will receive start-up grants of up to $700,000.
