HE'E Planning Meeting: Tuesday, December 9, 2014, 9:00-11:00am at The Learning Coalition, 841 Bishop Street, Suite 301 (Validated Parking at Ali'i Place, 1099 Alakea Street) HE'E is pleased to have Board of Education Member Patricia Halagao present to members on a conversation on Bilingual and English Language Learning (ELL) Education. More specifically, Board Member Halagao will touch upon promoting academic achievement of our ELL and multilingual student populations, meeting needs of these families and communities, and developing culturally, linguistically and community responsive policy.
After Board Member Halagao's presentation, we will have a discussion on legislative priorities. Some of the issues that members have brought up thus far include funding for early education, air conditioning for schools and support for professional development. If you should have any ideas or priorities, please send them to cheri@heecoalition.org.

HE'E News
Mahalo to Darrel Galera, Ray L'Heureux, Roberta Mayor, and Denise Murai of the Education Institute of Hawaii who presented at HE'E's meeting on Wednesday, November 19. The meeting room was filled to capacity and members were able to hear more about the delegation's trip and views on school empowerment. Members also had time to mingle and network with each other, an opportunity that is appreciated given everyone's busy schedule. For those of you were not able to make the meeting, the following are background materials provided at the meeting which touch upon school improvement and also the work that was done in the Edmonton School System.
Hawaii School Empowerment Conference: Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29, 2014, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Moanalua High School
The Education Institute of Hawaii is extending an invitation for all educators, policymakers, parents and community members to attend the Hawaii School Empowerment Conference scheduled for Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Moanalua High School. In addition to respected education leaders from Hawaii, the conference will feature outstanding "school empowerment leaders" and keynote speakers from the Edmonton Public Schools, Clark County School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and the Alliance for College Ready Public Schools.
Hawaii Afterschool Alliance (HAA) Seeking Executive Director
Hawaii Afterschool Alliance is seeking a strong Executive Director to build the Alliance in becoming a leader in the afterschool and public education field, implementing policies and action plan set forth by HAA Steering Committee. The focus is on building solid foundation for statewide organization working to improve sustainability and quality of afterschool and out-of-school programs in Hawaii. See What's New at Education First: Teacher Evaluation "Practical Advice" Implementation Guides
Education First (http://www.education-first.com) is preparing a series of briefs with practical advice for state and district policymakers on how to design and implement high-quality teacher evaluation and support systems. The first three briefs cover Classroom Observations, Student Surveys and Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). Education First also developed this introduction brief, which gives an overview of the series. Education First will release the final three briefs of the series-on Professional Learning and Support, Communications and Engagement and Using Data from Multiple Measures-in coming months.
