Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,

HE'E Meetings
Mahalo to Randall Roth, Joan Husted and Marsha Alegre for presenting about the Hawaii Education Institute, an exciting new organization. HE'E members engaged in spirited dialogue and look forward to the Institute's progress.  Three documents were presented at the meeting which are listed.
The Institute will function as an education think tank with an overarching goal of improving the quality of public education in Hawaii so that more children thrive and more professionals reach their full potential as educators. The Institute will conduct studies that are independent, objective and nonpartisan, focusing on principles and practices of effectiveness.  It will also gather the perspectives and insights of principals and other administrators, teachers, parent groups and community leaders through surveys and focus groups; organize and promote public forums; and work directly with media to help ensure news coverage of public education issues that is predictably accurate, comprehensive and timely.

For more information about the Hawaii Education Institute, please contact Randall Roth (President) and Darrel Galera (Executive Director), whose contact are in the first document.

Common Core Implementation in the Department of Education

Last school year HE'E staff worked with the Department of Education's Office of Strategic Reform to help give guidance and support to certain Complex Areas on Common Core outreach to parents, families and communities. We explored what parents and families were concerned about on Common Core and how Complex Areas could communicated effectively to community members about the shift to Common Core. One of the Complex Areas that we worked with was the Kailua/Kalaheo Complex, who chose to create a video to highlight the work of their schools on Common Core.  Please take a look at the video here. The response to the video has been very positive. According to Complex Area Superintendent Suzanne Mulcahy, principals have shown it at opening of school year meetings, at PTSA meetings, at Back to School Nights, and other opportunities. It is a great way to share the work of the schools with the community.

2014 Children and Youth Summit: Friday October 10, 2014

The 2014 Children and Youth Summit, which will take place this year on Friday October 10, 2014 is an opportunity for youth to identify their priority areas and assist the Legislature in identifying key children and youth issues that need to be addressed in the 2015 Legislative session.  We invite adults and students to attend.
