HE'E Quarterly Meeting, Wednesday, May 7, 2014, 4:30-6:30 pm at The Japanese Cultural Center, 2454 S. Beretania Street. HE'E is pleased to host a screening of the film, "Ola- Health is Everything,"  a film about health, hope and the power of communities to heal themselves. The film travels to remote parts of Hawai'i and discover selfless individuals who've created innovative solutions to the challenges affecting their communities. Local film maker Matthew Nagato will introduce his film and give a Q&A at this meeting. Film trailer is here and Matthew Nagato's Ted Talk on this film is here Please join us for this exciting opportunity!   The sequel to Ola is focused on education, and Matthew will give us a preview about Part II.  Please register for meeting at this link here. Hawaii partners with national nonprofit to engage teachers

Exceptional teacher leaders selected by Hope Street Group will be trained in peer and community engagement, data collection and media strategies -all with the intent of sharing information with the community about the Hawaii Common Core standards. For more information about the program, please click here. The Hope Street Group Hawaii Fellowship application window (for teachers) has opened. Information for application is here. Deadline for fellowship application is May 15, 2014.  

 

Legislative News 

The 2014 legislative session is almost complete and the final floor vote will be completed on Thursday, May 1. It has been emotional session, culminating with the last day of conference committee, when 14 education bills died due to lack of time for a vote and then an unprecedented procedure taking place on Monday, April 28, when conference for 3 education bills was reconvened. Thank you very much to Coalition members who participated in the process. Your advocacy has been a huge contribution and is greatly appreciated! 

 

The list below is an update of bills that that HE'E has followed and have survived the session. Please note that a resolution, SCR51, was created and passed on the administration of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
