In the first hour of the meeting, we will have key players in the Castle Redesign to give an update on their exciting initiative in the Castle Complex. In the second hour of the meeting, we will discuss topics for policy advocacy and the upcoming legislative session. For the policy meeting, one proposal has been submitted for the Coalition to discuss, listed here. If you would like to send other items for discussion, please send to cheri@heecoalition.org. A big Mahalo Amy Kunz, Assistant Superintendent & Chief Financial Officer, Office of Fiscal Services of the Hawaii State Department of Education, and Christi Tran, Trent Ward and Tom Pyun of uMinca, Inc. who presented at the last HE'E Quarterly Meeting on October 21, 2013. Thank you also to members who attended to meeting and gave valuable feedback! Amy's presentation is posted here. Further discussion and follow up on Amy's presentation will take place at the next HE'E Planning/Policy Meeting, on November 13, 2013. We will keep in touch with uMinca on their development of the game platform and keep everyone informed.

Hawaii fourth-graders outperform nation in mathematics, 2013 'Nation's Report Card' shows
Hawaii's fourth- and eighth-graders continue to progress in mathematics and reading; and for the first time, the state's fourth graders have scored above the national average in math. This is according to the "The Nation's Report Card" released today by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) spring 2013 state-by-state results. See link to DOE website here.

KINDERGARTEN AGE HAS CHANGED!
The Hawaii Executive Office of Early Learning (EOEL) has created materials to publicized to providers and the public about the upcoming Kindergarten age change for Hawaii Public Schools. Starting August 14, 2014, your child must be 5 on or before July 31 to enter kindergarten. Please see poster for general public here, flyer for families here and flyer for providers here. U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, along with community leaders, will present a panel discussion on issues affecting Hawai'i families. Learn more about equal pay, caregiving for our keiki and kupuna, early education, and college affordability. Following the panel presentation, attendees are invited to join our presenters in breakout sessions to further the discussion and create a forum for feedback.
