Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,
HE'E Vote on Family School Partnership Work-VOTING MEMBERS PLEASE RESPOND
HE'E has recently been working on a family-school partnership initiative, organizing tips that schools can use do to improve their family-school partnership strategies. Initially, the objective was to put together a simple list of things schools could do. However, because of a very positive reception by the DOE and our members' enthusiasm, the Coalition has decided to continue working on the initiative and expand into creating a useful toolkit for schools. We have completed a first step in the work, creating some tips for "Welcoming Families," and "Communicating Effectively," which are two standards based on the National PTA Standards for Family-School Partnerships. With an affirmative vote, we intend to continue and develop tools for all six standards in the next year. We will be working with the DOE in this effort, a real collaboration!
We would like to send the following cover letter and list to the DOE on this initial work. Because it is a Coalition sponsored effort, we ask for a vote to endorse the Coalition's work. Please see the following documents.
1. Cover Letter to DOE on Family-School Partnership Initiative
2. Family-School Actions on Welcoming Families and Communicating Effectively
Voting Members: Please vote YES if you agree to endorse the Coalition's work, NO if you do not agree to endorse the Coalition's work and ABSTAIN if you do not want to take a position.
A YES vote is affirmative, a NO vote is negative and a BLANK vote is affirmative.
If you would like to send comments along with your vote, please feel free to send to cheri@heecoalition.org.

HE'E News
HIDOE recently launched their new website: http://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/Pages/home.aspx.
We really want to give substantive family and community feedback on the new website. Take a minute to try and navigate the site. Please send us your thoughts with constructive comments. We will consolidate and send the feedback to the DOE from the Coalition. The website was designed for the parents and community members so let's help them get it right! Please send comments to cheri@heecoalition.org by noon Friday, July 26, 2013.
HE'E Member News
At our last Planning Meeting, Margaret Higa from the Hawaii International Dyslexia Association (HIDA) shared information about SCR120, which passed during the 2013 legislative session. The resolution requests that the BOE and DOE evaluate the implementation of a plan to promote greater awareness of Dyslexia and other literacy challenges. Here are two more documents for reference.
1. FAQ on SCR 120 and Comprehensive Plan for Teaching Reading
2. Final Comprehensive Plan for Teaching Reading
