Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,

Legislative and Policy News

Please see HE'E's legislative update as of April 19, 2013.  Please also see Allen Awaya's (from Senator Tokuda's office) most recent legislative update and hearing update.

The legislature is in conference until next Friday, April 26, 2013.  Conference sessions need only 24 hours notice and after the initial conference session, subsequent meetings are announced at the end of the session. We are tracking the bills the Coalition is supporting but for real time updates, please check bill status at www.capitol.hawaii.gov.

On Friday, April 19, 2013, at 3:00pm in Conference Room 329, there will be conference hearings on 21st Century School bills, HB865 HD1 SD1 and SB237 SD2 HD1, as well as the bill on School Readiness, SB1093 SD2 HD2, and on Early Childhood Education, SB1095 SD2 HD2.

We encourage you to come to the hearings to participate in the process!

We have good news on HE'E supported legislation. Concurrent Resolutions SCR49/HCR57 on Family-School Partnerships have progressed and will go to the floor. Also, the Governor's Messages 749, nominating Kerrie Urosevich to the Early Learning Advisory Board and Governor's Message 779, nominating Brian De Lima to another term at the Board of Education, will also move to the floor.

Instructional Hour bill, SB238 HD2, unfortunately, failed to pass the House with a 30-21 vote. We will continue to follow the progress of the instructional hour task force that was recently recommended by the National Center on Time & Learning.

Please let me know if you have comments on any of our legislative actions at cheri@heecoalition.org.
