Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,
We had a great turnout of over twenty members at the HE'E Meeting on Tuesday October 9, 2012 with guest speakers Senator Jill Tokuda, Representative Roy Takumi, Governor Abercrombie's Senior Analyst Kate Stanley and Executive Office of Early Learning Director Terry Lock. Mahalo to our distinguished guests and to those who attended the meeting! If you missed the meeting, notes are posted on HE'E's website at this link.
We are following up with a Policy and Social Justice Work Group meeting on Wednesday October 17, 2012 from 9:00-11:00am. The meeting will be held at The Learning Coalition, 841 Bishop Street Suite 301, with validated parking at Ali'i Place at 1099 Alakea Street. All members are invited to this meeting even if you are not regular members of the policy or social justice work group. A draft of the meeting agenda is here. The purpose of this meeting is for the policy team and social justice work group members to give an update on their work and decide on policy recommendations to make to the full coalition. Please let me know if you will be attending the Wednesday meeting.
We would also like to remind members of other upcoming meetings:
October 15, 2012, 10:30am-12:00pm at The Learning Coalition Office-Guest Speaker Dr. Malbert Smith of MetaMetrics: Dr. Smith will be speaking about the Lexile Scale, a measure that represents a student's level of reading ability on a developmental scale. We often hear that parents/families and community are not familiar with technical concepts in education. This is a great opportunity for the community to become familiar with the Lexile Scale and to gain an understanding that can help families better support their children in reading. A special thank you to HIDOE for their generous support of this presentation.
We have changed the venue from the Japanese Cultural Center to the The Learning Coalition Office at 841 Bishop Street Suite 301. Validated parking available at Ali'i Place at 1099 Alakea Street. Please pass the word to people on the change in venue.
November 7, 2012, 4:00pm-6:00pm at the Japanese Cultural Center-Large Group Meeting:
At our quarterly meeting we would like to have our members speak for a few minutes about their organization's latest news. It will be another opportunity to share the great work of the Coalition. Please save the date! Japanese Cultural Center is at 2454 S. Beretania Street. Refreshments and validated parking will be provided.
Conference call capability is also available for all meetings; if you would like to participate remotely please let us know.
