Aloha HE'E Members and Participants,
We are looking forward to the fall, preparing for the upcoming legislative session. We will be looking at policy advocacy ideas in the September Policy/Planning meeting as well as inviting policy makers to share their ideas in the October Planning meeting. Already, a workgroup made up of HE'E members and representatives of the BOE and DOE have convened to work on the recommendations made in Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR)79. We are also keeping watch on the progress of the ESEA Flexibility Application as well as the progress of the Department's Strategic Plan. We also want to congratulate Calvin Endo of the Hawaii State PTSA for being selected as a Champion of Change, a national recognition by the White House for someone who has made a difference in the community. Calvin was one of twelve PTA members nationally that was chosen.
DOE seeking ESEA Flexibility Letters of Support
The Hawaii Department of Education will be submitting the ESEA Flexibility Application on September 6 and is seeking letters of support from the community. HE'E will be drafting a letter of support but we also strongly encourage members to write their own letters from their respective organizations if they should be in support of the Application. Members who attended the HE'E Lunch with Stephen Schatz as well as Richard Wenning's Growth Model Presentation and Q&A with Stephanie Shipton may remember some of the highlights of Application. If you should need a sample letter of support we can provide one but fully customized letters are always preferred. Letters of Support may be sent to NCLBFLEX@notes.k12.hi.us by September 5, 2012.

Teach for America
Teach For America Hawai'i is a non-profit organization focused on expanding educational opportunities for children by recruiting and training top college graduates who commit two years to teach in Hawai'i's schools and continue to become leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity for all children of the Hawaiian Islands. Started in 2006, Teach For America Hawai'i has grown to both the Big Island and O'ahu and is serving over 13,500 students this academic year. Through emphasizing Kama'āina recruitment to placing corps members from Wai'anae to Ka'u on Hawai'i Island, our current corps of 148 teachers and 135 alumni continue to work in Hawai'i, impacting education from inside and outside of the classroom. This year, we brought a record 96 new teachers to O'ahu and Hawai'i Island and many were hired by principals in historically harder to staff areas of our state. We are in a state of growth to serve the keiki of Hawai'i and are constantly looking to partner with and learn from other organizations. We are honored to be part of the HE'E family and look forward to the change that is possible for our children in Hawai'i.
