We want to update you on exciting Coalition news and member events!

  

1. Coalition voted to support three policy team recommendations on the following education bills.
  • Support of SB2789/HB2527, relating to performance evaluations
  • Support of SB2535/ HB2007, relating to bell schedules and instructional hours
  • Oppose section which eliminates Junior Kindergarten in SB2545/HB1683, relating to early education
Coalition will also recommend in a request to the Education Committees that a second Senate Concurrent Resolution be created to ask the Department of Education to monitor implementation of the recommendations set forth in the Department of Education's Report on SCR145 .

  

Policy Team will consider supporting SB2012, a a bill designed to help reduce the repair and maintenance of facilities  (which include school facilities). 

  

2. Coalition has updated an "Action Plan 2012" for HE'E's Strategic Plan. 
Please take a look to review actions, timelines and groups responsible.

  

3. Department of Education seeks feedback from parent on School Quality Survey
Survey goes out to selected parents in grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 11 will be asked to complete the survey 
and return it to the school in a prepaid envelope by no later than March 30. Department has updated their website with a video. See following link for updated press release. 
 
4. Transition to Middle School:  Presentation & Parent Roundtable Discussion 
February 24th 6-7:30pm at Ching Auditorium, Chaminade University.  (See Flyer)
  
Parents for Public Schools of Hawai'I (PPS-HI) and the Hawai`i Association of Middle Schools (HAMS) are holding an event for parents who are wondering what to expect from middle school. The public is invited to learn about the "middle school culture," excellent public middle schools, and what to consider when deciding between public schools.  

 

5. Raising Peacebuilders 360 Workshop
February 25th 9am-12pm, KEY Project, Kaneohe, HI. (See Flyer)
 
Sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution Hawaii to learn from education experts and parents 
about what it will take to raise generations who will become leaders in global and community-based problem solving efforts. 

 

6. Castle Complex Town Hall Meeting "Great Teachers, Strong Schools, A Thriving 96744 Community"

  • How do we nurture good teachers and ensure effective teaching?
7. SPIN Conference 'SPIN' the Case for Evidence Based Conference invites display participants
April 21 8:30am-3:30pm, University of Hawaii Campus Center
 
SPIN would like to invite you to share your agency's resources at our upcoming SPIN Conference, 'SPIN' The Case for Evidence Based, Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the University of Hawaii Campus Center Ballroom.  The conference goal is to showcase some of the opportunities that families have to create positive futures for their children with special needs. If you are willing and able to have a display at the conference, SPIN would like to hear from you by March 16, 2012.  Please fill in the attached sheet and mail or fax back to SPIN.
