New Club Chartered in Pott. Co.-Wamego
The Pott. Co.-Wamego Charter Celebration was held September 7, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wamego. More than 80 Kiwanians from all over Kansas attended. Refreshments were served by the culinary class of Wamego High School. This is the first new club chartered in Kansas since the Johnson County Club chartered in September of 2011. The Formula team who worked on this included Governor Warren Eckelman, District Secretary Rusty Thomas, Vice Governor Jan Maxwell, Past Governor John Fajen, and Formula Chair Carolyn Dwire. The group photo is of the Charter members who attended and Kansas District officials who were members of the Formula team.

Governor's Message:
Reflections on the Past Year; Poised to Start the New Year
It's that time of the year to pause and reflect back over the last eleven months. The District just finished a month ago a great District Convention; 48 clubs were represented with over 135 Kiwanians and guests attending. Our Trustee for next year, Chaing Chu-Ching, was in attendance as well as Brad Boyd from KI Indianapolis. I-Plan education, Formula and Risk Management updates were the main topics of the breakouts. A good turnout of attendees and good information made for a great Convention.
The District had a good year. We organized a new club in Wamego. Club Secretaries seem to be keeping their rosters current throughout the year giving a better look at the membership totals. And  I will add that membership seems to be on target for positive growth. We did, however, lose some clubs and their membership losses still have us at a small positive growth.
We reached our Eliminate goal for donations and pledges in December and made good progress in fulfilling those pledges the rest of the year. Rock Springs is at the halfway time point for our $250,000 goal and at the District Convention they were presented a $15,000 check leaving $95,000 to go to reach the goal.
The Young Children Priority One (YCPO) Project at District Convention again collected for a Head Start program, this time for Augusta. Lots of needed supplies and toys were supplied by our generous clubs is attendance as well as some cash and money card donations. Thank you Kansas Kiwanians.
I would like to thank my Board and Lt. Governors for all the work and support they gave me during the last year; it was greatly appreciated. And a special thanks to past Governor Dave Hurrelbrink and last year's Trustee Dewey Smith for their guidance. Last, I thank you, the membership for electing me to be your Governor and represent the District for the last year.
Finally, we are poised for a good year next year. We have more sites located for more clubs and crews ready to get to work on them. The I-Plan has provided us with a five-year plan of what where and how to reach our goals, and it is living, meaning it will be updated so that we know what needs should be addressed. We have a plan and we have a new Board ready; let's make the Kansas District even greater.
Governor Warren Eckelman
District Secretary Notes:
Thanks for the Privilege of Serving You!
Rusty Mugshot
This will be my final column as District Secretary. For the past seven years it has been my privilege to serve you, the members of the Kansas District.

I was the first District Secretary in Kansas to encourage and implement that more information be sent and received electronically. On-line meeting registration was implemented and this has saved money for the District, your clubs and you.

I have responded to thousands of email requests and queries from club secretaries, presidents, and other members. I hope I have been able to assist you in the manner you expect and deserve. This volunteer position has been a labor of love for me and, for the most part, I have enjoyed my service to all of you, immensely.
At the recent District Convention in Wichita, I was humbled by the recognition and the thanks of the past governors and those in attendance. It was a difficult time, knowing that in a few short weeks I would be leaving a position I was not yet ready to leave. I have received many emails and phone calls from many of the members in the District thanking me for my dedication and service. It is really all of you who are my friends, who receive my thanks.

I wish to thank past District Secretary Ken Kern, for his mentorship and guidance. To Kiwanian Editor, Steve Russell, thanks for your countless hours of dedication and for a job well-done. To those past governors who have helped along the way, thank you for stepping up and your invaluable assistance. To Governor Warren Eckelman and Linda, I could not ask for better friends. No one could ask for more, and I have been blessed to know and work with these fine Kiwanis members.
Going forward, I will still be very involved in Kiwanis; in my club, division, and district. I will see all of you, my friends, at the next District Mid Year. Until then, I remain,
Yours in Kiwanis Service,
Rusty
I Plan and THE FORMULA Work Hand in Hand
What a fantastic District Convention this past August! The breakout sessions were phenomenal.
The I-Plan Team did a great job of informing the membership about the I-Plan. We need the 2016-2017 presidents and club boards to have your clubs work on an I-Plan so you may have a plan for your future. You have our district I-Plan to guide you in forming your own plan.  Remember Inspiration, Impact, Image & Investment. This is our future and we have the help and support of Kiwanis International. Materials will be coming soon!
Engage THE FORMULA in your clubs to invite and recruit new members. Every new member provides assistance to 206 more children in your community or around the world. If you need assistance in your area please contact your Lt. Governor or Carolyn Dwire, District FORMULA Coordinator. They can provide you with the names of Club Counselors and Club Openers. We all have to step up this year and the Kansas District has to work as a team! Our goal is 329 new members (net) and four new clubs! Love It, Share It, Live It.
The I-Plan and THE FORUMULA work hand in hand to make our District stronger and more vibrant to our communities. So fellow Kiwanians, stand tall, grow Kiwanis and energize the dream for our children! I want to see all children surrounded by the people who encourage and support them, love them, and care for them. All children will be happy, healthy, safe and loved! I am excited to have you as part of "Dream Team 102!"
Cynthia Bender - Governor Designate

Time to Re-Engage With Your SLP Sponsors
School has started. Engage with your club faculty sponsor and school principal. This is true for all levels of service leadership whether K-Kids, BUG (Bringing up Grades), Terrific Kids, Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K or AKtion club.
These K-Family clubs are gearing up for service in your community. Let the sponsors know that you are there for each K-Family club. Find out how your club and your members can support these K-Family members. You will find their energy and enthusiasm for service is contagious.
If you don't have a service leadership program sponsored by your club, now is a great time to reach out to schools in your area and help improve the lives of children in your community, one child and one school at a time. If you are loooking for ways to start up a K-Family service leadership program, please contact me [email protected]. Together with our district administrators and your Lt. Governor, you and your club can impact the children of your community.
Jan Maxwell - Governor Elect
Youth Protection Compliance Is Required
The requirements for Youth Protection training and education for clubs is nothing new as we finish year three of the implementation from Kiwanis International. Still we have clubs in Kansas who are not adequately reporting on their monthly reports if their clubs have completed a training or education during the Kiwanis year. Many clubs have not provided information on the Kiwanis Advisors to the Sponsored Leadership Programs (SLPs) for which they sponsor. Kiwanis Advisors to SLPs need background checks and club secretaries are responsible for reporting who these individuals are in their respective clubs and whether they have had the appropriate background checks.
Current Lt. Governors in the Kansas Kiwanis District have lists identifying which clubs are compliant with the required training and which clubs have appropriately identified their SLP Kiwanis Advisors. Hopefully those clubs that have not reported anything have been contacted by their Lt. Governors. If any club secretary has difficulty finding the appropriate boxes to "check" on the monthly reports, please contact me, Mary Hammond at [email protected] and I'll be happy to assist you.
Clubs are required to provide a yearly training or education on the Youth Protection Guidelines and these guidelines do change and get updated periodically so the training is necessary just for that reason alone. A great time to provide such training is during Youth Protection Week, September 11 - 17. All the resources a club needs for appropriate training can be found at www.kiwanis.org/youthprotection. Handouts can be downloaded as well as a PowerPoint to download and share. If any club has questions on this training or the information provided, please contact me.
One important change to the guidelines, effective October 1, 2016, involves background checks for the SLP Kiwanis Advisors. To maintain a consistency in background checks, Kiwanis Advisors will be required to complete a check through Safe Hiring Solutions which is a partner with Kiwanis International. Kiwanis Advisors that have their correct contact information with Kiwanis International will receive an email with this information and a link to direct them to obtain the background check. This is an example of why it's important that club secretaries input this contact data on all advisors. Click on the following link for additional information and for the link for Safe Hiring Solutions. http://www.kiwanis.org/kiwanisone/lead/risk-management/youth-protection-guidelines/background-checks-kiwanis-advisors
***NOTE - if a Kiwanis Advisor to an SLP has had a background check through another entity, even if that check has not expired, he or she MUST complete a new check through Safe Hiring Solutions.
Changes in various leadership posts and committee assignments in the Kansas Kiwanis District take effect on Oct. 1, 2016. The position of Youth Protection Coordinator will fall under the guidance of Tomi Foust of Hutchinson. Tomi is looking forward to this opportunity and we have been working together to make this a smooth transition. She will attend training in Indianapolis in October and will be a great resource for our District as we continue to make Youth Protection a top priority. Here is her contact information: E-mail: [email protected]; Cell #: 620-727-0863; Address: 3401 N. Severance, Hutchinson, KS 67502
Thank you for allowing me to serve in this role for the last three years

New PR Position to Enhance Kiwanis Brand
The Kiwanis brand is all the things that define how people see us. It is the impact we have on communities around the world, and the emotion our words and actions instill in them. Much of our brand is defined by public and media perception but the visual brand is within our control. To help us consistently and effectively bring our brand to life through various communications, Kiwanis International has developed a new position for a PR Coordinator and in the Kansas District, I have agreed to assist in this opportunity.

Mary Hammond In this new position and working with the District leadership team, we will focus on Kiwanis key messages, the profiles of different audiences and how we can best deliver our brand. We will make sure we use the correct logos for all marketing pieces not only at the District level but at the club level too. The use of correct logos will involve making sure our colors and type face are in line with Kiwanis International standards. This is important because many of us; Kiwanis members, clubs and districts, have put our own "twist" to a Kiwanis logo to distinguish our club from the club 30 miles away. Over time so many different Kiwanis logos exist in various communities that to the untrained eye or non-Kiwanian, it can appear that these entities represented are not actually the same organization with the same mission or vision. We need to correct this misconception and align ourselves under the correct branding that is Kiwanis.

Through newsletter articles, website messages and convention workshops we will work to enhance our brand image. The Kansas District of Kiwanis will introduce a new public relations/marketing plan that is more aligned with Kiwanis International goals. We will better utilize the resources available to us by Kiwanis International as they have already done the work. Be watching for more information on branding and if you have comments or suggestions, please share them with me at [email protected]

Reflecting on Successes of Past Year And
Looking Ahead for Kansas Kiwanis Foundation
Kansas Foundation Logo
It was great to see everyone at the 66th Kansas District Kiwanis Convention in Wichita. As we close out another successful Kiwanis year and ready to begin another Kiwanis year let's reflect on the past year and some of the successes of the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation.
The Foundation awarded 32 scholarships totaling over $20,000, provided $4,000 in grants to Kansas District Kiwanis Clubs, and provided funds for Lt. Governor's training and Key Leader. The Foundation also provided funds for Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club, K Kids, and Aktion Clubs, paid out the Living Recognition and Service Memorial to the designated recipients, awarded Life Membership and Putnam Awards, and helped with the Rock Springs 4-H project by keeping the funds.
A Life Membership or Putnam would be a great way to honor a long time member in your club or honor your President for the work he or she did this last year. Give me a call or send an email and I would be glad to give you the details.
The Scholarship Application and Instructions will be available on the District Web Site and each Division Representative will have copies. You may also send me an email and I will provide you with a copy. The Scholarship Application deadline is February 1, 2017.
The Foundation encourages all Kiwanis Club in the District to make an annual Club Contribution to the Foundation in the amount of either $5, $6 or $10 per member. We currently have only eight Kiwanis Clubs that have not made a Club Contribution for 2015-2016.
Every Kiwanian is a member of the Foundation and we welcome at all board meetings of the Foundation. The next Board Meeting of the Foundation will be on October 15, 2016 at the UMB Conference Center located at 100 S Santa Fe in Salina, Kansas.

Rock Springs Continues Serving Kansas Youth As District Project Keeps Moving Toward Goal
Rock Springs is alive and well. The camp served several thousand youth this summer including Kiwanis Key Leader and is available for activities for Kiwanis and the general public year round. These activities are made more rewarding by the changes to Heritage Hall that have occurred due to the payment of $155,000 on the District's pledge of $250,000.
This payment has only been possible through the continued generosity of our clubs and individual members. One hundred percent of the money collected has been deposited with  the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation and in turn given to the Kansas 4-H Foundation for Rock Springs.
At the recent District Convention, we were able to present the 4-H Foundation with another check for $15,000, leaving us with a balance on hand of about $200. Since convention, we have raised upwards of $5,000 with the latest amount coming in a generous check from the Abilene Kiwanis Club.
But, we need much more. Think about putting Rock Springs in your club's budget. Have a fund raiser with the proceeds going to Rock Springs. Individuals can make a tax deductible contribution to the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation in the name of Rock Springs.  If your club or a business you know would like a presentation on Rock Springs, contact me,  Marc Potter (816-419-9675), and I will be happy to come or send someone to present.
Please remember we are partners with the Kansas 4-H Foundation in serving the youth of Kansas. They are our future and you can play a major role in that future by supporting this project.  Thank you for what you have done, are doing and will do for our youth.
Marc Potter - Co-Chair, Kansas District Service Project
Thanks to Clubs and Members for Successful 2016 Key Leader; Time to Budget for Next Year
Key Leader
Kansas District Kiwanis 2016 Key Leader, which was held at Rock Springs June 2-4, was a success with a total of 50 students from 22 different high schools or middle schools. Six of those students served as student facilitators with Emily Stanley, Key Club Governor, as one of the student facilitators. She had two of her Lt. Governors in attendance with one of them serving as a student facilitator also.
Thanks to the Kiwanis Clubs who sponsored and sent students from your various high schools. A special thanks to the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation and the many clubs who sent money to pay for students who attended and did not have sponsorship from Kiwanis clubs. We received enough money to pay the unpaid balance.
Johnson County Kiwanis Club provided the snacks for the Key Leader event and they were greatly appreciated. Governor Warren Eckelman, Governor Elect Cindy Bender, and Vice Governor Jan Maxwell all served as chaperones. Other adults who served as chaperones were Darrell Adams, Beth Davis, Robert and Barbara Esfeld, Mary Hammond, Robert Maxwell, and Scott Moore. Their help was greatly appreciated.
At the Kiwanis State Convention, several Kiwanis members spoke of the change in their students who attended Key Leader. Students leave the Key Leader weekend changed and ready to begin a new venture in their lives as they return to high school in the fall.
For those who don't know what Key Leader is, it is a weekend experience in leadership, growth, personal development, fun, and friends. It is open to any high school student that has a desire to lead, to help, and/or to give. It combines hands-on learning, group interaction and focused discussion. Over a Key Leader weekend, the young person grows as a leader and as a person. During that time, new friends are made.
The next Key Leader weekend is June 2-4, 2017, at Rock Springs. We have excellent facilities at Rock Springs for Key Leader and have been guaranteed that all of our activities will be at Heritage Hall, where some of the money given to the Rock Springs Foundation has been used to update the facility.
Kiwanis clubs of Kansas now is the time to begin to plan for that weekend. How you say? When you set up your budgets for the 2016-17 Kiwanis year, budget at least $250 but you should budget more. That is the cost of sending one high school student to Key Leader. You ask - but our club cannot find someone to send? Well, your club can help pay for students from other areas of the state that are sending 2, 3, or more to Key Leader. They need the financial help. SO, plan your Kiwanis budget to include Key Leader scholarship.
Linda Keller - District Key Leader Administrator
Builders Club Conference to Be in Hutchinson
Builders Club Logo The Kansas District Builders Club State Conference will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Educational Academy,  800 15th Circle, Hutchinson, KS.

The Conference will be from  9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration cost is $12 per student - no cost for adults . Please bring some prizes for the end-of-the -day drawing. Also, if you would like to participate, please bring some food items for the food bank.

Two contests will be held:

The essay contest will be a 30 minute time period to express your thoughts regarding Builders Club. Students will select one of three topics to write about. (The topics will not be threatening to the students)  .

The oratorical contest will be a 2-4 minute speech (may be and probably should be prepared in advance).  However, students may be impromptu. There will be a penalty for speeches less than two minutes. The topic the each speaker must address is "Why is the Builders Club important to your school? What are some of the ways that the club has served to make your school and community a better place to be."

The Conference Registration Form is available here or on the District Website. For more information about the Conference or suggestions for the food bank, please contact Dick McCall, District Builders Club Administrator.
KI Foundation Needs Club Gifts, Donations
To Fund Numerous Kiwanis Service Activities
KI Foundation Logo
As our Kiwanis fiscal year rapidly comes to a close please check with your club treasurer to make sure that your club has sent its annual club gift to our Kiwanis International Foundation. Many clubs list this gift as a line item on their annual club budget but so often this is overlooked and no check is sent.
With less than one month left in our calendar year over two-thirds of our clubs and many individuals have sent in contributions to support the work of our Foundation. These funds come right back into our communities to help fund the activities of our SLP's (Service Leadership Programs), emergency disaster relief such as the funds used when the Greensburg tornado hit and in grants like the $14,500 grant to the Junction City Club. Without these funds these activities would not be possible.
We talk about improving the life of children and changing the world through our work with Kiwanis International and our clubs. We concentrate on service yet pragmatically we know that a lot of these activities won't occur without proper funding. Our Kiwanis International Foundation is the financial arm of Kiwanis International and needs your support to fund many of these opportunities.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be emailing and phoning many of the clubs that I have not heard from; but as part of the responsibilities of my job as Foundation Chair and not to harass clubs or their members. It is your choice as to whether or not your club chooses to contribute or to decline to contribute. The real question we all have to ask ourselves when we decide to donate is if we as individuals and clubs truly believe in the work our Foundation does. On my end it would help me to know if a donation is forthcoming or if one has been sent in so that I can assure that the club or individual receives the proper credit.
Thank all of you who have contributed and those who will be sending in donations. Please keep in mind that it can sometimes take a bit of time for these donations to show up on my reports from Kiwanis International so if I call you and you have already sent in your contributions just let me know when I call.

Message to Kansas District from Key Club Trustee
Key Club Oval
Greetings, Kansas District!
My name is Nicole Montana, and I am honored to introduce myself as your new International Trustee. This year, I will be serving the Kansas, Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee, and Pacific Northwest Districts, and I feel so lucky to be working with you all in the coming year.

I'm from the New England and Bermuda District, and I'm from Marshfield, Massachusetts, a small beach town just south of Boston, where I'm going into my senior year. I'm on my school's Mock Trial team and am a part of my Drama Club, but when I started high school three years ago, Key Club was the first club I joined.

The time I've spent and the people I've met in Key Club have changed my life and allowed me to meet some of my best friends.  As your International Trustee I'm here to ensure that you can make the most of your time in Key Club.  I'm here to be the link between you and Key Club International, to ensure that you have a voice in our organization, and that you're informed about what's going on at the International level. I hope that during this year, I get to many of you and that you feel comfortable coming to me as both a resource and as a fellow Key Club member.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at anytime by email or at 781-738-8623. I'm also on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, so feel free to add me there as well!

This is going to be an amazing year and I'm so excited to see what we all accomplish!

In friendship and service,

Nicole Montana

International Trustee, Key Club International

Suggestions from Human & Spiritual Values District Chair
Friends in Kansas Kiwanis.
I took particular notice at the recent Kansas Kiwanis Convention, that the prayers were stated in such a way that persons who are non-Christian would have felt included in the prayers. Good Job Kiwanians!
What do I mean? Most clubs open their meetings with prayer. Of course, that is not absolutely necessary. I met a Kiwanian from Orlando, Florida who was a Buddhist, and she said that they opened their meetings with a few moments of silence.
When a new person walks in to visit our clubs, we do not immediately ask their religion (At least, I hope not.) so they may be Jewish or Muslim or some other faith. It is best to have prayers that are not offensive to non-Christians.
Here are some suggestions. Just come to the end of your prayer and say "Amen". One possibility is  "In the name of the Lord I pray."  The operative word is "I" which means it is your prayer, and not the prayer of the whole group. This was the suggestion of a former Kansas Legislature Chaplain. Or you can do what the Manhattan (Evening) Club does; they sing the grace  "Be present at our table, Lord....."
The point is for us to just be sensitive. Follow the example of those who led in prayer at the District Convention.
On another topic, I automatically get the names of members who pass away, but there are others I don't. So members, when a past-member, a member's spouse, or child, or anyone else that would be meaningful to the Kansas Kiwanis District, passes away please let me know.  It would be appropriate to mention them in the memorial service. Contact me at [email protected]. If you write me,  please know we will move about October 1st, so write me at 2121 Meadowlark Road #26. Manhattan, Ks 66502-7508.
