Governor's Message
I-Plan to Be Revealed
At Mid Year Conference
Last November when I attended Governor-Elect training we were introduced to the Kiwanis "I-Plan". This is a strategic plan for Kiwanis, a road map for how to reach goals. We were given Kiwanis International's plan and were told that it would be refined and then the Districts would develop their I-Plans and then the Clubs would develop their I-Plans so that everyone had goals and a method of reaching them.
Eckelman This past December Kiwanis International had myself, the Governor, Cynthia Bender, the Governor-Elect, Jan Maxwell, the Vice Governor, Rusty Thomas, the District Secretary, Ronald Jackson, the Circle K Administrator representing SLPs, Richard Lamon, President of the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation, Rick Dickman, Thomas County, Colby long-term member at large, and Paul Swanson, Topeka Downtown, new member at large, go to Dallas, Texas, where we attended a Regional I-Plan retreat. It was while we were there that we developed the Kansas District I-Plan.
We spent Friday afternoon and evening and all day Saturday working on a road map for Inspiration, Impact, Image, and Investment.
    Inspiration = Membership and Engagement
    Impact = Meaningful Service
    Image = Our Kiwanis Image
    Investment = Financial Viability
We developed strategies for each one and metrics, how we will accomplish the strategies, to reach our goals. The Formula is the big key.
We were drained after Saturday, and waited until January to have a conference call to go over strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, strategies and metrics and refine them. That done, we have an I-Plan for the District, a road map, a plan for action, that is living and can be changed to adjust to different strategies or metrics to guide us to serving our children and communities for years to come. We will present it to the District Board for final tweaking and approval at the Mid Year Conference.
Next October, Kiwanis International is rolling out the I-Plan for Clubs. They will tailor their Plans to fit their needs. Kiwanians will know from International, their District and their Clubs what each one's  goals are and how they will be achieved. More will be coming at District and Mid Year Conventions.
Winter has been trying to make its presence and I am sure we will have a few more weeks of colder weather causing us to stay indoors. But nothing like a good old Kiwanis Mid Year to cure the "Cabin Fever" come March 5 in Manhattan. Come a day early and do service projects with Circle K. See you there.

Governor Warren Eckleman
District Secretary Notes:
Busy Start to the New Year Planning
Conventions, I-Plan, Building New Club
Rusty Mugshot
Four months into this Kiwanis year and what a whirlwind it has been. Planning district events and meetings, traveling to Dallas for I-Plan discussions and planning, working with a dedicated Kiwanis team to open a new club in Wamego, and off to Toronto to prepare for this summer's Kiwanis International Convention.
More about the I-Plan can be found in the Governor's remarks and at the Mid Year Conference in March, in Manhattan. Registration for the Toronto 100th Anniversary Celebration and Kiwanis International Convention - June 23 through 26 - will be available very soon. Watch your email for the launch. Airfares are very reasonable and the Canadian dollar has currently dropped below the U.S. dollar. Remember, a passport is required for entry. Clubs should have money set aside in their Administrative Budget to help with some expenses.
Two housekeeping items: first, the 990 IRS form is due by February 15th and is filled out online. And, second, the club's Incorporation Report is due with the Secretary of State, also online.
While in Toronto for the District Secretaries meeting, there will be discussion about the new Monthly Report form. I have listened to all of your comments, concerns and frustrations; they will be addressed at this meeting.
Mid Year is the first weekend in March. If you are planning to stay at the Four Points by Sheraton, please note that their cutoff date for the "Kiwanis Rate" is February 5. The hotel provides a complimentary breakfast for their guests and their recent renovations make it a great place to stay.
For the second year, Kansas CKI will have their DCON alongside our Mid Year. Friday night's ticketed event "Dinner and Service with IMPACT!" is hosted and planned by the Kansas District of Circle K. Please join us for a delicious meal and a fun program of hands-on service.
Saturday is an excellent opportunity to hear how to grow your club's membership using The Formula. Kiwanis International Regional Director Brad Boyd will be on hand to give you tips and ideas and motivation on how to effectively use The Formula for success. All District and International awards will be presented during Saturday's luncheon. Don't forget to bring your donations for the YCPO project which is covered elsewhere in the Kiwanian. Please register early to save money and be prepared for a great time in Manhattan. We look forward to seeing you in March!
Yours in Kiwanis Service,

Kiwanis International Approves District Bylaws
The Kansas District Bylaws that passed unanimously at the District Convention House of Delegates meeting on July 31, 2015, were then submitted to Kiwanis International. After review, Kiwanis International has approved the Kansas District Standard Form for Bylaws without any recommended changes.
Each Kansas Kiwanian is encouraged to read the  Bylaws as there many changes. For your convenience the Bylaws will be posted to the Kansas District website under the Resources tab. In addition, Kiwanians are encouraged to read the District Policies and Procedures (P&P), which supplement the Bylaws.  The P&P are also posted on the District Website.
The District Bylaws and P&P provide guidance for the District Officers, Board, committees, clubs and each Kiwanian for the successful operation of the Kansas District.

Ken Kern, Chair - Resolutions & Bylaws Committee
Mid Year to Feature IMPACT Service with CKI!
Happy New Year Everyone!  As the New Year rolls in it is time for excitement and opportunities!  I'm challenging each and every Kiwanis member to attend the Mid Year Conference in March in Manhattan. It is going to be one the most exciting ones we have had.
The reason for all the excitement is we are holding our conference jointly with the Kansas District of Circle K. I am looking forward to our service project on Friday evening - "Service with an IMPACT!  Impact is one of the four parts of the I-Plan that the Kansas District will be implementing this coming October.
The plans we have made for Friday evening will give you the opportunity to learn about one part of the I-Plan early. We will be working on six service projects that evening and with Kiwanis and Circle K members participating we will be able to have a BIG Impact in our communities! The service projects will be awesome, but the fun will be working with our CKI family of college students!
After we have completed our service projects we are going to play human Foosball. There's sure to be lots of excitement. If some of you prefer not to play Foosball we will still need cheerleaders.
Kiwanis members that have never attended a conference are missing out on opportunities to bring more about Kiwanis back to your communities. Please make the pledge and join us March 4th and 5th. You will have a fantastic time doing service projects, playing games, meeting new people and most important of all - having FUN!
Yours in Kiwanis service,
Cynthia Bender - Governor-Elect
Be Proud and Build on the Heritage of Kiwanis
As I have started serving our wonderful district of Kiwanis, I have found that 100 years of Kiwanis brings benefits that we may not fully appreciate. The good works of those who have gone before provide us with a positive reputation and foundation to build upon.
This fall I had the good fortune of being present when the Tecumseh club inducted six new members. Each new member had a Kiwanis connection. Recently, as I stood in line to pay for my meal at my club, the gentleman in front of me was looking in the room where we meet  with our banners hanging. He recognized our speaker. I invited him to come to lunch with us anytime. It turns out, he is a former Kiwanian who will be visiting our club soon.
Be proud of Kiwanis and the contributions that your club makes to the your community, children of your community, Kansas and the world. Strike up a conversation about Kiwanis and invite others to join you in everything Kiwanis has come to mean to you!!!!
With thanks for all you do and proud to be your Vice Governor.
Jan Maxwell - Vice Governor
You Can Help Keep District Finances Strong!
D Hurrelbrink
When we speak of "More Hands for Doing What We Do Best," we immediately and correctly think of service. However, more hands - that is more members - also make for a more viable and financially strong Kansas District.
As the chair of the budget committee, it is my duty to inform you of the results of the recent meeting. As you may know, the reserve fund held by the District has been declining over the last several years. If this trend continues, the District will essentially be broke.
So, the decision was made to try to increase the amount the District holds as a reserve. Additional steps to reduce travel expenditures were considered as well. Yes, the time is now for some serious belt tightening at the District level.
But, there is something else we all can do to help this situation. As you probably know, the main source of revenue for the District is membership dues; and I am sure you all know membership has been declining for several years. The one thing we all can do to help this situation is to invite someone to join Kiwanis. As our numbers grow, our money problems shrink; it is that simple.
For many years now, all the District leadership has been preaching growth, membership increase, The Formula, or whatever the current iteration may be called. But, it all boils down to the same thing: THE KANSAS DISTRICT NEEDS MORE MEMBERS!!!!!!
You can help! You can begin the process of recruiting a few new members for YOUR club. You can get involved in the formation of a new  club in your division. You could form a satellite club to an existing club. You can simply invite someone to your club meeting. Nothing rocket science here folks. Simple as asking someone to come and help us serve the children of the world.
David Hurrelbrink - Immediate Past Governor
Clubs Must Review Kiwanis Youth Protection Guidelines with Their Members Once Per Year
All Kiwanis clubs need to be following the Youth Protection Guidelines provided by Kiwanis International and review these guidelines with club members once per year. These guidelines have recently been updated with revisions that became effective on October 1, 2015. The revised guidelines can be found at www.kiwanis.org/youthprotection.
The main two updates in the revision include:
  1. Advisors shall acquire a new background check upon their initial appointment to the position. SLP (Service Leadership Program) clubs that petition to charter will only be approved with indication on the petition form that the Kiwanis advisor has a criminal history background check.
  2. All district chairpersons and their assistants for all Service Leadership Programs are required to have a clear criminal background check conducted and verified by Kiwanis International.
As Chair of the Youth Protection program in Kansas, I am happy to present a program to your club if my schedule permits but any club officer can download the PowerPoint presentation provided by Kiwanis International to share at a club meeting. The current guidelines should be printed and distributed to club members as well. These resources, in addition to others, can be found online at the link provided above.
A report not provided on the Kiwanis International link but one that I have shows which clubs in Kansas have completed the mandatory training for this current Kiwanis year. There are too many clubs that have indicated they have not had training and for some, I know this is incorrect data. Club secretaries need to put a "check mark" on their monthly report when asked if the club has had training and if your club does not have a club secretary, a club officer should be fulfilling these duties and completing the monthly reports. Many clubs did the training during Youth Protection week in September and that should have been reported on the October report or any of the following reports since October.
I will be sharing this report on club training with the Lt. Governors so if your club has not had the mandatory training yet this year or has not reported it, please expect to hear from your fabulous division Lt. Governor. Club officers can contact me for this information as well via email at [email protected] or by phone at 785-623-8506.
My sincere thanks to those clubs that have conducted the mandatory training and to those club secretaries who have reported it. Please remember we are not only keeping the youth and adults with special needs safe but we are keeping our club members and Kiwanis safe by knowing and following the guidelines.
Mary Hammond - District Youth Protection Chair
Drive to Meet Rock Springs Goal Continues
The Kansas District of Kiwanis project to raise $250,000 for the renovation of the lower level of Heritage Hall at Rock Springs 4-H Camp near Junction City continues. The goal for Eliminate appears to have been met in Kansas and we have a great start on our goal for Rock Springs but more work is ahead. As I write this, we have between $15,000 and $20,000 to give to the 4-H Foundation at Mid Year in Manhattan, but we would like to double that.
Many clubs and individuals have made pledges and payments since last we met but one individual in particular stands out and needs to be thanked. Over the holidays, Chuck Weber of the Shawnee Club completed payment of his $5,000 pledge to Rock Springs. Thank you so much Chuck for your support of Rock Springs.
We can't each make that kind of pledge but each club and individual could send a check this year for Rock Springs. My club (Kansas City West) has paid its pledge of $6,000 but we continue to have projects with a portion of the funds raised going to Rock Springs.
Remember to make out checks payable to the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation and thus they are tax deductible. Please send them through me for accounting purposes: Marc Potter, 401 N 134th St., Bonner Springs, KS 66012-9106. Please, as the saying goes, give early and give often.
Marc Potter - Rock Springs District Project Co-Chair
A 'Hectic' and Merry Christmas for Eliminate
Dot Leakey
The month of December was like being in a snowball fight. The whole month was one of excitement, ups and downs, blessings, saints, personal holiday gifts, and more prayers. It was a month of trick or treat donations due December 31st, year end last minute tax donations, personal holiday gift giving, and deadline for the official completion of the Eliminate Project Campaign.
The District was under a lot of pressure to complete its projected goal by December 31st. On November 8th we had raised a total of $830,000 of our $844,000 goal. By  December 16th we were at $839,292. Earlier the Overland Park Kiwanis Club helped answer our prayers by pledging to be our 29th  Model Club and save over 5,000 more lives. We knew we were getting very close to our District goal.
All eyes were on the Kansas District as it was looking like we would be the second district in the world and first among the U.S. Districts  to finish its District Goal by December 31st. At the beginning of December we still had around $4,000 to raise.
The snowballs began to fly as Kiwanis members began calling in to see how they could help. Club Challenges were made, anonymous donations came in, trick or treat mailings appeared from the Service Leadership Programs, a  last minute Centennial was ordered and a few Zeller pledges made. It made me a strong believer that this is what worldwide Kiwanis is all about.
Working together to SAVE THE BABIES. Making a huge impact and history.
We are still on pins and needles as Kiwanis International Foundation was on holiday break until this past week so the final totals are not yet verified. I cannot thank everyone enough for all their help in getting so far and making our District one of the best in the world. So far our District alone has saved over 466,292 lives and that number continues to rise.
I cannot thank the Kansas District members and our strong leadership enough for being so gracious and caring. You have definitely made me a better person allowing me to help with this wonderful humanitarian project. The last five years have been a true blessing.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
Dot Leakey - The Eliminate Project District Chair
A Special 'Thank You' to 29 Model Clubs

The Eliminate Project Team and the Kansas District would like to personally thank the 29 Clubs and their members whom made the special efforts to support this second Kiwanis World Wide Service Project. Without them the Kansas District would not be making history at this point of time in 2015. They kept our District afloat in its journey to help Kiwanis to eliminate TETANUS in the world. Their unfilled pledges will continue to show our passion, enthusiasm   and commitment for the next couple of years to help our Kiwanis International meet the promised  goal of $110 million.
The year of 2016 will be an important year as Kiwanis International will encourage clubs to complete their committed pledges. Our District members will need to continue to support their fundraising efforts to assist and aid these 29 Model clubs in making their pledges. We  cannot thank them enough for where we are not and we need to support them as they complete their commitments. Kenton Krehbiel - Secretary-Treasurer - Kansas Kiwanis Foundation
Congratulations to Donors to KI Foundation
KI Foundation Logo
I would like to personally thank all of the clubs and individual Kiwanis members throughout Kansas who generously donated and helped to build our Kiwanis International Foundation this past year. With over two-thirds of the clubs making donations the Kansas District was responsible for donating over $15,000 to our Kiwanis International Foundation. These funds will help to support Kiwanis Youth Services, club grants and emergency disaster relief this current Kiwanis year.
The top Districts in per-capita giving this this past year were as follows:
  • Japan                                      $11.25 per-capita
  • Southwest                               $10.44 per-capita
  • New Jersey                             $ 8.03 per-capita
  • Michigan                                  $7.67 per-capita
  • Nebraska/Iowa                        $7.60 per-capita
  • Minnesota/Dakota                   $7.38 per-capita
  • Kansas                                    $7.34 per-capita
The top clubs in per-capita giving in the Kansas District were as follows:
  • Liberal Early Risers                $61.11 per-member
  • Olathe Sunrise Kiwanis          $52.86 per-member
  • Hutchinson                             $26.67 per-member
  • Lawrence                                $18.00 per-member
  • Junction City South                $18.00 per-member
Congratulations to these districts and clubs for their benevolence and generosity this past year. In addition to the generous donations received for annual club gifts to our Foundation, clubs in our District equally generously reached deep inside their pockets in support of our Kiwanis International Eliminate project. Through these donations and our partnership with UNICEF we are well on our way to elimination this deadly disease. Over the past couple of decades we as an organization have passed through close to $300 million to help eliminate Iodine Deficiency, the leading cause of mental retardation in children, and to help eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus.
It is now our time to grow the funds in our Foundation to be used perpetually. Our Foundation currently holds assets of approximately $16 million of which we use 4 per-cent per year to fund our projects. Think of all that we could do each year to help our clubs and youth services if we were to grow that amount.
That being said I would like to ask a favor of all the clubs in the District. It would make my job as District Foundation Chair a lot easier if each club President or Secretary could let me know what I might expect as a donation from your club this Kiwanis year and when I might expect to receive it. We are all fellow Kiwanis members and I love chatting about Kiwanis but we all have time restraints and this would help me avoid making unnecessary time-consuming telephone calls. I am also aware that many clubs have already sent in their annual club gifts when they paid their dues but this information is not yet available from Kiwanis International.
In addition I would love to see more clubs honor their members with Hixsons and Tablets of Honor as well as promoting individual club member donations. If two members from each club were to donate $25 each this would increase our District annual club gift to the International Foundation by over $4,000. This would have returned five $2,000 college scholarships to young adults in our District this past year.  If any club would like me to come and do a program at their club meeting on the International Foundation I can be contacted by email at [email protected].
Thank You,
Bill Donegan - KI Foundation District Chair

Help Make 2016 Key Leader A Success
Key Leader
What is Key Leader?
Key Leader Camp is a three-day event where students make new friends, learn communication and leadership skills through a series of group events, small break out groups and a ropes challenge course. The program is centered on five key principles:  Personal Integrity, Personal growth, Respect, Building Community, and Pursuit of Excellence. Since 2005 there have been over 26,973 Key Leader Graduates at nearly 533 conferences. Graduating 8th graders through graduating seniors are eligible. Over a Key Leader weekend, the young person grows as a leader and as a person. During that time, new friends are made.
The date for the 2016 Kansas District Key Leader weekend is June 2-4 at Rock Springs. We have excellent facilities at Rock Springs for Key Leader. Kiwanis clubs of Kansas hopefully have already started planning for that weekend by budgeting at least $250 (or more) for Key Leader. That is the cost of sending one high school student to Key Leader.
And start contacting your local schools for a student or students to sponsor. Speak to your Key Club if you sponsor one. Here's a copy of the flyer for this year's Key Leader. Print out copies to distribute.
If your club cannot find a student to sponsor, you can help pay for students from other areas of the state that are sending two, three, or more to Key Leader. They need the financial help. One way or another you can help make it possible for a student to experience this great weekend.
Linda Keller - District Key Leader Chair

See You in Toronto!
Thousands of Kiwanians and their guests celebrated 100 years of Kiwanis this past June in Indianapolis. In Toronto, we'll celebrate a centennial again. Join us for the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis in Canada. We're already planning a big celebration. See more on the Convention Home Page.

Are You Sending Your Club Newsletters to Pat?
Extra, extra read all about it!  Unfortunately, I am not able to read all about our Kiwanis clubs in Kansas because I am not receiving newsletters from all the clubs.  Right now I receive newsletters from Pittsburg Sunflower, Lindsborg, KCK West and Edwardsville.  I know there are others out there.  If your club would like to be included for an award from the District, please email them to [email protected]

Old Mission Club, Shawnee Community Mourn Loss of Amazing Kiwanian
(Editor's Note) Anyone who knew Evelyn VanKempseke could not help but love and admire this wonderful, giving woman. I'm taking the liberty to include two feature-length newspaper stories that appeared following her recent death - one in the local Shawnee Dispatch and the other in the Kansas City Star. Read through them and you will agree she lived the spirit of Kiwanis!

Kiwanian Delivered Via Email or On the District Website
The Kansas District is no longer printing and mailing hard copies of the Kansas Kiwanian. The District newsletter is now emailed to all members for whom we have email addresses. If you have club members who are not receiving the Kiwanian, please ask them to send their email address to the Kiwanian editor at the email address below. The newsletter is also posted to the Kansas District website under the News tab. We are asking club secretaries (and members) who have access to email or the internet to print out hard copies for members who do not have electronic access.
