HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The holidays are over and it is a new year. I wish you all the very best in the year to come. I pray for health, happiness and quality time with friends and family. I also pray for more responsible pet guardians and less pets needing rescue. I don't know about you but I was ready to ring out 2013 and ring in the New Year. Last year was a tough one for rescue. We took in over 200 pugs, many of who had extreme health issues not to mention extreme vet bills. Our rescue would not have survived had it not been for our wonderful supporters, volunteers and friends. You are the ones that keep us going and I can't thank you enough for always being there for us.
With that said, we are faced with a huge undertaking. We seem to have started off the year with a bang. A rescue friend answered an ad for two free pugs. A breeder was closing his facility, selling thirteen pugs and giving away two seven year olds. What started out as two pugs has turned into twenty one! In addition to the thirteen advertised, there were six older pugs that were going to be given away. One sweet pug is ten years old and just had a baby. All were living outside and three are pregnant. We couldn't get these babies out of our minds and knew we had to help them.
A wonderful family got them all to saftey and now the real challenge begins. We took in 21 pugs, and when the babies come, we likely will have saved over thirty. Pughearts of Houston took six but with the babies coming we will still have at least 22 new pugs that need vetting, supplies, and foster homes. Two years ago we took in 32, and had to scramble for foster homes and funds to vet them all. We are in the same boat now. Each healthy pug will cost a minimum of $200 to vet, and the pregnant ones, babies, or sick ones will cost much more. The two girls we brought in first had bad upper respiratory infections and had to visit the emergency vet the first night.
If you are able to make a monetary donation just go to our website at www.homewardboundpugs.com and click the Donate Online button, or email me at homewardboundpugs@cox.net for an address to send a check. No amount is too small. I know that after the holidays funds are low but if everyone reading this just sent $5 that would amount to several thousand dollars. We have also set up an Amazon wish list under Homeward Bound 2014 breeder release for much needed items. You can access it quickly by going to our website and clicking on Amazon Wish List. With so many coming in at once there is always a need for new supplies for the pugs and cleaning supplies to help keep germs to a minimum. Also, please share this information with your family and friends. We will be updating our Facebook page regularly to keep you informed of their progress!
If you are close by and would like to drop off any items, A1 Pet Emporium on the corner of Britton and May in OKC will gladly accept them. They also have the food we requested on our wish list and many other items we need. We can also use bleach, Tide HE, and Lemon Pinesol.
As you can imagine we need additional foster homes so each pug has a place to go until adopted. If you have ever thought of fostering, now is the time to give it a try. Please complete the short foster form on our website and we will process it quickly. Our web address is www.homewardboundpugs.com. If you have adopted from us, you are automatically approved to foster.
Pug people are the greatest and I know somehow we will get through this. What a way to start the year, helping 21 sweet pugs get the life they so deserve. You can make a difference in the lives of these little orphans. Please help if you can.
