Christmas Wish List This is the time of year where pugs are falling out of the sky like snow and we are scrambling to find foster homes so we too can enjoy the holidays with family. This week alone we are taking in seven pugs who need vetting and foster care. We know money is tight, but please consider a donation to help the pugs get necessary vet work while waiting for their forever home. We still have several waiting for heartworm treatment and knee surgeries. As always we appreciate any and all contributions.Temporary Foster Homes Needed
We need more volunteers to foster a pug from Dec 20 through the 28th. If you are interested, please fill out this form.
Amazon Wish List
Homeward Bound Pug Rescue has a Christmas wish list on Amazon. There are lots of little stuffed toys, treats and soft beds for our puggies in rescue. Many of these darling pugs have lived lives without toys, treats or a comfy place to rest their heads. They really need something to call their own to comfort them. Some of these items are less than $4, so please take a look at the list and open your heart to our Pugs. Any items purchased will ship directly to Gail. Thank you so much! |

Happy Tails
Jacob
My name is Heather Bottoms. I came to be involved with HBPR as a foster home volunteer for a fantastic dog, Flo. I knew fostering would be a niche fit for our family as my oldest son, by nature of his diagnosis, forms almost no significant attachment to people, places or animals. My youngest son loved the idea of a new playmate every so often and while my husband is an over the road truck driver, fostering would give us a sense of unity and purpose. Once Flo left our home we agreed to foster another pug, Jacob.
Jacob was the exact polar opposite of Flo. Jacob was introverted, scared and unable to believe that someone would love him and not hurt him as had transpired in his short, checkered path to HBPR. The day we picked Jacob up he rode the 30 minute trip sitting on my oldest son, Thad's, lap. While Thad focused on his video game, Jacob tried to be as invisible as possible. You see, Thad while mainstream functioning, has attachment issues and poor social skills, he simply has a difficult time reading and interpreting the emotions of those around him.
As we arrived home, Thad announced that he was going to take Jacob to his room for peace and quiet from our 2 pugs and Chihuahua that are exceptionally friendly and playful. Jacob was visibly relieved to be in Thad's room and even enjoyed Thad's cat, Bernadine. This became the normal, Jacob with Thad and Bernie, the 3 amigos. When I struggled to get Jacob to eat, Thad succeeded where I failed, when I struggled to bring Jacob out of his emotionally shut down shell, Thad succeeded. It was simply instinct for Thad to read this dog and his needs. He simply understood what it was to feel like Jacob, different.
Finally Jacob's health, attitude and verve for life returned and we determined his readiness for adoption. As a family we attended Puggerfest with Jacob to meet perspective adopters. That day Jacob worked his special, quiet, unobtrusive magic and wowed himself an adoptive family. That week, I explained to the boys Jacob would be leaving for his "fureva" home and soon we would have a new foster pug. Thad was devastated by the news of Jacob leaving. This was a reaction I never expected from him and his attachment, or lack thereof, issues.
A few days later the family got in the car to deliver Jacob to his new family. In route to drop him off the most amazing call came, Gail had contacted his potential adoptive mom and she agreed to allow Thad and Jacob to stay together. So at the Loves gas station it was determined we would have a new family member.
Jacob and Thad are inseparable, they play together, eat together, talk, sleep and pretty much lift each other up on a daily basis. It is quite a sight in the morning, Thad with a cat on his head and a pug draped over his lap. Jacob still has moments of introverted behavior and he is still quirky about eating his kibble and playing with other dogs, but the pug he is today is comfortable in his own skin, healthy and confident he is loved and deserves love from his boy Thad.
I cannot begin to say how grateful I am that this special little pug came into our life. Without even knowing it Thad & Jacob have healed parts of each other. To have the privilege to see them together is to understand love and friendship is simply unconditional acceptance of exactly who you are at that time without further expectation. While I no longer foster, as more pugs is not an option, lol, I am forever in debt to HBPR, Gail and a potential adopter willing to allow a little boy to have a best friend. If you have the opportunity, foster, it is beyond reward and if you can adopt, I promise the love that grows giving these dogs a new life is immeasurable, yet visibly seen by all that encounter them. Take a chance, you will not be disappointed and a pug will have a new lease on life.
