Holiday Wish List
Apparently people must think that we want pugs for Christmas, because they sure do give us a lot of them this time of year! For some people money gets tight and they would rather get their kids a new X-box than take care of their pug's medical issues, or they want to go on vacation and decide now is as good a time as any to get rid of their unwanted pug.
Because of the large influx of pugs, we updated our Amazon wish list for the holidays. Things like toys may seem frivolous, but it is important to give our new fur friends something they can call their own when they first arrive. Dog beds and dog food are always in demand too. We also need things like Pill Pockets so that we can give them their medication without having them spit it out in disgust.
Some of these items are less than $5 each, so please consider making a holiday donation.
Thank you so much!

Temporary Foster Homes Needed
Gail is asking for help once again during the holiday season to temporarily foster a homeless pug. In order for her to be able to spend time with family, she need coverage for the following dates:
November 11-19 (the week before Thanksgiving)
December 22-29 I know this is a tough one but without your help Gail can't spend Christmas with her son.
You have helped her out in the past, and we are hoping to find enough temporary homes during these times. It means so much for Gail to be able to get away for a short time. Gail is the backbone of the rescue, and Homeward Bound would not exist without her. Please consider taking a pug for a few days so that she can spend some much needed time with her family!

Beauty
In September we rescued Beauty from an abandoned home. She had been left alone for three weeks with only a bag of dog food and filthy bowl of water. We took her straight to the vet and began treatment of one of the most terrible cases of mange we have ever seen.
Today Beauty is doing very well in her foster home. As you can see, her hair is growing back, though it will be some time before her coat completely fills in. Her foster mom says she is feeling so much better and is enjoying being pampered. We give heartfelt thanks to everyone for your donations and support. We couldn't do it without you!

Heartwarming Videos
 | Fiona: Blind dog rescued from trash bin |
Fiona was found abandoned, living next to a trash bin. Her rescuers from Hope For Paws quickly realized that the terrified dog was blind. After she was cleaned up, they took her to the vet for a checkup and he said that the vision in one eye could be saved. Hundreds of people donated towards her surgery and she now has vision in her right eye. As you can see in the video below, Fiona is healthy now and enjoying the life she has always deserved.

Pug Of The Month
Hope
Before After Hope was found in a shelter about to be euthanized. She had a terrible skin condition and was very thin. Now she is recovering in a loving foster home. This is a message from Hope's new foster family: "Hey everyone, Hope is such a sweetie. She is still thin, but she actually has a huge appetite now. She has energy and given some more time she will be looking better than ever :) She is a very happy girl for all she has been through."
Hope still has some weight to gain and needs to recover from her spay, but she will be ready for adoption in a few weeks. Hope is a beautiful, sweet girl and will make a great companion for some lucky family. If you are interested in adopting her, please fill out an application. You can also make a donation towards her medical bills by clicking the gold "Donate Online" button on our website.

Rainbow Bridge
Tipton
The moment I saw his photo on Homeward Bound's website it was love at first sight. There he was, Tipton, an older pug with a concerned look on his face and funny head tilt (photo on the left). What a cute photo it was. His bio said that he was returned to rescue when the family had a baby. But, despite being abandoned by his first adoptive family, he was a sweet, happy, calm boy. A PERFECT fit for me! I was so excited, that right after I filled out my application I emailed to see how long it would take to hear back from someone. Well, Gail answered right back and said, "My adoption coordinator is trying to call you now!" and sure enough, in about 30 seconds the phone rang. After I got to know Gail as a friend, she told me why they called back so quickly. Apparently because Tipton was an older, deaf pug he had been with the rescue for a long time and had been sent to Gail's house, the house where all the "unadoptable" pugs go. Needless to say, Gail was thrilled that someone was interested in Tipton and they wanted to call me quickly before I changed my mind. Haha! On March 10th, 2007, my daughter and I finally met Tipton and his foster mama Gail. Tipton was looking very worried and Gail was decked out head to toe in all things pug. What a pair they were! I liked them both immediately. The ride back to Dallas seemed like it took forever, I just wanted to get him HOME. As soon as Tipton walked inside the house he ran happily from room to room checking everything out. He knew he was in his forever home! Tipton was just the perfect pug, and very unique too. Because he was deaf, he had a funny scream when he was hungry or when he needed help off the bed. He was very loyal and followed me everywhere, so much so that I ended up adopting another pug so my daughter would have a dog to play with. All Tipton wanted to do was lay beside me, eat and take short walks to pee on every single gosh darn bush and tree. Towards the end of his life he couldn't walk far, but he sure did love his stroller. He also loved going to the Starbucks drive thru and getting a Puppyccino, a little cup of whipped cream. He would make the biggest mess and have more whipped cream on the car seat and on his face than in his tummy (photo on the right). I had him for 5 1/2 wonderful years. His life was cut short by a pancreatic tumor. There was no treatment and he was going downhill very fast. Casey and I held him gently and said our tearful goodbyes on October 16th, 2012. We were heartbroken, but knew that it was for the best. I am forever grateful to Gail for allowing me to adopt Tipton. He was the best dog I could have ever hoped for. He may not have been a perfect pug, but he was the perfect pug for me. I love you and miss you so very, very much my little ol' man. Liz |
Happy Tails
Junior and Bou We just wanted you all to know that we are having a great time in Kansas. I (Junior) celebrated my 2nd year anniversary on April 29th. I am a pug that approaches anyone for a scratch...because who wouldn't want to scratch me? I have gained some but it only adds to my charm. I like it here in Kansas; I have a dog door, a big back yard and my own cushion to relax on the deck. I have two sets of steps to the furniture and a lovely morning walk every day. I sleep between my folks every night. I get treats and all the attention I so richly deserve! Bou, just completed her 1st year on August 11th. She is still a bit timid but has two loves in her life: Mama and me. Though she is growing rather fond of her Dadad. Of course, I shouldn't leave out food...food may be her first love, actually. She is housetrained, with only the rare accident every now and then. She has come a long way in a year. When she got here she wouldn't get on the furniture or come to anyone. She ducked her little head when petted and skittered away; a scared little rabbit. Now she does her best to take up half of the couch, loves cuddling her people and is slowly inching her way up to the head of the bed, as we sleep. Bou is still leery of strangers but lately she is started to warm up to those she's familiar with and she has started barking at strangers who come to the front door. She played with a toy for the first time the other day; she has been playing with blankets and pillows for a while now. Mama loves that and laughs and carries on. I say big deal; I have been playing with my pillow for years. I get annoyed and don't always want to share the attention but nobody better even try to bother her, I've got that big brother thing going on. I am, after all, the King of Dogs and it is not wise to mess with the King. Mama sends her many thanks and appreciations for allowing the two of us to come to Kansas and share her life. We are ALL, ever and always grateful to Homeward Bound Pug Rescue. Junior and Darla Brown
