Foster Homes Needed

Temporary foster homes

Gail is asking for help once again during the holiday season to temporarily foster a homeless pug. In order for her to be able to spend time with family, she need coverage for the following dates:

November 11-19 (the week before Thanksgiving)

December 22-29 I know this is a tough one but without your help Gail can't spend Christmas with her son

You have helped her out in the past, and we are hoping to find enough temporary homes during these times. It means so much for Gail to be able to get away for a short time. Gail is the backbone of the rescue, and Homeward Bound would not exist without her. Please consider taking a pug for a few days so that she can spend some much needed time with her family!

Foster Homes
We have
begged and begged but we are still falling short on foster homes. Homeward Bound will have to close its doors to new pugs if we don't get some relief.  We simply cannot help any more pugs without foster homes. We have five at the vet right now with no where to go and although some can be boarded, it is not a good situation and an expensive one. Gail has decided it is just not fair to continue taking in pugs under the current circumstances. Donations and foster homes are what keep us going. Please consider opening your heart and home to a homeless pug. The rewards of doing so will far outweigh any hardship involved. Please fill out a foster application today. You will literally be saving a life!

Happy Howl-O-Ween!

Halloween is right around the corner and no doubt your pugs are ready for their treats! In order for things to go safely and smoothly, make sure that you keep them on a leash if you take them trick-or-treating with you. Also, if they are going to help you pass out candy, make sure you have a baby gate up at the door so they don't run off during all the excitement.

Ellie Martens is the cutest witch around!

Tipton Lummus has a sloth buddy to take trick-or-treating with him

Diane's pug Stormy is quite the little devil!

Bruce Lyons is looking very handsome indeed

The newly adopted Esther Black is sitting pretty in her "Beauty School Drop Out" dress.

Letter from the Director

Hello Everyone,

The dust has cleared, the rain has stopped and Puggerfest is once again behind us. Although the weather gods didn't comply as much as we would have liked, it could have been much worse. While other parts of the city were getting down pours, we were getting spit on off and on and by the end of the day a fine mist was falling. Even though we were all soggy messes by the close of the day, Puggerfest was a success!! We made almost enough to pay off all our bills and will be getting much needed heartworm treatments and knee surgeries in the next few weeks. Thank you all so much for coming out despite the rain. We hope you had as much fun as we did! We are already preparing for and looking forward to next year.

I also want to thank all of the volunteers for making Puggerfest happen and be as successful as it was. Many volunteers put in countless hours before, during and after the event was over. I can't thank you enough for your dedication and support. Without you, we would not have such an awesome event and the rescue is truly blessed to have you. When I got to the park I just stood in the middle of the pavillion for a minute to take it all in. People were scurrying everywhere, unloading vans, trucks and trailers to get things where they need to be, decorating, organizing volunteers, getting tables set up, tents up, pugs secured in their pen and a myriad of other duties with just three and a half hours to get everything done! Yes, many arrive at the crack of dawn and work in the dark until the sun comes up. As I stood there, I reflected briefly on how many people are pulling together to make Puggerfest happen. It was a moment I will hold in my heart forever. Sometimes "Thank You" just doesn't seem enough. But I do thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your efforts and for hanging in there when the weather turned bad.

I want to also thank those of you who sent donations for the silent auction, bought tee shirts, raffle tickets, queen and king tickets, took out ads and sponsored an event. Trevor Harper stepped in at the last minute to MC for us and did a tremendous job. Thank you to our wonderful judges who took the time out of their busy schedules to judge our contests. A special thanks to Pat Becker who not only helped judge, but stood out in the rain to crown our king and queen. You all are appreciated more than you will ever know. The puggies and I thank you for your dedication and support!

Puggerfest Recap

For those of you who couldn't make it to Puggerfest, and for those of you who can't get enough, here are some photos of the big day.

Congratulations to Puggerfest 2012 Queen JuJu and King Noah. They enjoyed their coronation and took home huge prize baskets.

The costumes were outstanding this year!

Our group contest winners were Wendy Black's crew: Bruno the lifeguard, Kirby the surfer, Jitters the shark, and Homeward Bound's own Esther was a hula girl:

Kathleen Hoffman's pug Marty was the winner in the "Best Kisser" category. Just look at him go!

Congratulations to Toby Fenley, winner of the pug races for the THIRD year in a row!

This year's Kid's Zone was so much fun. The kids had a great time playing games, decorating hats and pug bandanas and having their faces painted.

We had more items for auction and more people bidding than ever before.

There was lots of pen jousting going on during the auction, especially during the last few minutes. I was determined to get the basket with the Ugly Pug brand beer and pug beer steins, but apparently someone had a large credit limit, because I was outbid! Noooo! Oh well, maybe whoever won the basket will see this and invite me over for a beer...

Pug in Need

We got a call about this little girl, found in a mobile home in Pryor, OK, while we were all at Puggerfest. Her owners had been gone for three weeks when the neighbor went inside and found this sweet baby. All Beauty had was a big bag of food that was ripped open and a filthy water bowl. We were called and told the pug needed help pronto or she would have to be put to sleep due to her terrible condition. Well, we had to give her a chance and Beauty is not suffering alone anymore. Our vet said she was in really bad shape with sarcoptic mange, which is highly contagious to people and other animals.

As you can see, this poor baby has no hair except for the tip of her tail! Her condition comes from sheer neglect and she must have suffered a long time itching herself raw. Beauty appears young and we are not giving up on her. With lots of meds and TLC we know she will recover completly. Beauty will need a foster as soon as she is non-contagious. We will never understand how people can do this to such a sweet and loving pet who depends on humans to take care of her. If you would like to donate to her care, please go to our website and click on the PayPal button. She will not be ready for adoption for a while, but we are accepting applications now. If you are looking for a sweet, friendly pug, please fill out an application here

Pearl

It's Wendy Kaufert & I have 3 puggers.....Cagney, Pepper & Pearl!!!

I Love them ALL soooooo very much!! Pearl is the one I adopted through your rescue in November 2010. She is doing GREAT!!! She is my biggest snoring Girl and I love that, cuz then I know where she is. She loves to find the wierdest places in the living room to hide and go to sleep. She is my momma in my home!! My whole family loves her soooooo very much! When my brother, Rex comes over to visit you should see how excited they all get...lol Especially Pearl!! He always says he is gonna "kidnap" her and take her home with him.

Puggers & Hugs,
Wendy

Olivia and Oliver

I wanted to send a hello and a big thank you to all of you. We picked up Chip Saturday August the 4th and he became an official Texan at 12:30am. As much as we loved the name, our daughter suggested we call him Oliver, and having an Oreo already, we thought having an Oliver and an Oreo would be adorable. Olivia was adopted during Puggerfest this year! Olivia sleeps on our necks or by our heads. Just too cute. Oreo has taken well to both and they all seem to be enjoying being around each other.

I wanted to thank everyone again. We look at them at can't believe we have two beautiful pug puppies. We feel very appreciative to you for giving us a chance to adopt them. Hoping for long healthy lives.

Lisa, Spencer and Samantha Friedl.
