Jim Davenport, A Friend We Will Miss
The family of Our Daily Bread sends its love and support to Judy Davenport and her family in the loss of her husband, Jim. Hard working and dedicated are just some of the words that describe Jim Davenport.

Chef Liz says of both Jim and Judy, "They have always been there for ODB. If we needed anything all we had to do is ask. Always willing to help volunteering if needed. Beautiful people!!"

Rick Rahn, Grateful for the Opportunity to Serve
A retired engineer who was raised in a small farming town outside of Milwaukee, Rick and his wife were lured to Denton by a 1-year-old grandson. Well, their grandson clearly didn't speak or write at that age, but ODB appreciates his drawing his "Pops" to our community.

Believing in being active and involved, Rick set about to find, in his own words, " People from many faiths and many backgrounds who move hands and feet to make a difference for others."

Being a hands-on "Pops" to now 3 grandchildren in the area, Rick still finds time to pick up food donations for ODB and volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Clearly, community and family are the cornerstone for Jim.
He is certainly a cornerstone for us!

Oscar Ventura, "Everything is God's Work"
Speaking with Oscar is inspiring. His gentle Honduran accent mimics his gentle spirit and deep belief in helping people. In his own words, "It was God's will to bring me to America 46 years ago and become a U.S. citizen in 1975. Coming here has enabled me to help many people. I am just a tool for God's work."

Oscar's work has included sponsoring his parents, brothers, and sisters to come to the U.S. and gain citizenship. He drives and picks up donations weekly for ODB, accompanied by his faithful canine companion, Honey, who gladly accepts pats and treats.

While Oscar insists that "Good things don't come easy", he doesn't just sit idle in his retirement years from IBM and working at West Point Military Academy. In addition to driving to pick up weekly food donations for ODB, he also volunteers for Red Cross

Oscar, you inspire all of us.

It's That Season Again

Liz Dishes
This month, Chef Liz turned the table on ODB Board member Suely Lohr. So we have Suely's recipe for a sugar-free dessert that was a big hit at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

Chocolate Mousse
(low carb and sugar free)

Serves 8 - ½ cup servings
Calories:  227; Fat 23g; Carbohydrates 3g;
net protein 3g

INGREDIENTS - For the pudding
2 Hass ripe avocados
2 tablespoons coconut oil
½ cup premium cocoa powder
¾ cup sweetener (Splenda or Stevia*)
3 tablespoons sugar free chocolate flavored syrup (found in the supermarket coffee section or at World Market)
4 tablespoons heavy cream

FOR THE PUDDING:
Combine all ingredients in a blender or magic bullet and puree until smooth.  Taste and adjust sweetness as necessary.
If using Stevia you may need to add a pinch of salt to compensate for the slightly bitter taste.

FOR THE MOUSSE:
Whip (until stiff) one cup heavy whipping cream with ½ cup stevia or Splenda) and a teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Using a rubber spatula gently fold 1/3 of the whipped cream into the pudding and spread in a dish.  Spread remaining whipped cream on top.  Or you can fold all of the whipped cream into the chocolate pudding.

Volunteer From Home!
Not all of the work done on behalf of Our Daily Bread happens in the kitchen.  On a regular basis, those "invisible little lab rats" are doing things like photographing, documenting, planning, writing, editing, keeping their eyes open for a good story.

A happy barefoot man is resting his feet on a coffee table at home while working on his laptop there is a cat sleeping next to him

If you opt for this gig, you will not be chopping and stirring, but serving those in need and helping your fellow volunteers do their best traveling the maze of a very robust organization.
Sound like your style of volunteering?  Just click here.

We'll be glad you did!
