A Li'l Bit More about Brenda

Executive Director, Brenda Jackson's resume requires a United States map and also reveals her dedication to helping people.

She is originally from New York and worked there, and in Brooklyn, and then made her way to Denton in 2010.  She has lived in big city to small town, and east to west. And she's always worked for the folks who are often the most forgotten and those in need.

Now, as to the inquisitive mind, Brenda has a wide range of skills:
Kindergarten teacher, social worker, foster care supervisor, housing program supervisor, director of family services, Salvation Army Denton-Social Service Program Coordinator- those jobs show the range of Brenda's skills and experiences.

What you see when you look at Brenda is a smile and a warm and ready spirit.  And what you get from being around Brenda is a can-do attitude and a quick mind.

Our Daily Bread is pleased that she calls ODB her work home, or is that home-away-from-home?

Brenda and her dedication, experience,
and passion for our mission are most welcome!
Volunteer Spotlight

Nettie Zehms, a tireless volunteer for 14 years, is the commander of the dessert area on Thursdays. She enjoys being at ODB and says, "It's great to work with others in a soup kitchen."

Chef Liz says that when Nettie arrives at 7:30, she immediately starts rolling silverware, then helps prepare salad, and then readies her dessert area.

Nettie and her husband, Vern, came to Denton in 1986. After retiring, Nettie felt the need to be productive and involved, and she is involved in many activities.  An active, avid quilter with a group at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, she also is involved with Empty Bowls. Both she and Vern also volunteer with Interfaith Ministries.

ODB treasures the example that Nettie sets, and she in turn replies, "I don't know what Denton would do without Our Daily Bread."

Nettie, ODB feels that same way about you!

Heartfelt Thanks

The third annual A Heart for the Hungry Dinner, Dance, and Auction was a toe-tapping time of good fun. Bidding wars on an array of live auction items helped buy meals for the hungry clients of ODB, while the silent auction on remarkable art helped our mission, too.

All of us were touched by the letter our new Executive Director read to us, telling of the gratitude of an anonymous former client who expressed his gratitude for ODB by delivering a large cash donation. Knowing that we helped is more than we expect; knowing that he is doing well is the best thanks ever!

Hope you saw our thank-you ad in the February 28th Denton Record Chronicle.  As you know, we live in a supportive community of businesses and individuals.

Jim Bays Bids Us Bye

Jim and his wife, Sam, are moving from Denton, and we will sorely miss Jim's dedication.

Jim's volunteer work ethic is topped only by his good will and sense of humor. He will always remember meeting Chef Liz for the first time in the kitchen, where she said that hair nets are often required.  Grinning, Jim allowed as how he didn't think it would be a problem for him.

We wish them well, knowing they will enrich their
new community as they have Denton.

Liz Dishes

Liz can dish out a tasty lunch and some great smiles, and here is a hearty chicken main dish recipe:

Chicken Sarasota
(4) 5-ounce chicken breasts, boneless, skinned
11 ounces chicken marinade (recipe follows)
4 slices sugar-cured ham (about 4 ounces)
4 slices mozzarella cheese (about 4 ounces)
1-cup hickory barbecue sauce (recipe follows)

Marinate chicken breasts in chicken marinade for 24 hours.  Remove chicken from marinade and grill on a charcoal grill until cooked (about 5 minutes on each side).

Brush with hickory barbecue sauce while cooking.  After chicken breasts are cooked, but before removing them from the grill, place a slice of ham and cheese on top of each piece of chicken.

Continue cooking just long enough to warm ham and melt cheese.

Serve immediately.

Officer Weber Hits the Beat on the Square

At a recent meeting of the Denton County Homeless Coalition, attended by ODB president Bob Steward and volunteer Communication Chair Sharon Kremer, Denton Police Department Officer Lee Weber announced his new assignment.

Officer Weber's assignment is the Denton Square and he will most certainly bring his love for Denton and its citizens into play. His humor and good spirits are evident in his saying that he will now be "the round guy around the Square."

And, of course, what did your ODB representatives do?
We invited him to lunch, anytime, our treat!

Getting Clipped!!

We all cut corners, but these wonderful hearts cut hair. ODB volunteer Angela Sale Grubbs along with her friends Cathi Collins Carey, Brittany Brown, Keri Daniels and Tiffany Smith gave fresh new cuts to 20 clients!

The first Monday of each month, Angela and other stylists bring their smiles and scissors to ODB. Angela enlists help via the Facebook page, Free Haircuts at Our Daily Bread.  Head to that page here  and be inspired by her before and after pictures.

These Denton stylists know precisely how to bring dignity to people, with the magic of their skills, their scissors, and their dedicated hearts!
