VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

ODB is known in our community for the dedication of its volunteers. And what our volunteers will tell you is that being at ODB enriches their lives.

Mike Famigletti testifies to how much he enjoys ODB, and he enjoys 3 back-to-back shifts each week. Mike is a loyal Monday and Tuesday lunch kitchen volunteer. When we added our Monday night family meal, Mike added that to his calendar.

A native Long Islander, Mike says that when he was working, Sunday often found him a little glum, not eager for the work week to begin. But now he looks forward to the start of the week, and his wife concurs that he is much happier now in the ODB kitchen.

Speaking of kitchens and cooking, Mike is building an outdoor pizza oven so he can make his much-missed New York style pizza.

We at Mike's ODB family are grateful and thankful for his energy, joy, and dedication. And we can't wait to sample some of his pizza!

CHRISTMAS WEEK AT ODB

A lot of HO-HO-HO-ing filled the dining room.....

Don't forget the cookies
and milk, Liz.
Tops on my list, for sure!

Have y'all been good?

Christmas week at ODB lunch had unseasonably warm weather_ but we celebrated
with hats and scarves anyway.

We gave away umbrellas and ponchos
for the rainy days we know will come.

Hmmm, firmer than a
 bowl full of jelly!
Got a Cowboy win in
 your sack, Santa ?
And the weather didn't deter Mike Barrow from warming our spirits with his Santa chuckles and big smile.

More music featured Prentice Barnett on Monday and Maristella Feusstle.

Thanks to all our volunteers who shared their spirits!
HEARTY RECIPE FROM CHEF LIZ

Potato Soup

Hearty enough for a main dish soup.  Complement the creamy mildness by serving with a crisp garden salad and crusty rolls with herbed butter.
 Yields about 10 cups.

6 slices bacon
6 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed (about 6 cups)
2 cups chopped onions
home made potato cucumber soup in a bowl

2/3 cup chopped celery
2 large carrots, chopped
1 cup water
1 ½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
¼ teaspoon pepper
¼ cup flour
4 cups milk
½ pint whipping cream (1 cup)
Snipped chives

  • In large kettle fry bacon until crisp.  Remove bacon; drain, crumble and set aside.
  • Stir potatoes, onions, celery, carrots, water, salt, sugar and pepper into bacon drippings.  Cook, covered, until vegetables are tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Combine flour with 1 cup milk until thoroughly blended.  Add to potato mixture along with remaining milk.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thickened, 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Stir in cream and crumbled bacon; heat through.
  • Garnish with chives.

MORE CONGRATS TO TOM NEWELL and KATHERYN STREAM

While we bid goodbye to Tom and Kathryn from the board of Our Daily Bread, we know their volunteer hearts will keep them around.

Tom Newell and Daniel Sonney are pleased with our new refrigerated truck

ODB is by no means the only organization that has benefitted.  Tom received the Community Leadership Award for his work at Denton Community Food Center at the 14th Annual Hearts and Heroes award banquet, sponsored by Health Services of North Texas this past September. Read the full article here.

Dr. Kathryn Stream was recognized and honored for her work with many universities and hospitals on October 23, 2105, at Each Moment Matters, sponsored by Texas Presbyterian Health Hospital of Denton. The event, held at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, featured Laura Bush as the Keynote speaker.

Tom and Kathryn have left their mark on ODB
and many other agencies and organizations.
We look forward to keeping in touch with them.

FLU PREVENTION

In early November, nurses came to ODB and gave flu shots to all who wanted one.  An ounce, or is that "ouch" of prevention was worth it to many clients!

REPRESENTATIVE MYRA CROWNOVER TAKES THE CAKE

To be accurate, Myra Crownover brought the holiday cake to Our Daily Bread, as is her annual tradition. She spent some time with program coordinators Larry and Melissa and learned about the free haircut event. Representative Crownover has always been a strong supporter of ODB, arranging for pallets of water and other needs, often at a moment's notice. We are indeed grateful for her interest and support.

DRIVERS NEEDED
Because we have such great support from area agencies and grocery stores, we have an increased need for drivers who can pick up items on a regular basis. Drivers do need to be able to lift 50 pounds regularly, have proof of insurance, and a valid driver's license.
