Christmas Week

We will be celebrating with our clients for a week filled with music and special visits.

The generosity of area churches and volunteers supplies our clients with thoughtful items that add some comfort: batteries and small flashlights, puzzle books and pens, hats and scarves, and various travel sizes of hygiene articles.

Special music and events are featured each day of the week, including a visit from Santa.

Many local musicians share their talent this week:
Prentice Barnett starts the week with his delightful piano talents.
A choir from the Denton Senior Center will entertain on Wednesday.
On Thursday Maristella Feusstle and Thad Bonduris strum the holiday to a start on their guitars.

Here are some pictures from last year.

It's the Time of Year to Meet Nick

No, we're not introducing a new Saint Nick, but we most certainly welcome Nick McRae as Assistant to the Chef.

Nick found a welcome home here at ODB when he heard about us from his friend, Mike DeFord. Once Nick started volunteering, he was hooked, and when he heard about the job opening, ODB was happy that he was interested.

Here's a couple of other surprises:  Nick has his bachelors from University of West Georgia (his home state), masters in writing from Ohio State, and  Ph.D in English from UNT.  We are so glad he migrated to Denton.

Keep your ears open for wedding bells in December when Nick is getting married.  Wonder if he'll bake his own cake?

And Czech this out....Nick speaks Czech after spending some time in the Czech Republic.
Volunteer of the Month

ODB has the best volunteers in the state!

Paul Herring, one of our volunteer drivers, stepped up to the plate for us when we needed a Kroger driver. He drives to pick up for ODB two days a week and recruited a friend from his Bible Study class for one of the other days. Paul also volunteers for the Food4Kids program.

Paul found ODB when he got involved in the winter coat program at his church, Argyle United Methodist, which benefits us every winter.

In the words of Rick Holliman," Paul is just an all-round awesome guy".
Brent Farler, Tom Newell, and Kathryn Stream:
Ceaseless Volunteers

Our Daily Bread works because of the dedication of its volunteers and supporters, a remarkable group of hearts, hands, and minds.

The Board of Directors and staff give a hearty round of thankful applause to three board members who are concluding their many years of service. Brent Farler, Tom Newell, and Kathryn Stream served a cumulative span of 17 years for ODB. They ensured the future by conscientiously managing our financial and community resources and enabled us to become a 501c3.

We will miss Brent's clear vision and wise counsel, Tom's lively spirit and ready camera, and Kathryn's steady and focused vision of our mission.

Mobile Food Pantry-Every Second Saturday of the Month

Help Spread the Word about the Mobile Food Pantry to your church, school, and other interested agencies.

On November 14, ODB staff and volunteers helped at the mobile food bank, which is located in the parking lot at 1980 East University. They distributed information about our Monday night meal and helped answer questions and exhibited the warm and friendly spirit that is characteristic of ODB.

Ryan High School Students Had a BLAST

BLAST stands for Building Leadership and Academic Strengths Together, and is a new program to Denton I.S.D, made up of handpicked freshmen and sophomores.
The BLAST students volunteered at Our Daily Bread from November 3 to November 6 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, TX. For many of these students, this was their first time volunteering in the Denton community.

"There are two things I want the students to walk away with, one, 'I will never be in this situation' and two, I want them to have their hearts to be open to serve others," said Rick Holliman, the executive director of Our Daily Bread.

Students were paired with volunteers and helped out in the mailroom, kitchen, hygiene closet and leant a helpful hand around Our Daily Bread. Each student has three to five specialty leadership skills established through the BLAST program and openly communicated their skills with the clients and volunteers of Our Daily Bread.

"It is good to help the community. There are other people out there, not just ourselves," Sophomore BLAST student, Savannah Figueroa said.

Ryan High school teacher Kathryn McCully-Russell intends for the students to use this experience as a way to build confidence in their leadership skills and serve with compassion for others in need in the community around them.

Fresh New Faces on Monday Evening

Our new evening meal continues to grow in popularity, allowing us to reach folks who may not be able to join us at lunch.....because some of them are at school.

As the program becomes more popular, we are joined by families, and the number of meals has increased from around 50 served to over 70.

Thanks go to the volunteers, staff, and supporters who have made
the 6th meal of the week possible.
