15th Anniversary of Serving and.....

600,000th Meal Served

We hope you made it to the lunch-time celebration. We had a ball.

Spontaneous conga line!

In addition to Mayor Pro Tem Dalton Gregory and
Pastor Lisa Patterson of Saint Andrew Presbyterian, we had...
Elvis, yes, THE Elvis!

The generosity of Tarrant Area Food Bank, Walmart, and Target provided a raffle for our clients. Items in the raffle included fans and vaporizers.

Millie Leaves Some Rare Shoes to Fill

How do we summarize the legacy that Millie leaves?

Millie

Manages to address graciously, everyone's concerns

Is ready with a smile

Laughs easily and at just the right moment

Leads by the example of her work ethic

Initiates solutions to problems before they escalate

Embodies strength and integrity

Millie embodies the qualities which bring esteem and strength to our ODB community.

She's efficient, great with details, and respects people. Her wealth of knowledge has been a perfect fit for ODB.

Millie is never too consumed in other matters to immediately and graciously address anyone's concern.

And.....we love her sparkling smile and demeanor.

Millie leaves some very large shoes for ODB to fill.

One of Millie's most admirable qualities is that she always seems to find the time to speak with anyone seeking her ear.  Time and time again ODB clients queue up, seeking a moment with her.  She handles it all with grace, a smile, and a kind word.

Yes, that's some awfully big shoes to fill!

We Can See Clearly Now

Suzanne Fickey of the Denton Women's Golf Association contacted ODB in April to see if we had use for a big-screen TV. It seems one of their members is an employee at Panasonic and could get a 50" TV and wall mount for a discounted price. We excitedly said "Yes, that would be wonderful".

The TV is now mounted in the dining room for all clients and volunteers to enjoy. Since it is USB compatible, we can show the daily announcements, or just enjoy the weather channel or any other program we like.

Computer Upgrades

Mark and Lois Hendricks of Denton generously donated items that make a difference every day to our clients and staff. First, they donated a desktop computer to our clients.

Having access to a third computer means that more clients can:

  • stay in touch with family and friends
  • find housing
  • submit applications for assistance at other agencies
  • apply for jobs
  • send out resumes

The Hendricks also donated a laptop for staff to use on a daily basis.

We are very grateful for these generous donations

that make a difference each day for our clients.

All Hands on Deck, Walls, Closet, and Ramps

In late May, Kenzie Mackey contacted Millie to see if Our Daily Bread had a project for a group of youth called HOBY(Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership). Founded in 1958, HOBY's mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. Learn more here www.hoby.org

Kenzie Mackey found those projects for her group that was housed at UNT for a week-long conference.

The group of 21 energetic young, future leaders helped Mike McPherson and Millie accomplish several projects:

  • Create 2 large banners for June 25th that commemorates our 15 years of service to the hungry, homeless, and poor in our community.
  • Clean out and paint the bell tower closet that ODB will use for storage at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church
  • Assemble  a storage shelf for the freshly-painted bell tower closet
  • Remove old decking on the ramps to the 3 outside storage buildings. Install and paint new decking
  •  Repair the plastic wall molding in the ladies room and the kitchen

These young people, encouraged by 2 leaders, put their backs, hands, and hearts to work, starting at 8:30 and finishing by 1:30.

ODB thanks Kenzie for bringing the energy and dedication

of a fine group of future leaders.

Beignets with Mississippi Blueberry Sauce

Put a Little Blue in Your Red, White, and Blue 4th of July

Beignets are as much a part of our culture as good jazz and serious hurricanes. Beignet comes from the French word for fritter. It's a yeasty, deep-fried type of doughnut, usually served with powdered sugar.

Servings: 6

Blueberry Sauce

Blueberry antioxidant superfood isolated on white

2 pints fresh blueberries

3/4 cup granulated sugar, approximately

1 cup water

Beignet batter:

3 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons baking powder

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 cup water

1 cup milk

1 medium egg, beaten

For cooking and serving:

2 1/2 quarts vegetable oil, for frying

1/3 cup powdered sugar

  1. Combine the blueberries, the 3/4 cup of sugar, and water, puree in a food processor, and pass through a fine sieve. Taste, and add more sugar if necessary. Set aside.
  2. To make the beignets, combine and sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and 1/2 cup of sugar in a large bowl. Combine the water, milk, and egg in a small bowl. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and combine thoroughly.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium-high heat until it reaches 325F on a deep-fry thermometer.
  4. Use 2 teaspoons, one in each hand. Lift a spoonful of batter with one spoon, and push the batter into the hot oil with the other. Fry no more than 10 beignets at a time; crowding the pot will reduce the oil temperature and cause the beignets to be greasy and soggy. Adjust the heat to maintain the temperature at 325F. Fry each batch for 6 to 7 minutes, until golden brown and cooked all the way through. Check for doneness by splitting one open. Drain on a rack or paper towels. Soon after removing the beignets from the oil, place the powdered sugar into a sieve and generously dust the beignets with the sugar.
  5. Ladle equal portions of the blueberry sauce onto each of 6 plates, and arrange 5 beignets around the sauce.
