Monsignor King Outreach Center:

Serving Well on Woodrow Lane

Serving others and thinking of their needs is an area of expertise for Betty Kay and Cathy Brown.  As the Executive Director of the Monsignor King Outreach Center, Betty smiles as she proudly explains the needs of the center and the benefits of the Woodrow Lane location. "We love it here! We're near the Salvation Army, so coordination and communication is quick. Access to us is easy for our clients.  And we have space."

MKOC has needed that space this year especially. The Center opens when the temperature is above 100 or below 32, or for weather warnings that have been so common this spring.

Cathy Brown, dedicated volunteer and board member of MKOC (also a dedicated, long-time volunteer for Our Daily Bread) agrees that the current location is working out nicely but articulates some needs: precooked meals are essential as cooking is not allowed at the Center, twin-sized bedding and fleece-like blankets, paper goods and tall-sized kitchen bags.

Both women ask for prayers,
as well as donations and volunteers for MKOC.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

If you have questions or wish to help, Betty encourages you to give her a call, at 940-391-1919.

Cathy recommends visiting their website, www.kingoutreachcenter.com, to volunteer and learn more.

Honoring a Friend They Will Miss
Sarah Ray, Susan Miloser, Gale Hicks, Sallye Ortiz, Chef Liz, and Bob Stewart

The women of Robson Ranch Golf recently honored their friend, Charlene Hodson, with a very generous donation of funds.

By giving to Our Daily Bread, their friend Charlene continues to have a positive impact on the community.

ODB thanks the women of Robson Ranch Golf
for remembering Charlene in a special way.

Celebrating 15 Years and 600,000 Meals
It's astounding that serving hot meals to about 15 people when we first opened has developed into an organized community that feedsmore than 200 hot, nutritious lunches each week day along with connecting clients to community agencies, assisting with job searches and job interviews, offering health screenings, and more.

Denton Mayor, Chris Watts,as well as other specil donors and supporters,  will join us at lunch for this special day, June 25.

And what will we do after lunch? Clean up and prepare for the following day's lunch, just as we always do. Feeding the hungry and creating community, that's what we've done for 15 years, and that's what we will continue to do!

From Client to Volunteer to Staff

When you see Myles Wood at Our Daily Bread, the first thing you will notice is his smile-he always wears and shares his smile. One reason for his smile of late is his new job: Senior Program Coordinator.

When Myles' new position was announced to the volunteers and clients at lunch, he received a loud and long spontaneous standing ovation, clear testimony to the wide and sincere regard for him. Myles comes to this new position with gratitude, saying, "I have a deep sense of fulfillment, and this allows me to be an example.  I came to ODB as a client, having lost everything.  My housing at Connections required me to volunteer, and by volunteering and the trust placed in me, I gained self-respect."

Myles not only appreciates the responsibility of his job, but appreciates the volunteers because of their "excitement to be here and eagerness to do more-an attribute that is priceless."

Once again, ODB is a meal, but so much more;
 it is a functioning community.
Oakmont Women's Club: Impressed with ODB!
On May 12, Millie Bell, our capable and clearly charming Executive Director, gave a little talk to the Oakmont Women's Club.  Millie created such an inspiring picture of Our Daily Bread that the group presented her with a donation.
Our thanks go to this caring group.

Pictured are Connie Prendergast, on the right and Kathy Ramsay on the left, and Millie Bell happily accepting a donation.

Easy 3-Ingredient Salad
watermelon-quarter.jpg
Sometimes the simplest ingredients combine for flavor greatness, and this cool salad delivers on taste, with very little prep time.  Who knew these 3 flavors belong together?
  • cubed watermelon (a small melon for a crowd)
  • thin rings of Bermuda onion (about ½ of a small onion)
  • small pieces of fresh mint (about ½ cup)
Gently toss the ingredients to mix and keep covered and chilled until serving.
