Quite a Big Heart and a Great Big Band

The "Heart For The Hungry" crowd dined, danced, bid on art, vacations, NASCAR, jewelry and other interesting and useful items.  The music of the Denton Community Band, under the direction of Carol Lynn Mizell, kept the dance floor busy and full to the last minute.

Look at how much fun your friends had.

Plan to join us next year, February 27, 2016!

Who Fulfills the Mission?  ODB Volunteers, That's Who!

Tuesday, April 28, the ODB Board and staff honored the volunteers with a

"Hats Off  To YOU" celebration.  The scrumptious and elegant meal was of course prepared by Chef Liz and Daniel Sonney.  Area businesses and the Board provided door prizes.

We recognized .....

Joanne Gannon, Jim Jakusz, Susan Jakusz, David Johnson, CJ Solberg, Chuck Whitaker,  and Nettie Zehms have honored the clients of Our Daily Bread with 15 (FIFTEEN!) years of service. ODB fulfills its mission because of the dedication of its volunteers, and these wonderful people set a high bar of support, don't they?

While numbers don't tell the entire story of how much our volunteers mean to us, take a look at how many hours these folks gave to feed the hungry.....

  • Russell Clark-73, 620
  • Harold Anderson- 57,330
  • Lee Hollahan- 54,540
  • Jim Warsop- 45,990 (keep in mind that Jim moved to North Carolina in the early fall due to a severe illness; he logged these hours in less than a year. And we miss him, not just for the hours.)
  • Myles Wood- 30,180
  • Larry Wolf- 26,595
  • Rolf Holt- 24,720
  • Anna Solberg- 23,640
  • Jo Leenhouts- 23,340
  • Johnny Ramsey- 23,340
  • David Dansby- 21,570
  • Larry Wilson- 21,030

Larry Wolf  Is in His New Home!

We are pleased to share with you all the great news that Wolf, as he is known to his friends and community, applied to Giving HOPE for an apartment.  Giving HOPE had a grant from the federal government, part of the 100,000 homes initiative.

The property is owned by Denton Affordable Housing. Larry's apartment and utilities are free for one year. Wolf will receive budget counseling and assistance throughout the year so he can be self-sustaining once the year is up.

The deacons at St. Andrew Pres. whipped together a campaign to furnish needed household things such as furniture, utensils and linens, and some cash for things needed but not donated.

With that shiny new kitchen, do you think he might just rival our Chef Liz?

ODB volunteers are THE BEST!

Serves 6-8 cheese-wheel.jpg

2 C. chicken broth

4-6 chicken thighs

2 packages Mexican cheese, grated or crumbled

10-12 corn tortillas, torn into bites

1 serrano pepper, seeds and ribs removed, chopped

1 jalapeno pepper, chopped

1 red bell pepper, chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

Chili pepper to taste

Cumin to taste

Dash of red pepper flakes

  • Season thighs with salt, pepper, cumin, and chili powder.
  • Bake @ 350 for 45 minutes.
  • Cool then shred the meat. Save drippings.
  • Add flour to drippings to make a roux or base. Cook, stirring constantly, until smooth and slightly brown.

  • Add cheese in small amounts, stirring as needed to make smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Add chicken.
  • In a non-stick skillet, cook onions until nearly transparent, add red pepper, serrano and jalapeno pepper. Stir and cook until softened.  Add garlic and stir until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  • Grease a casserole dish. Pour enough cheese-chicken mix to coat bottom of dish.  Layer tortillas. Layer chicken. Continue layering.

You can refrigerate the dish at this point or bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until everything has melted.

Bon Appetit!

Easter Paraded Right Along

Loyal supporters, Sue and Chris Bancroft delighted the ODB children at Easter with colorful Easter Baskets full of goodies.

And, the New Horizons Adult Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church donated 200 "big people" Easter sacks stocked with protein drinks and sweet treats. Our own Carol Rogers led this effort (even with a broken arm)...go figure!

Further, Jo Leenhouts, dedicated office volunteer, colored beautiful hard boiled eggs as a special treat.

ODB appreciates you,

Carol, Jo, Sue, and Chris.

Kelley Thomas of the Honey Baked Ham Company in Lewisville prepared and donated 13 $50-hams so our Chef Liz and Daniel could serve up a delicious meal to all of our clients.

Spring Has Sprung, and Our Clients Need a Few Things

sunny-tree-boughs.jpg

Warmer days and water mean that mosquitoes are biting.  Please help our clients avoid West Nile!  Insect repellant with 15% DEET or higher will do the trick.

Two other much-needed seasonal items are sunscreen and bottled water.

How about organizing your friends and neighbors into a local drive for these items? One trip with your group's donations to ODB saves time and fuel for everyone!

Bring donations to Our Daily Bread, from 9am to 1pm, Monday-Friday, in the fellowship hall of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 300 West Oak.

Thank You!

Millie Addresses The Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry

On Tuesday, March 21, Serve Denton hosted a press release to announce the results of the Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry.

Giving the keynote speech was our own Millie Bell.  Millie clearly explained the need for addressing the issue of hunger in our community, emphasizing the importance of all agencies and the city in order to feed those who are hungry.

Her graciousness and insight are highlighted in the excerpts below:

"Our Daily Bread appreciates the collaboration made possible by Serve Denton to lead and be part of this wonderful food drive. We also appreciate Mayor Watts' dedication and focus on the need for food to help those in our community who suffer from food insecurity.

"With the 2,700 pounds of food we will receive from the drive, we can feed over 2,700 people a nutritious meal. That's nearly 14 full days of nourishment to help them get back on their feet."
