Take Care of Your Neighbor

Emilio Gonzalez will eagerly tell you about the passion and determination of Monsignor King, who was the flame that started the fire for what is now the Monsignor King Outreach Center.

When Msgr. King first opened the Narthex of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in a wretched cold blast of 2009, he was told not to do it- there would be too many problems. Emilio recounts, with a twinkle in his own eye, that Msgr. King replied, "But this is what we're supposed to be doing!"  Because of his deep, ecumenical beliefs, more than 10 different churches aligned support for those first efforts that have led to shelters larger than the Narthex.

Monsignor King Outreach Center, currently on Woodrow Lane, was much-needed shelter during the frozen cold of February, housing about 60 persons each night it was open.

The MKOC opens when temperatures fall below 32 or rise above 100. When it is open, they need dinner meals, individually-wrapped snacks, and twin-sized linens.

For more about Monsignor King Outreach Center, visit their website.

For updates, see their Facebook page.

As important as those physical items for the center, though, Emilio Gonzalez asks for prayers for a long-term building.

Hats Off to ODB Volunteers

What has 1,572 feet and 786 of the biggest, warmest hearts in Texas?

Our Daily Bread Volunteers, that's who!

Now, those numbers may not be exact, but on Tuesday, April 28, ODB will honor its volunteers with a dinner at ODB.

Look for a sign up in the kitchen and in a future email coming soon.

Time, Talent, and Care

TWU Dental Hygiene Clinic set up shop at Our Daily Bread on March 12th and 13th.  Charlene Dickinson and her about-to-graduate dental hygiene students wanted to give back to the community. Charlene chose ODB because she knew her students had the talent to make a difference, given the diverse and particular needs of ODB clients.

And, make a difference they did! Teams of dedicated students gave assessment examinations to more than 50 patients.  After the exam, students provided each patient with a certificate for a formal, and free, exam and cleaning at the TWU Dental Clinic.

ODB and its clients appreciate the time, talent, and caring Charlene and her students provided.

We will see many "smiling faces" in the near future.

Chef Liz is "Warming UP" to a New Appliance

Thanks to a Dallas Morning News Charities grant, Chef Liz is all smiles as she prepares a tray of baked chicken to feed the hungry of our community.

Frankly, the old heated holding cabinet would not maintain humidity and took too long to warm up. The new heated holding cabinet holds food at the proper serving temperature until Chef Liz is ready to feed the more than 200 meals ODB serves each day.

The new heated holding cabinet has a temperature range up to 200 degrees, a digital thermometer, and maintains 95% relative humidity at 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Those numbers may not mean much to you, but to the crew in the kitchen, those numbers add up to success.

Chef Liz' Assistant to the Chef, Daniel Sonney, and all kitchen volunteers are much happier these days.

Daniel Sonney and loyal volunteer Harold Anderson admire the new cabinet they helped place and install.

Pizza for All!

Every third Friday of the month Lewisville First United Methodist Church has been coming to our Daily Bread bearing wonderful gifts of pizza and salad.

Tim House, leader of this important mission, buys CICI's Pizza with funds donated by the church. He then brings volunteers and all the salad fixings to make the very best green salad you ever tasted.

Chef Liz, Daniel Sonney, and other gracious volunteers prepare a delicious fruit salad, drinks, and serve desserts to compliment the pizza and salad.

Our clients are very excited to receive such a nice treat and now look forward to the third Friday of each month.

Grilled Corn, Avocado and Tomato Salad

with Honey Lime Dressing

I Mixed salad with avocado, tomatoes and sweet corn NGREDIENTS:
1 pint grape tomatoes
1 ripe avocado
2 ears of fresh sweet corn
2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped

HONEY LIME DRESSING:

juice of 1 lime
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp honey
Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper, to taste
1 clove garlic, minced
dash of cayenne pepper

DIRECTIONS:
Remove husks from corn and grill over medium heat for 10 minutes. The corn should have some brown spots and be tender and not mushy. Cut the corn off the cob then scrape the cob with the back of your knife to get the juices. Set aside and let cool. Slice the tomatoes in half. Dice the avocado and chop the cilantro.

HONEY LIME DRESSING:

1. Add all the dressing ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine. Set aside.

2. Combine the sliced tomatoes, avocado, cilantro and grilled corn and honey lime dressing and mix gently so everything is evenly coated. Be careful not to mash the avocados. Let the salad sit for 10-15 minutes to let flavors mingle.

A Heart for the Hungry Dinner, Dance, and Auction

What a fun evening! Lively music, friends, dancing, bidding...and all for a good cause.

From the Welcome by Board President Bob Stewart;  to the Blessing by Jarrel Sharp;  our emcee, Joey Hawkins; our auctioneer, Bert Johnson; and the lovely address by our own Daniel Sonney, we had an evening full of fun with our community.

Speaking of our community, here's a link to an article that featured our much-loved Violet Hatcher, a remarkable artist who shared her work for the auction.
