Unexpected Visit with a Sweet Ending

Our faithful, long-time supporter, State Representative Myra Crownover recently visited Our Daily Bread. But she didn't come empty-handed: she brought a delicious, and beautiful, coconut cake for our guests.

Myra is shown here with Suely Lohr, board President, and Gretchen Arrant, long-time volunteer, who is cutting the cake to serve our clients.

The 5 Days of Christmas for our Guests

The week of December 8-12 was full of gifts, music, good will,

and of course wonderful food and care.

Kristi Bledsoe organized the week, giving each day special theme-inspired gifts and arranging for music and drawings for our guests.

Monday's theme, "Warm Head, Warm Body", supplied hats for guests to choose.

Tuesday's theme, "Cut the Chill with a Scarf", gave away lovely scarves to the also lovely guitar music of our own Myles Wood.

Wednesday's theme, "Cozy and Warm Outside", offered socks and gloves. Robert Buxton played classical piano Christmas music for everyone's listening pleasure.

Thursday was a big day!

Mike Barrow, Denton Community Theatre Managing Director, was our Santa. His lively and warm "Ho, ho, ho" sparked everyone's holiday spirit as he handed each guest a Christmas box.

 Special gifts were given to
 children under ten
.
The music of Maristella Feusstle and Thad Bonduris on guitar began the day

The Senior Center Choir, led by Betty Wright,

concluded the full schedule.

The week ended with Friday's theme, "Let It Rain, Let It Snow". Guests received ponchos and the door prizes were table-top Christmas trees.  Myles Wood again treated a full audience to his guitar playing.

We appreciate all the donations of items, music, talent, spirit and warm hearts.

The Most Touching Gift of All

Our Daily Bread is intentional about creating a community for our guests and offering safety and respect. Our staff and volunteers know to expect the unexpected, but the end of our Guests' Christmas week brought a big surprise.

Our guests surprised staff and volunteers with hand-made and decorated cookies and cards. They proudly presented the hand-signed cards and cookies, much to the surprise and great pleasure of the recipients. What a warm thanks!

The spirit of the season and the community of respect
is a lovely gift to share, indeed.

Local Effort from a Local Business

In December, Gail and Ricky Richardson conducted a toiletry drive at their restaurant, Big Fatty's Spanking Shack, to benefit our guests.

They asked their patrons to bring toothbrushes, toothpaste, body powder, cotton swabs, soap, combs, brushes, shampoo, and deodorant to their restaurant at 220 W. Parkway Drive, suite 100.

Thank you, Gail and Rick!

Visit them at their location and find out more about it here.

'Tis the Season for Giving

During our Christmas Week for our guests,
Ms. Betty Kay Seibt graced Our Daily Bread
with a generous donation from
St. Barnabas Episcopal church.

The Gift of Warmth

ODB's Millie Bell spoke at Lake Cities United Methodist Church  services on December 14.
As part of the ceremony, the United Methodist Women's group presented ODB with many blankets and hand crocheted homeless mats for our guests.

The United Methodist Women's group worked on the mats for months. Typically, they send their mats overseas, but this year they decided to donate them locally.

The mats and blankets were "blessed on the altar" during the services. We are deeply honored to receive these beautiful gifts on behalf of our guests.

Lovin' This Pizza!

Little Caesars Love Kitchen pulled up on December 22 to feed 267 meals (2 large slices of pizza per serving) to our guests. Their big-rig "kitchen on wheels" travels across the continental US and Canada, meeting the needs of the hungry, homeless, and victims of disasters. They have treated Our Daily Bread once before.

Little Caesars established the Love Kitchen in 1985. The Love Kitchen exemplifies the company's strong tradition of giving back to the communities in which it does business. They have fed nearly three million people in 48 states and four Canadian provinces. Local Little Caesars franchisees and company market operators donate food and labor for each serving.

The operator of the Love Kitchen today was Rick Moreno. He was supported by Josh Williams and Carla Nealy of the Teasley Lane store, Donna Bruce of the Gainesville store, and Gabino Hernandez of the Lewisville location.

Our grateful thanks to these local business owners
and the ethics of Little Caesar's.
