New Ways to Volunteer

When Help Was Needed, A Life Was Saved!!

On Friday, October 17, the staff, volunteers, and clients of ODB learned yet another reason to appreciate having our Volunteer Medical Assistant, Mary Ann Baker, on hand and nearby.  Mary Ann is here each week to do blood pressure checks on clients.

A new client, Ms. Nancy Flowers, had enjoyed a delicious lunch and was on her way out. After exiting the building, she began choking and fell to the ground in need of help.

Mary Ann was called to the rescue and performed the Heimlich maneuver to assist in dislodging what had choked Nancy. Nancy was still unable to catch her breath and her heart rate was high due to the anxiety associated with such an event. 911 EMTs transported Nancy to the ER and she is doing well at this point. Nancy attributes Mary Ann with saving her life.

Thank you, Mary Ann!!

Beginning to Think a Lot Like Christmas

While our weather is not quite "Christmasy", we are preparing for the season.
Our clients count on us for items like brand-new hats, scarves, rain gear, and socks

candycane-burst.jpg
Gloves or mittens can be men's or women's or unisex. One-size-fits-all works well.  A popular style of hat is the beanie/toboggan type that can either be rolled up above the ears or pulled down over the ears. Any kind of rain poncho works well.

These items will be gifts, so they need to be brand-new and unwrapped.

Thank you for thinking of others at all times of the year.

Catherine Pennell, a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, spends much of her time crocheting scarves for clients of Our Daily Bread.

She has donated hundreds of scarves to be handed out at our Client Christmas Celebration.
We send a big "Thank You" to Catherine for her generous, giving spirit and for helping keep many people warm this winter.

Weekends of Pumpkin Fun at Trinity United Methodist Church

3100 pumpkins (unloaded with the help of 12 ODB volunteers) speckled the grounds of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Two weekends of events served up fun and fundraising events

October 11 was absolutely PERFECT for the 3rd Annual Pantry Dash 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk! The rain had stopped (even for setup), the temperature was just right for running, and everyone had a great time! Runners and walkers from 7 of the 9 beneficiaries came to participate. Our Daily Bread set up a display booth to encourage volunteers and inform people Our Daily Bread's mission.

The Pantry Bash on Saturday, October 18 was accompanied by food trucks: The Waffle Wagon, The Lean Machine, The Pickled Carrot, and La Blue Casa; bounce houses; face painting; live music from Buck Creek Band and Spencer Cox; an autumn plant sale; and even a Corvette car show!

Area businesses were also drop-off locations for donations.

The community responded with abundant generosity
exceeding the goal of 50,000 pounds of food. ($1.00 = 5 pounds)

Trinity UMC hosts the events to raise awareness and money
for area food pantries and feeding programs.

Make a note to head to this fun, family event next October, 2015!

The Ranch Radio 95.9 Comes to ODB!

You know the old phrase, "Meanwhile, back at the ranch", right?

Well, The Ranch radio station at 95.9 FM (The Sound of Texas) will be broadcasting information about Our Daily Bread from November 10 through November 15. Listen in that week.
They will broadcast from the back of the church, just outside our kitchen on Saturday, November 15 from 10am-12pm. Meanwhile, ODB will prepare homeless snack packs.

Look for a tent where they will have give-aways and drawings during these 2 hours. Be prepared to be interviewed, staff and volunteers.
You will see The Ranch Radio van parked in the grassy area on the Oak Street side.
Drop by to visit or drop by and stay awhile.
You could win a prize or be on the radio and become famous!
