A HEART FOR THE HUNGRY

Many hands and hearts joined to make A Heart for the Hungry dinner, dance and auction, an astounding success.
Development Chair, Diana Warner, the Board of Directors and ODB Staff give hearty thanks to all who made this event so successful.

Our emcee, Dalton Gregory, charmed the crowd, while Adam Reese, our auctioneer, encouraged enthusiasm for all the items. President Suely Lohr managed donations for the live and silent auctions, which came from a broad range of community supporters.

Delightful decorations on the tables were the work of Dee Payne, assisted by Marty Wingo and many other volunteers.
The musical mastery of The Denton Community Band, directed by Carol Lynn Mizell, set a lively tone and tune for the evening.

ODB would like to extend a special thanks to one of its top supporters, Cigar Frog's, owned by Joe and Martha Dunham. Thanks to Cigar Frog's and other fabulous supporters in the community, ODB was able to raise a much needed $35,000 overall from the event.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DAY HONORS

VOLUNTEERS

Our Daily Bread (ODB) celebrated its wonderful volunteers for 14 years of serving the hungry by holding its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at ODB on April 8, 2014. The event was planned by Event Coordinator Kathy Jester and her very gracious committee of volunteers. Jill Jester was emcee for an evening of food, fun, and gifts.

The food was prepared by our own Chef Liz and enjoyed by all.

Suely Lohr presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers contributing the most hours for 2013. Gifts and flowers were presented to Chef Liz for her many years of dedicated work, and to Katie Klein as "Jack of All Trades" for her generously sharing her time and talent with ODB in so many capacities.

Millie Bell presented flowers to Jo Leenhouts for her major contributions in administrative support.

In addition to individual volunteer recognition, Suely recognized groups volunteering on a weekly and monthly basis from Wal-Mart's Distribution Center and from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Each volunteer received a new ODB tote bag as a token of appreciation.

Prentice Barnett provided the entertainment.
Our Daily Bread could not operate without the generous support of its valued volunteers.

STEVE PLUNKETT BIDS ST. ANDREW FAREWELL

Myra Crownover gives Steve and Margaret Plunkett a warm farewell at a reception held for the two in the Fellowship Hall on May 18, 2014.  Steve is the longest serving pastor of St. Andrew, totaling 25 years.  He witnessed the founding of Our Daily Bread and supported it faithfully during his time at St. Andrew.

Margaret has served in many volunteer capacities with ODB, the latest in the Volunteer Check-In Position. The volunteers, staff and clients of ODB will miss Margaret.

Pastor Steve and Margaret have moved to Greenwich, CT, where we are sure they will impact lives in a strong and positive way as they have with Our Daily Bread. We wish them the very best!

BITS AND PIECES

SNACK PACKS MADE EASY!

Each third Saturday of the month, 10 to 20 volunteers gather at Our Daily Bread to prepare 500 weekend meals for ODB's clients. A variety of food is put into a one-gallon zip-lock  bag, then two zip-lock bags are put into a Wal-Mart bag (donated by Jamie Hamilton of the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Sanger, Texas).  This ensures that each homeless person will have one meal for Saturday and one for Sunday. Also included in each bag are two bottles of water and two pieces of fresh fruit to make two nutritious meals.
Recently, ODB volunteer Nolan Bell recognized a packaging problem with the snack packs; separating the bags in order to fill them was difficult and inefficient.  He solved the problem by creating two devices similar to those used in grocery stores to hold the bags as they are being filled.
Thank you, Nolan, for smoothing out the snags in the process!

FOOD DONATION BOX

Thanks to the coordination efforts of Jim Jakusz, a member of the Facilities Committee, ODB is proudly sporting a new, beautifully crafted Food Donation box.  Jim contacted Jeff Gilbert, manager of the Denton Senior Center, and inquired if their Wood Shop participants would be interested in building a food collection box for ODB.  They agreed to build it, Jim bought the material, and the work began. ODB greatly appreciates the efforts of Terry Parsons and Bob Ragborg for constructing the much needed box, and Jim Jacusz for making this happen.
After the box was built, Ed Ingram, Facilities Committee Chair, bought paint and brushes for Russell Clark and Harold Anderson, ODB volunteers, who painted the box, as well as three other similar collection boxes for St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
Indeed, we are grateful for the many hands and hearts in this project!
