GREASE TRAP FAILS and
COMMUNITY COMES TO THE RESCUE With constant use, the 250 gallon grease trap that was installed for the kitchen twelve years ago had deteriorated and the pipes began to collapse. The only answer was a new 1,000 gallon grease trap to solve the immediate problem and to handle the increased capacity. To remove the old trap and install a new one in place of the old one, Our Daily Bread would be faced not only with a sky-high trade's bill, but they would be unable to prepare its familiar noon meal, as the water would need to be cut off for 2 to 3 days. As Ed Ingram, Our Daily Bread board member and Facilities Chairperson started getting bids to replace the grease trap. BCI Mechanical of Denton, owned and operated by Greg Coward agreed to install a new trap as a donation to ODB. Greg negotiated with other business leaders in Denton to get the sub-contract work done. Tim Beaty Builders and Moore Supply, all of Denton stepped up to provide equipment, labor, and expertise, all at no cost, to help the soup kitchen out of a tight spot. In addition, the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Sanger, Jamie Hamilton-Supervisor, provided paper plates, napkins, and paper cups so the kitchen could serve meals without washing dishes. And, for two days, Little Caesars Pizza provided 50 pizzas each day to help feed the hungry of Denton. ODB is grateful for the outpouring of love and concern by these community leaders in such a time of need. |

Minute with Millie
2012 was a busy year for Our Daily Bread. We served 45,887 meals, an average of 179 meals per day. We have over 1,200 clients registered with us, and are serving over 1,000, of which 549 are self-identified as homeless and 68 are children. In addition to a hot lunch, we also serve a continental breakfast when we open our doors. In the food area, we expanded services to our clients by opening a "free" Farmers Market area where clients can get fresh produce and other food items to aid them in having healthy meals outside of Our Daily Bread. Target has joined us in our mission to feed the hungry through Feeding America and Tarrant Area Food Bank. We receive donations of food and non-food products three times per week. This is a most welcome addition. We have also added two new portable buildings for dry food and supply storage. We expanded our Social and Special Services areas to include shower passes and laundry vouchers, much needed services for our homeless and other clients. 2012 also brought Dr. Masciarelli to our dining room. Dr. Masciarelli and a registered nurse provide medical services to our client base. Our clients are most grateful for this service. He has seen nearly 300 patients since his arrival. We are so appreciative to have Dr. Masciarelli with us. In addition, we now have eight other agencies with a presence in our dining room, including: a blood pressure nurse, Catholic Charities, Interfaith, VA Services through Catholic Charities, SNAP, Solutions, Goodwill Industries Employment Services, and Safe Link phone services. These services are much needed by our clients. Having these agencies here provides convenience and hope for our clients, particularly those without transportation. The generosity of our community and our wonderful volunteers cannot be over-emphasized, as we could not help those in need each day without this support. |
