A daily guided yoga practice in support of the Marillac Mission Fund

JUNE 30 - JULY 5 (Monday to Saturday)
6:45 am - 8:00 am

(no punchcards)

Sign-up sheet on bulletin board in Main House. Payment confirms registration.
Proceeds will go towards the Marillac Mission Fund in Lima, Peru.
See info below.

In July, my daughter, Jennifer, will be travelling to Peru to spend 6 weeks volunteering with the Marillac Mission Fund at two hospitals: a psychiatric rehabilitation hospital in Lima, and a remote and isolated hospital in the Amazon that treats people infected with HIV/AIDS and TB. The Marillac Mission Fund was established in 1967 and has spent the last 5 decades dedicating their lives to helping the poor and underprivileged of Lima. They run hospitals, sponsor girls and women to go to school, and operate mental health rehabilitation hospitals that are desperately needed in the most desolate and poverty stricken areas of Peru. Proceeds from the Summer Sadhana will be donated to the Marillac Mission Fund and will be used to purchase much needed medical supplies for these two hospitals and to help offset travel expenses to the Amazon hospital as it can only be accessed through bush plane and boat.

I hope you will consider signing up for the summer sadhana and offering up your practice to help support this worthwhile cause!

Jawahar Bangera Yoga Workshop Review
by Jenn Krake

Jenn in Utthita Parsvakonasana supported

I recently had the privilege of attending the workshop with Jawahar Bangera and felt particularly fortunate as I was 20 weeks pregnant and required modifications and assistance.

His passion for yoga was truly apparent. He was very good at keeping our large group organized and used an authoritative manner to get and keep our attention and focus but also used humour, which would lighten things up, and included the philosophy of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Such as the control of the thought waves (vrittis) in the mind - the five thought waves being right knowledge, wrong knowledge, verbal delusion, sleep, and memory. And prakriti, or nature, and how it relates to our senses: earth-smell, air- touch, water- taste, fire- sight, ether- hear. He explained the difference with Iyengar yoga in that we start with learning the asanas and bringing awareness to our bodies so we can mature and develop subconscious intelligence (buddhi). So he says 'abhyasa' (practise, effort, repetition) - the first means by Patanjali to restrain the fluctuations of conciousness. It is the activity of the gunas (sattvas, rajas, tamas), or qualities of nature that create these fluctuations. He also spoke of the five kleshas (afflictions that impede progress on the spiritual path), ego , ignorance, aversion, attatchment, and fear of death. The latter klesha he used as an example to our fear in an asana of being unstable.

The Median Line

by Doug Bauer

The median line is God. -BKS Iyengar

Recently I spent a week in silent retreat in a natural setting, focused internally outside the daily busy ness.

This enabled me to enter into the raw beauty of just this, and  many other moments. Whisking away the complex patterns of delicate spider webs of thought that often capture my attention away.

In a state of rapture I watched a large hawk of some six foot wing span hunting high above the fields of Rasa Creek. Grace held her in a natural flow of the mountain winds. Watching closely, I noticed how she would make a slight adjustment if she veered out of alignment, off course of this divine force.

With the flick of a wingtip, or the tip of her tail she was able to move back to the center line and become one with the sacred breath of providence.

I have now been bringing this gift of understanding  into my asana practice, each slight adjustment caressing my attention to feel the same divine force flowing through me as I return to the center line.

Disciplined action, study of the self, and surrender to the Lord constitute the practice of Yoga.

"Tapas svadhyiya Tsvarapranidhanani kriyayogah." Yoga Sutra II. 1

With wonder and amazement I see the modern day interpretation of yoga. It seems to reflect jumping around into various contortions in spray on sensual,

eye popping garb, flavoured with a wholesome disposition and perhaps a dash of mysticism (certainly there are indeed worse aspirations).

I truly see yoga as a concept more like our daily lives. It's overwhelming just thinking of all the intricate parts that we have learned to engage in, that actually comprise our life experience.

The asanas I feel are only one aspect of yoga, likening to the preparation of food we engage in daily in our everyday lives, like yoga, some recipes being better than others.

The asanas tap into the integral form of yoga giving it sustenance not unlike the nourishment we obtain from the food we have prepared, giving life to our bodies.

Now most certainly it is most prudent to assure where our food comes from, avoiding the over processed, chemical additive laden, factory farmed or produced products.

In the same way it is recommended to identify the purity and the origin of the teachings we are receiving in asana practice even if it is the only limb of yoga we wish to hang upon.

10008 Blessings

Doug

FAQ:

Are certain poses taught for each level?

The answer is yes. BKS Iyengar has devised a most brilliant set of syllabi. There are actually 13 levels of syllabi: Introductory I and II, Junior Intermediate I, II, and III, Senior Intermediate I, II and III, Junior Advanced  I, II and III and Senior Advanced I and II. At the time of this article, only up to Intermediate Senior II is assessed in Canada. The higher levels of certification are awarded by BKS Iyengar himself. Teachers are certified at each of these levels which qualify them to teach from these syllabi. Introductory I is a provisional teaching certificate and once the teacher gets their Introductory II they become fully certified. That means they have been tested on their understanding of the asanas and therefore can teach everything from the Introductory I and II syllabi. As the teacher gains higher levels, they can teach the more advanced asanas.  click link below to finish reading this article
