A friendly reminder to our students that there will be no classes on Friday, March 21 & Saturday, March 22nd due to an IYAC (Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada) Teacher  Assessment that the yoga house is hosting where candidates from across Canada will be coming to a Junior Intermediate I Examination of their practice and teaching. If the pass, they will be certified at that level. Good luck to all the Candidates and thank you to all the volunteers who will be helping out throughout the weekend.

We want to thank all of our students, new and longtime, for coming to our studio. It is our honour to share the gift of Iyengar Yoga with you. A big thanks to our countless volunteers who continue to work so hard to run Kelowna Yoga House (non-profit) society.

Namaste, and we hope to see you very soon at the Kelowna Yoga House!

Another Yoga Hero (by Melissa Perehudoff)

Colleen
Colleen in Upavistha Konasana

Colleen has been practicing yoga at the Kelowna Yoga House for 9 years. She started yoga because she was tired of blowing her back out in curling and having to visit Chiropractors or Physiotherapists for repair. After her first yoga class she thought, "I love this and I'm going to keep doing this forever".

The health benefits of yoga for Colleen include reducing high blood pressure, keeping her agile and increasing length in the spine despite advanced osteoarthritis in her back and hands. One of Colleen's favourite poses is Supta Virasana as in this restorative pose she learned to breathe into any pain until it relaxed. Yoga taught her to accept that pain is a part of her life and to listen to her body for what kind of a practice to do that day.

For the past two years, she has been taking two classes per week at Kelowna Yoga House and maintaining two home practices per week, including Sirsasana (Headstand) in the chairs. She and her Cardiologist agree that the high blood pressure yoga practices she does are very helpful for her heart.
Colleen happily reports that for the past six months she has increased her home practice to a 40 to 50 minute practice every day
'after four sips of coffee'. She likes doing her home practice first thing in the morning to get her joints moving. For those wanting to start a home practice Colleen says, "Just do it. It's addictive and so beneficial". Yoga is a natural complement to Colleen's balanced lifestyle of snowshoeing with her husband Arnie, walks on the beach in Kelowna and Maui, table games, knitting and healthy cooking.

Colleen's blue eyes sparkle as she tells about the doctor at the Pain Clinic she attends for arthritis. He called her a "very deceptive lady" since after reading her file and watching her back on ultrasound he expected her to enter the clinic all hunched over. Instead he exclaimed, "You must do yoga. There is no way you should have this flexibility in your back. Keep doing it always". And Colleen hopes to do that.

Feature Asana
Ardha Chandrasana
Half Moon Pose

The name comes from the Sanskrit words Ardha meaning "half", Candra or Chandra (चन्द्र) meaning "moon" or "luminous, as in the light from the moon", and Asana (आसन, Āsana) meaning "posture" or "seat"

This posture strengthens and helps us develop poise and balance.

After you shift your weight to your right hand and right leg, lift your left leg and stretch your standing leg simultaneously. Try the pose with your back against the wall to solidify the alignment, extension, and opening of your chest.

Recipe
Thai Veggie Wraps
makes 4 delicious wraps

Ingredients:
Almond Sauce:
1 tbsp almond butter
2 tsp grated fresh ginger
1/2 fresh lemon, juiced
1 clove garlic
1 tsp tamari
1/3 cup water
1/2 an avocado

The Wraps:
4 collard greens or kale leaves
1/2 cup purple cabbage sliced thinly
1 carrot, thinly sliced
2 green onions, thinly sliced
6 snow peas or green beans, thinly sliced
1 cucumber, seeded and thinly sliced

Method:
Almond Sauce: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

The Wraps: Excluding the collard greens, which are your wrap, combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix. Take a small handful of the mixture of sliced vegetables, about the width of a Loonie and place inside one collard green and roll it up like a wrap. Insert a toothpick to make it hold, if needed. Pour the almond sauce over the rolls and serve as an appetizer or side dish or main.

Option: Add a spoonful of hemp seeds for protein and good fat.
