Kelowna Yoga House Newsletter
November  2013
kyhlogo-new
 Greetings!

Greetings from Kelowna Yoga House. With Christmas break around the corner we would like to remind our Sessional Members, that once your card has expired, you can renew for a new session immediately and the two-week Christmas break will be added onto your next session. In other words, the two-week period that we are closed will not count
as part of the 12 weeks or 3 months in your next session.
The last class before the break is December 21st and we start our regular schedule again on Jan 6th. You may want to jumpstart your practice in the New Year with Melissa's Restorative Workshop on Sunday, Jan 5th (details below in Upcoming Events)

We are excited to announce that our Annual General Meeting is right around the corner, so mark your calendars on Dec 7th. We welcome all Members to attend this fun and informative evening. Curious to know what happens "behind the scenes" at KYH? The AGM will fill you in on all the work our volunteer committees do to keep everything running as smoothly as possible at the Yoga House. Interested in an opportunity to become part of the action? We are always looking for enthusiastic helpers either to join a committee or to become a Board Member. Talk to your teacher for more information.  Here is a list of our committees to give you an idea of where the opportunites await:

Yoga Hero - An Interview with Kathy Appel
by Melissa Perehudoff
Kathy  Appel  is  a  world  traveller,  shiatsu  practitioner, grandmother and affirmed yogini.  She  has  also   been  blind  since  her  mid--twenties  and  diabetic  since  she  was  nine.  Kathy  started  yoga  26  years  ago  at   the  Healing  Arts  Center  in  Santa  Monica  California  as  an  elective  course  in  the  two  year  shiatsu  training   program.  She  currently  takes  two  classes  per week at Kelowna  Yoga  House  and  fits  in  a  daily  practice  at   home  whenever  she  can.    Her  partner  Steve  will  sometimes  find  her  doing  Ardha  Chandrasana  in  the   kitchen  while  she  is  waiting  for  something  to  cook.  Or  she  may  do  a  more  formal  practice  after  work  to   keep  her  body  stretched,  open  and  moving  since  her  work  is  very  physical.    She  loves  doing  yoga   because  it  feels  good  and  only  requires  inner  vision.    She  has  three  children  and  enjoys  playing  yoga  with   her  three  grandchildren.    Her  guide  dog,  Pam  relaxes  during  yoga  class  but  practices  Downward  Facing  Dog  at  home  daily.
Kathy and her guide dog Pam in the Moon Studio

Kathy  works  hard  at  being  healthy  which  includes  yoga,  Chinese  medicine,  regular  exercise  and  a  basic   healthy  diet.    Yoga  provides  her  with  greater  physical  and  mental  balance,  learning  to  be  in  her  body  and   reduces  injuries  such  as  stepping  off  a  curb  unintentionally  and  twisting  an  ankle.    Kathy  knows  that   staying  strong  and  flexible  in  your  body  branches  off  into  the  rest  of  your  life.  She  has  travelled   extensively  throughout  her  lifetime  to  countries  such  as  New  Zealand,  Fiji,  Australia,  South  Africa,  Japan   and  Korea.    She  hopes  to  return  to  Varanasi,  India  one  day  to  absorb  the  sounds,  smells,  spices,  people   and  temple  incense  of  this  sacred  city.
Teacher Training Reflections
by Terry Tustain

L-R: Jenn, Terry, Laurie, Diane (Horsefly, BC), Phofi, Tricia
As  many  of  you  may  have  noted,  we  have  a  very  vibrant  teacher  training  group  at  KYH!  You  may  have   experienced  some  extra  hands  in  class  as  the  teacher  trainees  assist  you  with  your  asanas  or  teach  a  few   poses  under  supervision.    I  am  delighted  to  work  with  these  ladies  as  their  commitment  to  Iyengar  Yoga   is  huge  and  they  are  so  keen  to  learn.    I  love  the  energy  that  they  bring  to  their  studies----their  curious   minds  and  warm  hearts.  As  part  of  the  teacher  training  process  there  are  written  assignments  as  well  as   the  practical  elements.    One  of  these  papers  is  to  write  a  self--  assessment  at  the  end  of  the  year  of   training.    Below  is  an  excerpt  from  Terry  Tustain's  paper.    I  think  it  will  give  you  an  intimate  view  of  the   process,  including  some  serious  self--study.    KZ

Terry:   I  thought  I'd  consider  how  things  have  changed  for  me  since  I  began  Teacher  Training  in  September   2011.  What  is  different,  and  what  has  remained  the  same?  I  am  much  more  attentive  to  what  my   teachers  say  and  do,  not  only  to  me  but  to  the  other  students.  I  used  to  listen  to  my  teachers  simply  to   improve  as  a  student.  Now,  with  each  class,  I'm  also  trying  to  learn  how  to  become  a  better  teacher.  As   a  result,  I  am  much  more  aware  of  how  classes  are  taught  and  organized.  I  try  hard  to  retain  at  least   some  of  the  words  and  techniques  of  my  teachers.  I  try  to  understand  why,  when  helping  specific   students,  they  make  the  decisions  they  do.  My  fear  is  that  I  will  never  be  able  to  reproduce  half  of  what   they  are  demonstrating  or  talking  about.  On  a  good  day  this  doesn't  worry  me.     My  attitude  to  teaching  has  changed.  At  the  beginning  of  the  program,  I  knew  that  I  wanted  to  teach,   but  was  quite  nervous  about  doing  it.  There  is  still  a  certain  amount  of  dread  when  I  have  to  teach  in   front  of  my  supervising  teacher,  but  that  is  not  as  intense  as  it  used  to  be.  What  has  really  been  a   revelation  to  me  has  been  the  discovery  that  teaching  can  be  fun  (even  when  being  supervised),   thoroughly  absorbing,  and  even  more  rewarding  than  I  thought  it  might  be.  The  nerves  are  going  away.  I   am  happy  doing  it.  My  confidence  is  building.

What  has  stayed  the  same:  my  interest  in  learning  about  yoga.  Sometimes  it  seems  that  there  is  so   much  to  learn  that  I  can  never  begin  to  pick  up  more  than  a  small  bit  of  what  comes  my  way;  on  other   days,  I  feel  happy  that  there  is  so  much  to  learn,  because  I  will  never  lack  for  more  to  dig  into.   Still  the  same:  my  regard  for  my  teachers.  I  can't  think  why  we  have  deserved  such  good  ones,  but  they   are  here  (well,  one  took  off  to  the  east  coast)  and  from  the  time  I  began  doing  classes  with  them,  I  have   continued  to  enjoy  their  instruction,  while  watching  them  mature  as  teachers.  And  same  again:  the   feeling  I  have  when  I  come  to  my  mat  for  my  practice.  I  feel  that  I  come  down  to  earth,  literally,  when  I   bring  my  hands  to  my  mat.  It  is  the  base  for  my  practice  of  asana,  and  it  is  also  a  place  for  grounding  my   mind.  There  are  many  days  when  I'm  quite  grateful  that  I  have  this  mat--sized  chunk  of  space.  Whatever   else  is  crazy  or  out  of  sorts  in  my  life,  the  mat  never  changes.  The  work  I  do  there  is  always  waiting  and   rewarding.  I  like  doing  the  work.  The  work  is  my  practice.  TM

Recipe
Pumpkin Granola
Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 40 min
Serves 4-6

Ingredients:
1/2 c sliced almonds
1/2 c pumpkin seeds
1/2 c chopped pecans
8-10 dried dates, pits removed, then chopped
1/2 c pumpkin puree
1/2 c coconut oil, melted
1/2 c unsweetened shredded coconut
1/2 c maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground ginger
pinch of salt

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 325 F
In a large mixing bowl, add your pumpkin puree, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and all spices. Mix well.
Then add your nuts, seeds, and dates and mix well with your wet ingredients.
Place parchment paper on a large baking sheet and pour your granola mixture on top. Use a spoon to spread out the mixture evenly so everything will cook at the same time.
Place in oven and cook for 30-40 min, moving granoa around half way through to be sure it doesn't burn.
LET COOL. Letting the granola cool will help it harden up.
Eat all by itself or top it off with coconut or almond milk.
Enjoy!
