FREE Class Week: Sept 12-17th
Our Gift to YOU
This September we are having a full week of free classes, rather than our usual Taste of Yoga. See our fall schedule for class times. During this week we welcome new students and of course, returning students who have made KYH a vibrant community. If you have not tried Yoga House before, this is a great opportunity to meet the teachers and experience the brilliance of this style of Yoga. Teachers will also be accepting registration for the fall session at that time.

In the Beginning...a Short History of Kelowna Yoga House
by Deborah Lomond
Twenty five years ago, there was no Iyengar Yoga in Kelowna. It all began when Margaret Lunam moved from the Comox Valley to Kelowna. At that time, Margaret was already in her early sixties and ready to begin a new life teaching Iyengar Yoga in the Okanagan Valley.
Her first yoga classes were held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Parkinson Recreation Center and the Small Boats Association. She eventually bought a house on Clifton Road and converted the basement into a yoga studio with ropes and all. Many of the teachers at KYH today started their yoga journey in that beautiful, warm space overlooking Okanagan Lake.
Margaret was a woman with vision and a strong belief in the power of Iyengar Yoga to heal the body and mind. She had been trained as a physiotherapist and immediately connected with the individualized capacity of the Iyengar practice.
Margaret also worked tirelessly as a volunteer to build community and protect the environment.
Margaret conducted classes in her home studio for many years till the creation and opening of Kelowna Yoga House in 2001. There was an interim period during the building of KYH when classes were held in the Buddhist Temple on Lawrence Ave.
Margaret generously donated the funds to purchase 1272 St. Paul Street and build Kelowna Yoga House. Much of the work was done by volunteers from the community that Margaret had created.
Kelowna Yoga House is a non-profit, charitable society and continues to be run by volunteers who share a belief in building community.

Yoga for Kids
by Melissa Perehudoff
Yoga at any age connects us with our innate sense of joy, helps us deal with stress, develop positive body awareness and learn relaxation and concentration skills. So why not plant these seeds for life long healthy habits and body-mind awareness in our children? Medical statistics suggest that childhood obesity and diabetes are increasing. Our children today are subject to more stresses of daily and family life. In addition, children lead a more sedentary lifestyle with the explosion of technology and playing of video and computer games for recreational activity. Shorter attention spans may be a result of our media driven world.
The physical benefits of yoga, including increased strength, stamina, flexibility, coordination, improved posture and body awareness are self evident. Yoga has also been scientifically proven to decrease anxiety and depression. It helps to focus and calm the mind and nurtures the development of healthy self esteem and confidence. Yoga at an early age, in a non-competitive learning environment encourages development of all these life skills to help children grow into happier, healthier and more balanced adults. read more

Gratitude
by Krisna Zawaduk
Swami Sivananda once said, "Let it be known that gratitude is one of the strongest powers and the finest emotion that a human being is capable of." Gratitude is an emotion that can be cultivated. We can start by being grateful for the simple things in life. Number one: be grateful for awaking each morning! Most of us have our health, we have some measure of intelligence, have a roof over our heads and food to eat. We can start with those affirmations. The more we acknowledge what we already have, gratitude feeds itself. It's like you open the door of your heart and the blessings pour on in! Being thankful becomes almost a reflex thought; it arises on its own, naturally. Take a moment to express to others your gratitude for their help, their way of being, for their support and encouragement. You will make their day with a few simple words of praise, recognition or appreciation. Swami Radha said that when we complain a lot, we kill our sense of gratitude. Besides that, complaining is not very inspirational! When you articulate the meaning and value of even small things and events, this makes others more conscious of their own good fortune. read more

A Beginner's Perspective on Iyengar Yoga I began taking yoga classes at the Kelowna Yoga House regularly in December 2010. When I first started yoga, the only thing I had going for me was my age. As a full-tme university student, I was very inflexible, always stiff, and I had terrible posture. After I started Iyengar yoga, going only once per week at this point, I began to notice that my tight hamstrings were loosening up, and I could actually touch my toes for the first time in years. The scoliosis I had developed from prolonged periods of studying began to straighten out. My overall flexibility and strength dramatically improved after only one session. Read More... |
