Director's Message

Dear Friends of DSABC,

Happy New Year!  I hope that you are having great start to 2015. For DSABC, January is an exciting time as the mentoring program celebrates "25 Years of Mentoring Making A Difference." DSABC is eager to share past mentor stories, pictures, and history throughout the year in this quarterly newsletter (see below) and on our social media sites."Like" DSABC on Facebook to check out our version of "Throwback Thursdays".... maybe you'll see familiar faces of mentors and students of years gone by!!  If you have a mentor/mentee story to share (where are they now) please contact DSABC to have it included. We'd love to hear from past mentees and mentors alike!

This January will also mark the 14th annual National Mentoring Month and Danbury Schools and Business Collaborative (DSABC) is participating in this campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring opportunities to connect more of Danbury's students with positive adult role models. There are currently 230 students in the program that draws mentors from  area businesses in the collaboration as well as the community at large.

While our program has produced countless stories of success over the past 25 years, we are continually seeking new volunteers as well as business partnerships in the greater Danbury area. National Mentoring Month is an ideal opportunity to let business leaders know that they can help strengthen our community through mentoring.

As a supporter of the DSABC mentor program, you are invited to show your continued commitment to mentoring this month by posting one of these badges on your email signature and/or social media page(s).

DSABC Selected for NATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT

DSABC has been selected by the Governors Prevention Partnership to participate in a national research project, Quality Mentoring System Field Test, sponsored by MENTOR.
The DSABC school based mentoring program will be objectively evaluated using The Six Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring.™
1. Recruitment
2. Screening
3. Training
4. Matching
5. Monitoring and Support
6. Closure

DSABC will begin the process this winter, or next year; the timeframe is randomly selected by the researcher. One component of this study will engage mentor feedback and DSABC mentors will be randomly selected to complete a brief survey.  Detailed results of this survey will be provided upon completion of the study.  Stay tuned for updates!

SAVE THE DATE
March 5th is Giving Day
Powered by Fairfield County Community Foundation

Initiated last year by Fairfield County's Community Foundation, Giving Day encourages individuals, families, companies, clubs and groups to "give where you live" and support Fairfield County nonprofits.

On last year's Giving Day, 9,211 online donors gave more than $620,000 to 267 Fairfield County nonprofits - all in just 24 hours! An additional $127,500 in cash prizes funded by the Community Foundation, lead sponsor Bank of America and other corporate and community sponsors were awarded to more than 50 nonprofits.

All combined, the 2014 Fairfield County Giving Day raised $750,000. The goal for the 2015 Giving Day is to raise $1 million.

Thanks to DSABC's supporters, mentors, and donors, DSABC raised $6,000 from 98 donors and won a $1,000 cash prize! DSABC's goal for the 2015 Giving Day is to raise $10,000, which will provide 5 students with scholarship gifts.  Mark your calendar for March 5th to help us reach our goal. (Details on how to give will be coming soon.)
