ARTS ABOUND
It is apparent every year at Pathways that the arts are powerful channels for learning and expression. Through the Alternative Therapies Program our students are mentored and taught by an amazing array of resident artists who partner with our teachers and therapists to create experiences that open minds, foster creativity, and encourage self-awareness. This results in students who have learned something about their world and themselves. It also yields a bounty of artwork and performance that enriches the whole Pathways community.

This year muralist David Cunningham worked with students at Pathways-Crossland Re-Entry to make a sculpture celebrating achievement in honor of the school's 10th anniversary; rap and hip hop artist Jamaal Collier brought a vibrant alternative culture and a bold new way of expression to Northwood and Edgewood. Carien Quiroga helped students and staff create another stunning and self-revelatory mosaic at DuVal Re-entry.   She will be visiting Pathways-Anne Arundel later this spring. Katherine Dilworth will introduce the world of felting to students at Springville as they create a quilt of self-portraits to depict the beauty each person brings to their community.

With the benefit of the arts so much in evidence at Pathways, it is no wonder that our annual student art show has become an amazing showcase of emerging talent and self-expression. It is a beautiful way to honor all those, including artists, mentors, social workers, teachers, agency representatives, friends and family, who give their time, energy, and commitment each year so that our students can learn and become self-confident artists of their own lives. It is not to be missed!

Learning from a horse
Like the arts, therapeutic horseback riding has been an invaluable part of the Pathways experience almost from the beginning. Students from almost every site go to Rock Creek Horse Center where they spend time with horses, learning to care for and ride them. In the course of the weekly sessions it becomes clear: horses provide profound lessons that a computer or textbook cannot. The students learn about courage, about caring for a living being, about working with another to move forward together gracefully, about the pride of turning a corner and reaching a goal. The dedicated and gifted human volunteers at the center ably assist the horses in these life lessons.
Finally comes the grand day when together with their equine teachers the students proudly demonstrate all they have learned, earning a blue ribbon and a joyful sense of accomplishment.

The amazing artists who carry out days- or weeks-long residencies at Pathways come to us through the Arts in Education Program of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). The Council maintains a long roster of talented Maryland artists who are trained to integrate lessons in art and academics. It provides grant funding to support the cost of bringing these artists to schools across the state.

Pathways is further assisted in bringing artists to our schools by the dedicated staff of Young Audiences of Maryland, the founding affiliate of the nation's largest arts education network.

We are grateful to the Prince George's County Council for providing special appropriations grants to support arts projects at Pathways-DuVal Re-Entry and Crossland Re-Entry.

MSDE Review:

The Pathways Schools is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as a nonpublic special education facility. MSDE makes regular onsite visits to our schools to certify that each complies with state regulations. Pathways-Anne Arundel was pleased after its MSDE review in March to be found in perfect compliance with all required regulations. We look forward to the MSDE visit to Pathways-Edgewood later this month.
