MANSEF ADVOCACY DAY
Last month, students, staff, parents and families from Pathways joined with other representatives from other nonpublic special education facilities in Maryland to encourage lawmakers to enhance education funding for children and youth with special needs. They delivered a strong, personal, and eloquent message about the critical importance of schools like ours for the success of all Maryland students.

A Pathways student, joined by Pathways principal Cindy Sumner and representatives from two other nonpublic schools, visited Maryland State Senator Ed Reilly ( center) on behalf of special education in our state. The visit was part of the advocacy day organized by MANSEF
(Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities). "Big Ed" Reilly understands the benefit of nonpublic schools and was impressed to hear our student share his story.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Seniors from Pathways-DuVal toured Howard Community College. Based on their interests in internet technology, nursing, and emergency medical technician training, the students visited the college's computer lab and nursing department. They checked out the practice "patient" and viewed the ambulance used for EMT training.

HEARD IN ANNAPOLIS ON ADVOCACY DAY
A Pathways student voice:
I wasn't ... used to much social interaction. Pathways changed all of that. They helped me ease back into society...for the first time, I was in a school that was able to make me feel welcome. It was the first school that got to really know me...Now I'm a completely different person. If it weren't for them I would have dropped out of school.
Echoed by another:
[Pathways} was able to make someone who just stayed in their room and never went outside become someone who goes to libraries, movies...and most importantly school...This school showed me that it does get better with the support of teachers, counselors, and students...This school to me is my happiness, knowledge, and most importantly, my hope.
